Doesn’t seem to reach the controversy heights that it does in league. And I’d say that the block running is worse at times. But it’s probably seen as part and parcel of the game with runners going here and everywhere. League is a little more linear so decoys sit out like a sore thumb

Obstruction turning a 'simple' game into complicated mess of decoys and defenders milking penalties

As an aside I’d be curious as to what the relationship between 5 metre offside line and 10 metres and injuries…

More subs, player loans, cap changes?: How the NRL can be proactive to fix the early-year injury crisis

Seems like it would help. How does the top 30 work at the moment? Can teams bring people in for say a month, particularly during SOO then they go back out? I know salary cap issues come into play. But surely a boatload of fringe players wouldn’t cause issues? Although they have minimum wages and the Player’s Association would have a fit…

There’s also the obvious length of the season, which starts way too early, involves way too many games, all to satisfy who?
Betting companies.
I’d say that some players are starting to get dangerously close to 40 games in a year with pre-season, full season, SOO and finals games all taken into account. Add the helter skelter nature of modern NRL games and you can begin to understand why there are increasingly large amounts of injuries occurring.
I’d also be curious as to the nature of the training these guys are doing during the week. Is there a high level of contact training? or is it more strength and conditioning?

I remember running these plays as a kid when playing union. It was always called a block play because it’s main intention was to block the defenders essentially from coming through into the backfield. In hindsight it probably should have always been illegal but it was never policed. But now we have half the team, often more, in front of the ball most times a team tries to put on a play. In these scenarios the benefit of the doubt really needs to go to the defending team as they are the ones that are onside.
I’ve actually stopped watching much NRL lately. I thought it was all about pushing through the line and catching to ball past the block runner and not running behind them. I thought it was always a bit black and white for my tastes, but understood the rationale behind making it as clear as possible. Surely they’re not thinking about walking back the interpretation?

Well ironically it’s the cuddling type tackles that result in hip drops in the NRL…

There are only two ways rugby can go from here - and there's no middle ground between physicality and safety

Well White is the form 9 at the moment. So…

'Hang on': Forgotten Wallaby tipped for big year as Wright reveals 'biggest work-on'

I’ve seen this question come up a lot lately. It’s because the player with the ball sets the height that the tackle has to take place in. if they want to run 3 feet off the ground then the tackler will have to adjust.

NRL can reduce concussion headache by expanding the number of interchange players - with a retro twist

Yes! Ref should call use it at scrum time much quicker. And if the props pop it really shouldn’t matter…

WR's mooted law changes are great - but show there's a hell of a lot wrong with rugby in 2024, and that sucks

I’m actually pro Mac point stadium. Bellerive is not the answer to any question

If the stands are done even remotely properly most people will be out of the rain…
Actually I went and looked and the wettest month is October. Followed by December and November.

We’re really not going to lose the contested high balls out of the game. If Thompson actually got up the tip doesn’t happen. What penalizing the outcome does is actually get guys to jump up for the contest. We actually have very little aerial contest at the moment. As most of the time it’s just the attacking team trying to get bodies in the way

I dunno, shut him down by trying to make a tackle?

To me there’s two alternatives that would have worked. Either the team is based in Launceston with a massively upgraded York Park. or the team is based in Hobart with a new build.

My issue is really only with the roof. It doesn’t need a roof. Really it doesn’t. It rains less in Hobart than just about anywhere else…

I think they can make a genuine attempt to contest the ball. However, if they are outjumped AND put the player in a dangerous position then I think it’s easy enough to award a penalty.
Not sure that the NRL needs to define a landing zone, but maybe they do?

Dude, everyone thinks that JWH should have been run out of the game. No one thinks he’s a clean skin…

He was definitely an outlier

Things can simultaneously be an accident and foul play. He contacted a guy high. Doesn’t really matter what lead to the incident…

The over the ball technique needs to be wiped from the game. It results in multiple head clashes each and every single game

Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary

You draw the line when the players start to go into tackles in a way that is unlikely to cause high contact. If May does go into contact with a legitimate tackling technique the debate around the contact magically disappears as his head/shoulder/whatever hits Walsh in the ribs. The duty to bend wording might be daft, but the idea that hey if he bends and puts himself into a position to make a legal tackle isn’t

For a game that exists specifically because players needed a fair go from administrators I can’t believe that they aren’t at the cutting edge of player welfare…If anything the gap between the NRL and other sports codes is widening more and more. I’d say they are now at least 5 years behind where they should be. It will take years to get the tackling technique of players to change. But nothing has been done and the May-Walsh incident is just further example that the tackling technique in the modern game has huge issues.

I’d say the federal government is also pretty terrible at procurement…

Getting the codes together is hard. Getting the south of Canberra together with the north will be harder…

Absolutely agreed! They would have even likely got local contractors giving better rates cause their kids went to the school…
