Forgot to add, he wasn’t a drinker ( they put soft drinks in beer bottles in photos) , and apparently a different personality off the field, a bit like Warner and John Snow.

Pat Cummins isn't Dennis Lillee's fast-bowling equal - he's actually much better

Lillee debuted at 21 and had 2 years out with injury, not so different a scenario as suggested. He didn’t play much in nz either, and is a handful of games in Pakistan and Sri Lanka a statistically significant sample? Apart from a short period before Thomson’s injury, he carried the attack on his own, and pitches in Australia (apart from Perth) were often far from green tops. Anyone remember the MCG in the 80’s? You can only play against the opponents you’re given, just like earlier greats like Davidson, Lindwall, Gregory, Spofforth etc. Personally I’d be happy with either one, and rate them both above McGrath. And it’s impossible to compare them to bowlers very few if any alive have seen. Same goes for leg spinners. Why is Warne now always assumed to have been better than O’Reilly and Grimmet, other than having the opportunity to play many more games?

Agree. Re Smith laughing, he’s not a first offender, but if the umpire was Joel Wilson I can imagine any number of players laughing at many of his decisions. If they didn’t laugh they’d have to cry.

Tom Curran’s umpire act is worse than it appears - and the game cannot tolerate it

If Carey’s throw had missed the stumps and given the batters the chance of runs, would they have stayed put in the “spirit of cricket”?

COMMENT: Cummins failed the moral test and tarnished these Ashes. He had the chance to be a legend and blew it

If Roar expert/guru can’t/won’t say, must be something political!
