Round 7 of the AFL premiership season begins in Perth tonight, with the West Coast Eagles playing host to the Richmond Tigers at Optus Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores, coverage and analysis from 7:25pm (AEST).

Last time these two sides met, the Eagles walked away with the win by less than a kick midway through 2021.

A lot has changed in 10 months, with the Eagles still being heavily decimated by the league’s Health and Safety protocols, while Richmond have had player availability issues of their own this season.

The Eagles were monstered last weekend by a Port Adelaide side who were ferocious in chasing their first win of the season. The Eagles kicked a solitary goal in the first three quarters, which ultimately contributed to their 84-point loss. They lacked confidence in all areas of the ground and they lost midfield gun, Elliot Yeo, to concussion.

The shining light in the Eagles’ lineup last week was the re-emergence of Alex Witherden in the backline. He accumulated 34 disposals and seven marks, while registering 710 metres gained. He will be the key to holding down the damaging Richmond forwards and getting the ball moving out of their back half.

Richmond are also coming off a loss to the premiers Melbourne on ANZAC Day eve. The Tigers were less than impressive in front of goal, kicking only 8 majors for the match and only the one after the early stages of the third term.

However, the pressure applied to the ball across all sectors of the ground from Richmond was the key to the Demons having an off night in front of goal, and it managed to keep the scoreline respectable throughout the contest.

First-year player Josh Gibcus was a strong contributor in defence in only his fifth game, while veteran Trent Cotchin was everywhere throughout the midfield, though he has been rested from tonight’s match.

Prediction

When reviewing both these sides on paper, I see a lot of talent still lined up for the Eagles. I am tipping West Coast to get the upset and win their first game at home for 2022 by 6 points.
