Eddie McGuire is convinced the ball is a big issue in the AFL

“We’ve got to do something.”

That was the message from Eddie McGuire who spoke at length on Footy Classified about the current Sherrin footballs which he believes are hurting the game.

McGuire had some support from former coach Ross Lyon in his view that the footballs are harder and players are struggling to ‘kick them in’ as there are seven brand new balls on the field in each game.

The bigger issue though according to McGuire is how slippery the balls are and he said Americans watching the game for the first time are shocked with how much fumbling is happening. He also said that umpires are scratching the balls to try and get some grip to actually do a centre bounce.

McGuire made reference to the Steeden ball used in rugby league and said while he doesn’t want a redesign of the Sherrin something to help players grip the ball is much needed with players resorting to gloves and resin on their clothes.
