Show Preview

Round 21 concludes with a return to Monday night football, as the Melbourne Demons look to keep their top-two hopes alive against a badly flagging West Coast Eagles. Tune into this clash from Optus Stadium here on The Roar with live scores from 8:10pm (AEST).

They might sit seventh, but the Eagles’ hopes of even being competitive in September should they make it are all but gone. Adam Simpson’s side has been deplorable for much of the second half of the year, Round 20’s 45-point loss to lowly Collingwood one of their worst yet.

It has been a stunning fall from grace for the Eagles, and, staring at a Western derby and a road trip to take on Brisbane in their final fortnight, are far from home and hosed yet. They’ll probably need to win one of those to play finals, and the way they’re going, none will be easy.

The Demons got back on track with a 98-point win over Gold Coast, but beating up on a side which didn’t show up isn’t exactly going to silence the doubters. Recent defeats to another flag contender in the Western Bulldogs, plus to likely non-finalists in GWS and Collingwood, leaves the one-time ladder-leaders in third.

However, the Dees could still retake top spot with a win tonight, courtesy of the Bulldogs and Cats losing this week.

As is his wont, Adam Simpson has reacted to last week’s horror show by venting on some junior players, dropping four for this evening. Former Lion Alex Witherden earns a recall. Meanwhile, Jake Melksham comes in for the Dees for the suspended Jack Viney.
