Show Preview

Round 9 concludes with Melbourne returning to the scene of their 2021 premiership against the struggling West Coast. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 5:20pm (AEST).

The last time the Demons came to Perth, they left with the premiership cup after a 74-point thrashing of the Western Bulldogs in last year’s grand final.

That’s not on the table this time, but sitting pretty at 8-0, the Dees are unbackable favourites to win their first nine games for the second year in a row.

Unchanged from the side that dismantled St Kilda last week, it would be a surprise if the Eagles so much as gave the all-conquering Demons a good fight.

In contrast, the Eagles this week become the first team in VFL/AFL history to have no players feature in every game across the first nine rounds, providing Patrick Naish remains out of the team. Hurn and Naish were the last to have failed to miss at Adam Simpson’s team deals with COVID and injury woes and plenty of criticism of their standards.

COVID-hit trio Jackson Nelson, Greg Clark and Alex Witherden return, while Andrew Gaff joins Hurn and Naish in missing with yet another injury. It’s far from ideal for the Eagles to be taking on Melbourne in their current plight; only time will tell whether they can at least leave with some dignity intact, like they did last week against Brisbane.
