The A-League failing to engage with fans online
The conditions they rode in today at Sepang prove how tough the riders are. Riding in those terrible conditions requires an immense amount of concentration, skill and finesse.
Stoner was in a different league today. It’s building nicely for next season when he’ll be fit and ready to go against Rossi and an ever-improving Lorenzo.
Motorbike racing is the only remaining gladiatorial sport
It’s great to see so many casual fans enjoyed what they saw from the Australian MotoGP. It wasn’t the most exciting of battles compared to previous races – you have to check out some of the great battles of the 500cc era – but the intensity of the contest between Casey and Valentino was great.
The sport deserves a wider audience and let’s hope it keeps growing in Australia.
For those of you new to motorbike racing and eager to find out more, I’d recommend watching a doco called ‘Faster’ which is available in most stores. Here’s the trailer – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEMmKyR11yM
It’s a good introduction to the sport for newbies and gives a good insight into the mindset of the riders.

Thanks for the comments folks.
Megatron, the rider you are referring to is Craig Jones. He was killed in a World Supersport race at Brands Hatch in the UK last year. He was hit by Australia’s Andrew Pitt.

I’m not referring to west Sydney as a Rugby heartland. In that quote I’m talking about the Sydney Swans, hence not specifically west Sydney.
West Sydney franchises need to find star power
It looks as though the Western Bulldogs aren’t interested in Fev. The list of potential teams interested is dwindling and let’s not forget working out a trade with Carlton, considering his value, will be difficult.
Should idiocy really cost Fevola his job?
Thanks for the comments folks.
I’m hearing Carlton have decided to trade Fev next week. Paul Roos ruled out a move by Sydney earlier. This certainly adds spice to trade week!
I appreciate that we all have different opinions about his behaviour, but I’m sure most of us agree that the guy is entitled to a private holiday with his family and shouldn’t have to put with this sort of coverage – http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/09/30/142691_gold-coast-news.html

It's time for the launch of Rugby Australia
I agree Hansie. Todt appears favourite to land the FIA leadership next month, but I fear his leadership style and rule won’t be far removed from what Mosley has offered. It’s not what the FIA needs.
Is Formula 1 rotten to its very core?
Renault have been given a 2-year suspended ban – ie will only be enforced if found guilty of a comparable breach during that time.
Lifetime ban for Flavio Briatore, including ban on driver management. Five-year ban for Pat Symonds.
Nelson Piquet had immunity and Fernando Alonso is cleared of having any knowledge of the incident.
Renault statement: “We fully accept the decision and apologise unreservedly to the F1 community for this unacceptable behaviour.” They are expected to stay in F1 but will need to find new management.

I wrote this piece before the West Sydney news broke this morning but I maintain that the FFA would be better off going ahead with an eleven team comp next season considering the financial question marks over the WS franchise and the disadvantages they will face relative to Melbourne Heart who is well advanced in signing personnel.
Eleven teams is the only option for next season
Marlon, Eddie Irvine was handpicked by Michael Schumacher and Jean Todt as a capable number two who wouldn’t worry Schumacher with his pace, so it was hardly an inspired choice considering Irvine had proven his capabilities at Jordan. Likewise with Massa who served as a Ferrari tester and had spells at Sauber before he was promoted to the Ferrari race team.
Both were relatively conservative choices.

AndyRoo, I’m a firm believer in midweek games in the summer months, especially around the December-January period. There’s little competition from other codes, kids are on school holidays and people are more likely to get out and about in the warmer weather.
Where's the promotion for the new A-League season?
Yes Tom it is something that has been mentioned several times but has not been well thought out. It needs to be researched and no doubt the FIA will do that. There are, as you say, some very obvious problems associated with such a design.
Massa incident highlights the inherent danger in motorsport
Yes it is a harsh penalty and in my mind a reaction by the FIA to the Massa and Surtees accidents and warning to other teams to ensure safety is not compromised in anyway. Very harsh though as I say.

Good points for Webber tonight. Jumps into second place in the championship and closes in on Button.
Webber faces new pressures from a country that expects.
I wrote this column a day before flying to America so I missed the fallout and I only recently had a chance to read through all the comments, prompted by a friend who disagreed with my point of view.
Thank you all for your comments.
I’ll clarify some points raised:
JMS, Leanne Tander has a V8 Supercar ride at the enduro’s this season.
SJ, I didn’t pick the picture to accompany the column.
I knew this was a controversial and divisive issue and I’m not surprised by the split in opinion.
We are all entitled to our opinion and in mine, based on my experiences covering V8 races across the country, I think it is outdated and not really appropriate for what should be family friendly environments.
Finally, I think Mick of Newie said it best with:
Wow. I am amazed at the response to what appears to me as a pretty obvious point, that Cheerleaders are a mysoginist archaic part of sport that needs to go. When we have got rid of them can we then get rid of Jim Beam ads on Foxsports at 2pm on Sunday afternoon during the football. They make watching football with my 6 and 8 year old sons very uncomfortable.
Remove the cheerleaders from sport
Well the reception for Beckham in his return to LA wasn’t good.
Playing in LA for the first time since his return, in a friendly against AC Milan, he was constantly booed and even had a bit of a confrontation with a fan at halftime.
Some of the banners in the crowd read, “Go home fraud” and “Hey Becks, Here Before You, Here After You, Here Despite You.”

Koala Bear, see my previous post. It’s used when referring to the American version of the game. The league is called Major League Soccer.

Midfielder, I do use the term football over soccer, see the rest of my columns, but when referring to the American game I use what they use, soccer, as American football means something entirely different.

Some other Melbourne Heart news – they’ve announced ex-Socceroo Ante Milicic and former Denmark and Manchester United star Jesper Olsen as assistant coaches.
