For 17 years, the football world has either loved or hated the rather freakish success of Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the Patriots.

That relationship began in 2002, eerily, with a Patriot Superbowl win against the then St Louis based Rams.

Since that time, the Patriots have raised the Vince Lombardi Trophy on five occasions and tasted the bitterness of defeat three additional times.

This will be their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons and a chance to put one final exclamation mark on their legacy.

The Rams could not have lived a different existence over the period since that match-up 17 years ago. Lost, forlorn and, frankly, ordinary for much of that time, the club has been rejuvenated under the guidance of Sean McVay.

With a lone playoff game win, seven coaches and just one winning season over a 15-year stretch, the Rams pinched a young offensive coordinator from the Redskins at the end of the 2016 season and the rest has been a fairy tale.

Still only 33, McVay is the next generation of coaches in the NFL, blessed with innovation, new ideas and a take on the game that threatens to become the standard in the near future.

His Rams team will face the immovable presence of the Patriots and all the consistency, professionalism and poise they possess.

What the Rams bring is a hungry defence and the best of the best in the form of Aaron Donald. The Rams don’t lose when Donald finds the quarter-back and knocks him down, they are 9-0 when he completes two sacks in a game. The challenge for New England will be to protect Brady tirelessly and ensure their offence can click into gear.

The Patriots are averaging 39 points per game in the playoffs and if able to produce something similar, might make life a little too difficult for Jared Goff and the Rams offence to match that tally.

Goff does have a habit of holding the ball for a long time prior to making decisions and the Patriots will look to smother the Rams attacking options. A solid front line and timing are key to the success of Los Angeles in this match.

Pundits have predicted a tight affair as New England rarely blow teams away on the Super Bowl stage. Many see a match-winning drive in the fourth quarter that brings about a sixth Superbowl championship for the Pats and a disappointed Rams team that possessed everything but the calm and poise required to finish off the champs of the modern era.

Prediction
While the Patriots are the undoubted kings, this season has been one of their least consistent. Brady isn’t too far from the end of the road and it could be the last opportunity for he and Belichick to share the Superbowl dais.

The McVay led Rams can shock the football world if they can get to Brady and I think they will. If the Pats do double team Donald, it opens up blitz options elsewhere that could decide the game.

New England Patriots 14 – Los Angeles Rams 32.
