In Derby 49, the West Coast Eagles will host rivals the Fremantle Dockers, an intriguing battle after the positive start the sides have had to season 2019. Join The Roar for all of the action with live scores and a blog of the match from 8:10pm AEST.

After a mishap at the Gabba in Round 1, West Coast have returned to their winning ways against the Giants at home and Collingwood at the MCG.

In the grand final rematch last Saturday evening, West Coast proved too good for the Pies once again, overcoming a first-half deficit to set up a 22-point victory.

Jamie Cripps hit the board with four goals and Josh Kennedy put through three, in a game that had moments – a flying Ryan mark, a Dom Sheed goal – all too similar to the 2018 grand final.

Fremantle also had a win last round, defeating St Kilda by five points at Optus Stadium.

It wasn’t a pretty game to watch and it featured hefty momentum swings, but the Dockers held on late for victory on Sunday afternoon, even without their skipper who suffered a shocking concussion in the third term.

The Saints kept peppering, though their inaccuracy in front of goals allowed Fremantle to breathe and ultimately take the four points.

In team news, Liam Duggan has recovered from a knee complaint sustained a fortnight ago and will return to his defensive role in the AFL team. Josh Rotham, who debuted last Saturday against the Pies, is the unlucky omission.

Fremantle have been forced to make one change with captain Nat Fyfe to miss Round 4 following a nasty head knock and concussion against the Saints.

Bailey Banfield has also been omitted for the team.

Small forwards Sam Switkowski and Lachie Schultz come into the Dockers’ side; it’s Switkowski’s first game of AFL in 2019, while Schultz gets his place back after he was dropped for last weekend’s match.

The last time these two met was in round 20, 2018, where the Eagles were 58-point winners on their run to a Premiership.

It was the Eagles’ seventh consecutive Derby win, but Derby 48 will be remembered for the Andrew Gaff strike that broke Andrew Brayshaw’s jaw and saw Gaff miss out on the premiership.

Ed Langdon plays his 50th AFL game for the Dockers on Saturday night. Taken at pick 54 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, Langdon developed into a running midfielder in 2018 and plays an important ball moving role for Fremantle.

Prediction
Fremantle might be showing positive signs, but when they come up against the classy, team-to-beat West Coast, the game suddenly might get a bit more challenging.
