“I know that you & TWAS have an inner jealousy of Sydney’ SS but remember this article in the Daily Telegraph after the 2017 GF at North Sydney Oval?

Think you must be going senile CS, old son.

A national cup competition is an idea worth exploring

Damn!
Poor kid. Can’t catch a break 😢

Reds dealt massive blow as Jordan Petaia ruled out for the Super Rugby season

“It’s ludicrous that off a scrum, he has ran past the 8 and 6 to make a tackle on the other side of the scrum.”
Just like the week before when he ran past the entire back line to make a cover tackle attempt on the Crusaders winger (only to be bumped off by Newsome)

The problems with the Waratahs' spine

Certain people just have an obsessive compulsion to blame all of Rugby’s woes on him.

The problems with the Waratahs' spine

Why would any need to move? I’m not suggesting that a player from the rebels for example has to play for a Sydney NRC team.
Lets just say there are perhaps no more than 5 or so fully professional Super Rugby contracted players in any match day 23. Maybe this won’t count development squad players. The rest must be from club rugby or un-contracted school leavers (who I guess are playing for a club anyway).
This prevents the disparity where NSW and QLD have to split across 2 NRC teams where every other team doesn’t. If it eventuates that the relative standard of the QLD and NSW comps are bringing a higher standard of uncontracted players than the other states can provide, resulting in an inbalance, then perhaps concessions of an extra player will be warranted.

Holloway showed he has less of a clue of what to do at 6 than at 8! How the openside flanker is making the blindside flankers tackles beggars belief. Put him at lock or get rid of him. He is sharp and dynamic, but only from the shoulders down.
It’s going to be a tough year this year. I hope the young guys learn a lot from it, but the senior players need to lift their support. There is an overall look of laziness amongst them and I wonder how much of it is due to Hooper doing all the heavy lifting. Chasing all the kicks, making all the cover tackles. There looks to be a subconscious feeling of “it’s all right, Hooper will get there”.
I’m not liking Simmons as a Captain, nor Beale as VC. Simmons carries himself like a man defeated. He reminds me of those big guys who feel like the need to apologise for taking up too much space. Shoulders slumped and an unshakable sadface. I think it’s impairing his game.
At some point in the year the leadership is going to need to change. It is a shame that Ned’s concussion issues are continuing as we could really use him and IIRC he’s being talked of as a good leader in the group. Straight talking country boy. If he can keep playing he could be a good captain for the coming years. Simmons won’t last.

The problems with the Waratahs' spine

Playing devils advocate. But we see a lot of school boys being added to Super team squads these days who play NRC long before they play Super Rugby. But how many actual club rugby players that have not had a line from the school’s pathways went on to get contracts?
Don’t get me wrong, I love the NRC and what it means to pathways. But of those 100 odd graduates, how many didn’t have a pathway already?
I don’t really want the NRC to be just a Super Rugby squad development competition. I think there should be more games like the Rebel A V Tah A game for that. I want to see more guys from club rugby given a crack. I wonder if a cap on pro players in NRC is needed to even out the one super side feeding the one NRC side disparity that exists compared to NSW and QLD.

CS is quickly trawling through his archived listings of Newscorp articles to find something else to quote. He’ll be back. With another article to quote. No matter how unrelated.

A national cup competition is an idea worth exploring

The Club competition and NRC don’t live in the same space. If one requires the demise of the other, then nobody will get what they want, and RA and the Wallabies won’t get what they need.

A national cup competition is an idea worth exploring

You’d have to be illiterate to think what he did was quote.

Israel Folau takes just five minutes to score on Super League debut

Based on the RWC retained wallabies is the best way to look at it from a squad strength perspective.
Also, you won’t see anybody complaining that the Tahs were hard done by. Yet quite a few will talk about others from the franchises that deserved a spot on the plane to Japan. Tahs have the weakest squad by far and a brand new coach. It should surprise nobody that they will struggle at least to begin with.
Sure I agree the manner of the loss of the last 2 games is very disappointing. But in the context of the year they are at most 1 win behind realistic expectations. There is plenty of time to regroup and show some good signs by year end.

Too soon for doom and gloom at Waratahs?

As I understand it. There was no extra revenue for SANZAAR as rights to Japan were already locked in at a rate that was for a secondary feed to a non participating country. So while there was cost to play in Japan. There was no more income from it.

