I’ve written for this site since I was 17, and am fortunate enough to share column inches with Cam each week, so I’m well aware of how opinion pieces work, Pete.

I’m just not on board with a piece so adamantly defending De Goey while simultaneously criticising the media so intensely. The media is not without fault. There’s huge problems, and to be honest I genuinely thought the beat-up over Ginnivan and Quaynor’s TikTok was precisely the wrong kind of media beat-up exaggerated by the mere coincidence it occurred at the same time of De Goey’s controversy.

But De Goey’s behaviour over the past few years has been downright disrespectful, and there is absolutely nothing defendable about his conduct in Bali, consensual or not. The media was absolutely within their bounds to critcise him and the Pies for the Bali trip – especially given this is yet another time he’s behaved in deeply inappropriate manner.

You can critique the media, the club and the player, which I’m actively doing. Cam’s piece was hyperbolic and written with bad context, attacking his own industry while giving a pass to disgusting behaviour. That’s why he’s missed the mark.

Media bullying of Jordan De Goey has been a disgusting witch-hunt

You’ve missed the mark by a long way here, Cam.

Man, it’s satire from what I can tell. I was pretty vehemently anti-Liberal but still quite enjoyed it.

REVEALED: Josh Frydenberg's to-do list as the AFL's next CEO

Three points: a) it’s clearly satire, b) politics and sports are absolutely intertwined despite many people believing otherwise and c) Campbell Newman 🤢

REVEALED: Josh Frydenberg's to-do list as the AFL's next CEO

Gotta say, the fact there’s a Herald Sun exclusive interview with Bailey so quickly irks me – not to mention reports I’ve seen this morning suggesting Beveridge has called for the AFL to drop their illicit drugs policy.

I’m deeply sympathetic towards mental health issues, but this has swung way past that towards a rapid PR exercise.

Six Points: No.1 pick needs to cut the dirty play out now, and why the Bailey Smith scandal was handled perfectly

“Your support of Freo wavers way too much depending on your emotions.”

Welcome to footy, I can’t speak for 13th but my optimism varied wildly between the halves of footy at the MCG on Saturday

Six Points: Time for Eagles and Simpson to part ways, and why wounded Weitering wasn't what cost the Blues

Is this the part where I make a joke about “something, something Tim returning to WA to join the fantastic Dockers?”. Ahh, I’m only joking, I think we’re sorted with Darcy (who had a helluva game of his own on the weekend!!).

I didn’t get to watch the Eagles-Dogs game, but I saw a great quote somewhere along the lines of “you know a team is going atrociously when an opposition garners a 101 point victory through 16 individual goal kickers and the collective response is ‘meh'”.

Six Points: Time for Eagles and Simpson to part ways, and why wounded Weitering wasn't what cost the Blues

Jeez, just saw what you’re talking about. Was bound to happen with a crowd that large (and that boisterous).

I’m backing your boys but don’t think it’ll be a blowout. Collingwood are likely gonna go down but will do so swinging!

Hoping it’s a good game, I’m headed to it and depending on the result of Freo’s game 12 hours beforehand I might be in need of some close, competitive footy!!

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 11

I did say I wasn’t confident!

Haha, nah, was indeed a mistake. I have tipped Carlton, to be clear.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 10

And I am completely terrified.

Six Points: Even stars need to be called out for dog acts, and Port Adelaide's path forward is clear

Since when is it her prerogative in deciding the balance of power? It’s crappy but in this society there’s an ingrained power imbalance between a white man and a (rich or not) indigenous woman. For the third time the jeans comment was in bad taste but was more an encapsulation of the stuff the Rioli’s had been dealing with.

The lack of support from the Hawks and the leadership team, I’m sure you’d agree, is the more sickening story here.

'We are sorry': Hawks respond to bombshell Cyril Rioli reveal on Jeff Kennett comment that saw him leave the club

Rich white man v indigenous woman. I can’t profess to ever knowing or being able to comprehend what Rioli or her partner were thinking, but you’ll have to be silly to not recognise there’s a disproportionate balance there.

Again, the joke individually wouldn’t have been awfully detrimental, it would’ve just been the icing on the cake.

'We are sorry': Hawks respond to bombshell Cyril Rioli reveal on Jeff Kennett comment that saw him leave the club

My read on it is that it wasn’t the comment per se, that was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. Mind you, the report he dug around in his pockets and cracked a “joke” about wanting money to buy a new pair of jeans doesn’t read well when you consider the balance between the pair.

I am NOT having a good day, lol.

1-2.

I rate your new moniker. Took me a moment to realise who you were!

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 2

So jealous you’ll be at the Freo game!

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 1

I picked the Saints, it isn’t wrong.

Jones’ position is dumb as hell, and I’ll leave it at that.

On a more optimistic note I gotta say, Macca, don’t apologise for poor journalism – it’s a nice piece! I know we’re at each other a lot over Carlton but I’m genuinely wanting to see success for them. I do think they’ve got to nail down the consistency, and am excited to see Voss’ impact.

Not that I’m trying to shoehorn Freo into a discussion, but watch for our two teams to be a barometer of each other. Both are young, both can be deeply inconsistent, and both have a chance to break into finals next year.

(If you could stop beating us in heartbreakers, that would be nice too.)

Carlton in 2022: A mystery wrapped in a riddle

McDonald’s clearly doesn’t understand that being vaccinated is about protecting others – there’s plenty of people who’d love to get the vaccine who can’t (people with medical exemptions, young kids at the moment). Also as people who are much more at risk of spreading COVID (constant travel, being in multiple states, getting a heap of privileges a vast majority aren’t) AFL players are precisely the industry mandates should be applying too.

The Crows’ Varnhagen is running the risk of ruining two careers, as because she’s an ICU nurse in SA, she’s supposed to have at least one dose by Nov 1. So freaking stupid of her.

‘Ethically wrong’: AFL star not keen on mandatory jabs

Brilliant (comment and show)

Carlton turmoil continues as CEO leaves the club

Yep, pretty nice morning then late shower expected for Adelaide. Of all the times for rain, it’s during the game!

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Preliminary finals

Oh for sure, but I’m not sure when he’d have spoken to the Lions – it was barely 24 hours between their loss on Saturday and the report emerging last night!

Big Footy’s like a broken clock. The regurgitate enough rumours it was predictable one would pan out!
