Deshaun Watson wants out of Houston and no matter who the coach is for next season, Watson is gone.
Watson had an incredible season statistically, despite the Texans finishing with only four wins this year. The situation in Houston has been brewing for a while now and has reached its boiling point.
The relationship between the front office and Watson at this point seems unrepairable, so it’s time for both parties to accept it and move on.
Any NFL teams in need for a new quarterback will be lining up to sign Watson and why wouldn’t they? He is an elite quarterback and would be a welcome addition to any team.
As it currently stands, the New York Jets is where Watson wants to be traded to. The biggest reason for this is the Jets have recently hired Robert Saleh to be their new head coach and Watson wanted the Texans to interview Saleh for the vacant head coach position (which never happened).
Highly respected and regarded, Saleh has recently been the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and was part of the team’s Super Bowl run.
The appeal to play under Saleh is understandable in Watson’s case, a head coach with a defensive background. Seems like the perfect match, considering how bad the Texans’ defence was this year, but how much better are the Jets going to be compared to the Texans next season?
Defensively, both teams were poor, with the Jets’ overall rank in defence 26th and the Texans’ overall rank in defence 27th.

Both teams feel similar in many ways in both offence and defence. Leaving the Texans to go and play for the Jets will ultimately feel the same for Watson: limited playmakers across the field in receivers, a weak running game and a below-average defensive line.
No matter how good Saleh may be as a head coach, the Jets are still a long way from being competitive and making a run for the playoffs. Watson is ready to win now and luckily there are two teams he should seriously consider being traded to: the Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers.
Watson has proven he can carry a team on offence, no matter the situation he is in. What keeps dragging him down is the defence and the perfect example is this year.
If you looked at the statistics alone of all the quarterbacks this season, Deshaun was the second-best quarterback without question. He put up amazing stats on a losing team which would be incredibly frustrating to continually do, which is the fear playing for the Jets.
It would be the exact same situation, unless they somehow managed to sign some elite receivers and defensive players.
Going to the Jets is not the answer and the only team in the AFC Watson should look at is the Dolphins. The Dolphins are a “rebuilding” team who managed to go 10-6 this season.
Brian Flores has done an incredible job so far with this team, their defence alone this year finished in the top ten and will only get better.
They were unlucky to miss the playoffs and have everything sorted, except who their long-term quarterback will be.
The Dolphins need to target Watson and do whatever is needed to get him to Miami. They would likely trade Tua Tagovailoa and several picks – the Dolphins currently have the number three pick in the draft, which would ultimately be traded away to acquire Watson.
If a trade to the Dolphins is unlikely, then the 49ers should look at trading for Watson. When you think about injuries this season, the 49ers dealt with a heavy amount this year.
According to sources, Jimmy Garoppolo is unlikely to return for next season and the 49ers are ready to win now. Adding Watson to the team makes sense and would be exactly what they need to win a Super Bowl.
Again, look at a healthy 49ers roster and look at their defence. It’s so elite it took them to a Super Bowl last year and had the game won until the fourth quarter.
Even with the loss of Saleh, the 49ers will remain an elite team in defence. San Fransisco have elite receivers, a top-five tight end, a formidable defence and one of the best young head coaches in the league.
If that isn’t enough to convince Watson, then I don’t know what will.
