Let’s start by pulling no punches. The 2011 Rugby World Cup was a failure for the Wallabies, and a dismal one at that. That’s…
The power hitting of M.Marsh, Wade and McDermott could have been handy at this World Cup, given that the top order seems to have found its groove – but the selectors have invested too heavily in Stoinis and Carey to change their minds now.
Stoinis' slow scoring a World Cup worry
Stoinis is the concern for me. He hasn’t looked great with the bat or ball lately – but the selectors have put all their eggs in one basket, having given very little opportunity to Mitch Marsh for the allrounder spot recently.
Maxwell's hot form a World Cup boon for Australia
I’d take Handscomb for his ability to be the spare keeper and a very good backup batsman.
After demolishing Sri Lanka at home, here's how Australia's Ashes squad is shaping up
Batting average 40 vs 33
Bowling average 31 vs 33
New look Australian ODI side continues to flourish
Yes Watson is still eligible for selection in ODIs and T20, he just wasn’t selected.
At this stage I think Watson is still superior to Mitchell Marsh but you can see the logic in giving the younger guy a go and hoping he comes good.
New look Australian ODI side continues to flourish
Thanks David.
It will be great to see Spieth, Day and McIlroy push each other this year. The US commentators are gushing over Jordan and that’s fair, he is a star, but I don’t think he’ll have it all his own way in the majors with these other young champions around.
Jason Day shows he is ready to take on Jordan Spieth
At the same age and same number of games JC is miles ahead of Franklin in the stats.
Grown-up Giants leave Swans thunderstruck
LC was doing the coaching last year anyway… it’s just official now.
Famous Giants victory means a genuine Sydney rivalry is born
St Kilda will be tough, there’s a chance of a (mental) hangover after such a big result for this young group.
Grown-up Giants leave Swans thunderstruck
Yes, even just keeping one of Patton and Boyd would be a good complement to JC in the forward line.
Grown-up Giants leave Swans thunderstruck
Missing out on Franklin was a blessing for GWS. With Cameron, Patton and Boyd in the squad there’s enough quality key forwards without having an overrated show pony taking up vast sums of salary cap space.

Milking the bowling… I’d rather Petersen bowling at me than Morkel.

For all the criticism of Marsh he truly looks classy at the crease whenever he bats. His mediocre career record is baffling.

There’s also a good chance that the 4 specialist bowlers will all be left-armers.
Australia pick Hogg, Hodge and Haddin for World T20
I had Marsh, Lynn and Paine in my starting XI.
Fair enough if they want Maxwell there as a spin option instead, but I just can’t understand how Marsh’s good form is worthy of test selection but not for the format where he’s actually scoring the runs.
Hazelwood unlucky too.
Australia pick Hogg, Hodge and Haddin for World T20
So Shaun Marsh, who is a T20 gun, but an average first-class batsman…. misses out on T20 World Cup selection but gets picked in the test squad?
Australia pick Hogg, Hodge and Haddin for World T20
Got to pick Tim Paine as the specialist keeper… too risky giving that job to Dunk. Maxwell did very little in the BBL to earn a berth.
1. WARNER
2. FINCH
3. WATSON
4. MARSH
5. BAILEY (C)
6. LYNN
7. PAINE
8. FAULKNER
9. CUMMINS
10. STARC
11. HOGG
Why Hoggy and Dunk should be off to Bangladesh: my T20 WC squad
I don’t think anyone suggested he isn’t a good ODI player.
How did Marsh get picked over White?
Sadly I don’t think anyone would really be surprised by that.
Bailey dropped for South Africa tour: Marsh, Pattinson, Bird recalled
I think you’d find that most people would pick Marsh in the ODI squad because he has a pretty good record in that format.
His test and FC career records are awful though, and yet again we have the selectors hypnotised by a couple of decent white ball knocks from this bloke.
I just don’t get it.
P.S great article Anthony.
Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors
They suspend play on outside courts when the roofs are closed so that’s not an issue.
As for pushing the tournament back, it will never happen as TA wouldn’t allow it. Too much money at stake to risk moving it away from the holiday season.
Sam, can we get our hopes up yet?
I think Sam has a better chance of beating Serena, but getting past Ivanovic first will be tough.
Sam, can we get our hopes up yet?
Not the biggest issue in the world, but I just can’t warm to these green ODI outfits we wear at home.

If you’re a keen tennis fan, the Foxtel coverage is excellent.
Thought I suppose if the FTA networks thought RG and US Open would rate they’d broadcast it.
Sam, can we get our hopes up yet?
Ronan, you’re right in saying the squad seems to be a batsman short, and it’s also a backup keeper short. Handscomb clearly fits both of these roles so his omission, on the back of great form, is baffling. On SEN this morning Justin Langer mentioned that there was no need for a backup keeper because Wade, Handscomb and Paine will be in England at the time – which is useless if Carey gets injured during the warm up.
I would have preferred Handscomb to keep and bat at 5, allowing Maxwell and another hitter (M. Marsh, Turner or McDermott) to come in and bludgeon at the death. Instead they’ve put all their eggs in one basket with Stoinis who seems out of form and even when he does make runs, struggles to rotate the strike.
Australia's Cricket World Cup squad is too conservative