The Wrap: The Sunwolves and Super Rugby’s shame file

Cheika put him forward, but Penny was part of the decision to take him on.

The Wrap: The Sunwolves and Super Rugby’s shame file

I think defense was improved on the weekend generally, except for Beale. If he tries to strip a player instead of just committing to the tackle one more time….. 😡 😡 🥊 His attempt of Koriobete was rubbish and he rushed out of the line leaving Mark stranded with a 2 on 1 and 20m of ground to cover.

But the defense coach is brand new and was a Penny pick. I think it’s too early to be making a call on needing a change there

The Wrap: The Sunwolves and Super Rugby’s shame file

Funny, the Rebs have him listed as 106kg!
I like the kid, I think he’s a smart footballer. But there is no way he’s over 100kg..

Horror weekend for Australian Super Rugby teams makes Castle's broadcast rights a hard sell

Marky N is 19, only started playing rugby relatively recently and is in his first year as a pro athlete.
Folau was 24 with 90 odd NRL games under his belt when he joined the Tahs.

As good as Folau was, I’d wager in 5 years time Mark will be a much more complete player.

Horror weekend for Australian Super Rugby teams makes Castle's broadcast rights a hard sell

It’s a shame that the Sunwolves are departing. They are what the comp needs and their fans what all teams could only wish to have.
I think outside the hardliners, most fans don’t really care about whether its a conference system or round robin. They just want a team to follow and for them to be doing well. The funk has set in though and it’ll be hard to shake no matter what format you pick. The things that bring crowds are winning, and crowds. Nobody wants to go out of their way to sit in a 3/4 empty stadium to watch their team lose. Sunwolves games have atmosphere even if they don’t have results. I also think the daytime games are far better for bringing in a crowd when you are trying to build something.
As for the Tahs. It’s going to be a long season. You cannot blame the youth though. Many of the seasoned players are looking lazy. Penny has to make do with what he’s got for now, but I expect he’ll be planning for a different looking 23 come the end of the season. I’m glad there are a few Tahs “A” games being played and that they are available to watch. These guys need to be playing and not sitting on the bench or just training. Pat Tafa for one needs to be elevated to the main team. Lasila looks like he could ad some spark, but Moeroa is a little underdone. He needs more time. Another up and comer for the front row is baby faced Darcy Breen. It looked like he was towelling up Fereti Sa’aga in the scrum. Sure, that isn’t the most dominant LH getting around but not bad for a 20 year old pup.
Maybe next year 😊

Spared a turnover? You mean missed out on getting a penalty.

Tahs spared turnover after the ref takes a tumble

What? He only scored one? Meh..

Israel Folau takes just five minutes to score on Super League debut

Yeah, I don’t know if the on ground screen is blurry or what, but that was clear as day on the replay.

Brumbies call for red card consistency

That’s odd. You’d rather get robbed than get offended?

Folau admits he considered ending his career after RA sacking

With the pack the way it is we cannot have Beale at 12. If the pack isn’t dominant he’s not going to have any room to work and it’ll be sideways all game.
Beale at 12 worked in 2014 purely because we had a pack that included Kepu, TPN, Skelton, Potgeiter and Palu. Heck, even Douglas was in top form. Compare that pack to what the Tahs have now. Dual playmakers won’t work. I like Hunt for assuredness, but he’s not going to get us across the line. The backline is crying out for Moeroa to be good enough to provide punch. He’s playing in the emerging side at 12 today and Lasila is on the wing also. God I hope they have blinders.

Too soon for doom and gloom at Waratahs?

Don’t think playoff’s were ever on the cards this year. But I was hoping for a bit better of a showing after a good trial against the Highlanders and some good things against the Crusaders. Last 2 games have been a worry though.
A Penny for the coaches thoughts.

Too soon for doom and gloom at Waratahs?

Not really. Just looking at the final, only two of the Force’s starting 15 from the final were new at the start of the NRC. Pama Fou and Byron Ralston. Maybe another 3 on the bench (Hardman, Grant and Strachan).

RA confirms national club competition in the works; NRC future unclear

Not to mention I believe HBO are going into the streaming service themselves. Another shot to the kneecaps of Foxtel.
