AFL Power Rankings 2019: Round 21

What a weird weekend of football. I could be sad that Fremantle’s season is effectively over, I could be amused by the impressive efforts of Essendon, North or GWS put into losing, or I could be enthused at the prospect of continued uncertainty around finals positioning. A fortnight of 2019 footy remains for ten teams.

Ah, Albany is a great spot. Fond memories of spending time in Walpole + Denmark a little to the west when I was living in WA. Oh, by the time everything reopens properly I’ll be a graduated uni student. Talk about a horrendous time to join the workforce, eh?

I get you, Richie. Perhaps it’s just that after months of this being a problem, finally getting a handle on it in SA has made me (and evidently our leaders) quite cautious about anything ruining that streak. I doubt the Crows cluster-fudge (no mater how overblown that was) would’ve helped sway any minds either.

I definitely understand Victoria has a decent handle barring the couple of hot spots, wishing you guys all the best. The better all jurisdictions in the country have a genuine handle on this the better, eh?

I’m quite the enigma, a young guy who watches the ABC these days, and I wholeheartedly disagree with a lot of that, WASS.

Downgrading their website would literally achieve the opposite of what media in a contemporary setting is aspiring to – you need web based journalism to survive. Same with the social media presence. You do know they have their own regional facebook pages because what is interesting in SA isn’t in QLD and so on and so forth, right?

Can’t necessarily disagree with your final point there, but regardless of ownership or responsibilities I honestly don’t care about viewing a public broadcaster with a small political allegiance. Sensible people are able to put it aside; besides, their news programming is leagues better than anything the commercial broadcasters put up.

It sure beats a theoretical, dominant privately-owned company (with mammoth reach in this nation and globally) being so obviously in the pocket of conservative agendas it’s difficult to spot the blurring of the lines. Oh wait, that exists.

Why I’m worried about the quality of NRL journalism

Haha, precisely.

Once again you’d be thankful to be in your little country WA town, eh? I know I’m grateful to be in “backwater” Adelaide … doing so much better than the metropolises over east.

Oh, Richie, there’s already the conspiratorial types ranting about a vaccine that doesn’t even exist.

The word idiot doesn’t seem to encapsulate them tbh

Haha, alrighty then

I can’t see why they wouldn’t be allowed to bring their families to Queensland, but I suppose it depends on how lenient the state gov are being.

In fairness, the outbreak does seem to be largely confined to two major places (a Maccas and Cedar Meats). But yeah, it seems like their infection rates are going to be the worst in Australia for a long while.

Hoping that was an intentional mistake… 😛

Haha, don’t worry, some of us West Aussie fans can take the humour.

Yup, I’m with you. SA is so damn close to eradicating known cases within our borders, WA ain’t doing too bad either. I love footy but if a little compromise to protect our states is the penalty we’ll pay, I have no qualms with the four teams headed off to Queensland.

I won’t lie Spruce, even I laughed at that 😂

Fortunately they are

I’d have no sympathy for them if they didn’t tbh

They probably could’ve given them an extension for sure, but as a resident I’m content with the decision tbh.

Can’t imagine it’s going to utterly destroy the AFL’s endeavor to get the season back underway, because Queensland beckons for the clubs you’d think.

Hodge at Freo is the type of alternative past I like to imagine, BM.

Thanks for the mini history lesson through your comments tonight, you’re sending me down a rabbit hole.

When was your team the undisputed best in the AFL? Part 1

Well, they’re very similar to Freo, except with a dramatically worse collapse during the second half of the season.

So, yeah, I’d say North were the best team. Up until Round 10, 2016.

As Marty says below, though, Freo never had a full collapse from their perch. North on the other hand scarcely made finals in 2016. A wee bit different tbh.

When was your team the undisputed best in the AFL? Part 1

The author’s caveats fit the bill for Freo, though.

Modern times, check.
Sustainably the best team over a timeframe – well, we were the best team for an extended period of 2015 (until we flopped granted) …. sooo, check.
Undisputed best or close to it – well, you can say us and the Eagles (oooh, many a dream of a derby granny was had) or the Hawks (fair, they beat us twice very convincingly in 2015). Uh, check.

I do understand why you’d think Freo don’t deserve to be on there. Hell, I struggle to comprehend a extended time other than that first part of 2015 when we were legitimately very good. 2014/2013, maybe, given we had spurts of greatness (.. all for nought).

But, according to the caveats, I’d say the authors’ done well to fit Freo in a narrowly defined definition of “undisputed best”. For a smidgen of footy’s history.

Oprah would be a good umpire

😱

When was your team the undisputed best in the AFL? Part 1

That’s a fair point on the Collingwood win; given the Giants’ general stumbling block seemed to be prelims, I think the prelim was, in a sense, their grand-final-before-the-grand final. It doesn’t excuse the pathetic performance in the decider, of course.

When was your team the undisputed best in the AFL? Part 1

I was happily nodding along with your comments until the last line.

I get it, Freo might not have been the strongest minor premiers in ‘15 – that was made clear in the finals. But for the first part of the 2015 season, we *were* the best team in the comp and this was following two successive top four finishes.

There isn’t a doubt that we ran out of steam – and everything since 2015 has been decisively ordinary – but I take umbrage at the assertion our inclusion in the list was a “laugh”.

If we’re banning annoying media personalities than Basil Zempilas can join that list. Hard to believe he wants to become mayor of Perth or something.. 😂

AFL hits Crows players and assistant coach with bans for social distancing breach

I’m reluctant, not mute. I just think it’s ironic that WA based fans (of which, I am not) get lambasted for whining, whilst Victorian fans can be equally as boisterous in their complaints.

Take your points though, and yeah, I’d definitely watch footy wherever it’s held.

I suspect you missed the part where I exclaimed my reluctance for this exact argument, spruce.

But sure, I’ll engage – I wasn’t suggesting interstate teams are oppressed, I was merely posing the point that certain Victorian teams also have a large home ground advantage in the vein of some interstate teams that you mention.

I do love the fact that this argument that the Eagles/Crows are so so privileged negates to mention Freo + Port, and I suspect it’s because the latter two are traditionally weaker sides. I betcha that if Eagles were a crappy team, you wouldn’t be droning on about their ‘advantages’.

I should mention, as I made clear, that I have zero care in any of these tedious arguments, and honestly I’d watch footy even if Freo were relegated to Antartica and Richmond never ever left the Melbourne metro area.
