“…the blowout margin didn’t reflect the final match of the year, …”
What’s that supposed to mean ?? A blowout is a blowout !!
Blowouts , especially in GFs are the biggest problem facing the AFL today if it wants to be taken as a serious, exciting and sellable sporting competition and business.
They are annoying, depressing and embarrassing !!!

Well thanks for that well thought out and intelligent response.

You just can’t tell which side(s) will do this -and that’s the whole problem.
The rule that could have changed the AFL grand final
Been saying it for years !! The biggest scourge facing the AFL, ESPECIALLY GRAND FINALS is
BLOWOUTS !!!
This GF deserved to be a better/closer game. So often (for whatever reason ???) a side will get a run on and the opposition’s will to compete just -drops…
My suggestion would be to give the ball to the opposition after a goal is scored (like in basketball)
– via a kick in from the 50m circle
???
The rule that could have changed the AFL grand final
The title of this piece could apply to so many AFL Grand Final losers !
I mean how many blowouts do we see in GFs !!
How could it be that the second best team in a professional sporting competition is so inferior to the winning team ??
It’s a terrible look for all concerned with AFL footy and needs a change in rules/structure of the game.
I was hoping for a Demons win but come on ! the doggies certainly didn’t deserve to be thrashed like that. . . and how many GFs are blowouts !!!

'One minute to end 57 years of pain': Talking points from Melbourne's extraordinary premiership win
I do check out old games on youtube, a lot, and I sometimes cringe at the game back then.
So slow, not a hint of tactics…
Other advantages that I see for my proposed changes are that it would bring back some of the classic old time type of players – fullbacks with booming kicks, high marking forwards (and ruckmen) kicking bags of goals…
When was the last time we saw a Brownlow medalist who wasn’t a scampering, high posession gathering ‘mid-fielder’?
AFL rule changes to combat defensive play
I’ve said it before and I will say it again !
What they should do, is when a goal is scored give the ball to the team scored against to kick in from the 50m arc.
More scoring ; closer games; less blowouts; less congestion…
AFL rule changes to combat defensive play
I put all this up here a few years ago, basically to address the problem of blowouts but it could also help with low scoring… When a goal is scored, the team scored against gets to kick the ball in from the 50 meter arc. To cater for the situation where a big comeback is happening there would be a system of ‘captains calls’ where a team could elect to have the restart with the traditional centre bounce. This would be limited to 2 a quarter ?, 3 in the last quarter ?… As stated the original thoughts were to inhibit runaway blowouts. Also these changes could see a return to the game of fullbacks with booming kicks and fullforwards capable of taking big contested marks and kicking straight, removing the present day emphasis of just having a fleet of fast midfielers ! Thoughts ?
How an old NBA rule could boost AFL scoring rates
Oh, I’ve just noticed that midi and KB (with his bran noo nom de plume) are still about – fair play to them.
I'm not sure how much more of the A-League I can take
actually, this is the first time I’ve been here since you’ve had to register to get a gig ! Was perusing the changing landscape ( no Fuss, punter…?) and then suddenly ‘chris‘ !!! with the same axe to grind and style. I just had to proffer an old school response.
I'm not sure how much more of the A-League I can take
I only know you for the persistent and narrow argumentative style that you have invoked here for years – and years…
I also know you (well enough) to accept that my ‘rant’ could totally go over your head – so it’s all good (:
I'm not sure how much more of the A-League I can take
All major spectator sports have reached their pinnacle – it’s a world wide trend.

‘onya Chris ! All these years and still not giving an inch and looking straight ahead…
However,re. ‘your battle’, I feel like offering the advice that is given flailing and and confused goalkeepers about the ball…

Mick Malthouse seems to be now trying to caste himself as some sort of wise philosopher and sage. Recently he was criticizing the the AFL and Port Adelaide for their links to China and now this ! I think the situation can be best encapsulated by an adaptation of an old Chinese proverb that Mick himself is very keen on

Much rather have a draw than a blowout ! – any day…
After 81 days, we get the ultimate letdown
Totally agree ! Honestly, how many AFL games are decided by 1 contentious score ? Yes, yes I know this game was a draw but an AFL game is far more likely to end in a boring and tedious blowout than this sort of thing. The AFL would be well served in trying to curb this than worrying about one scoring attempt.
It's a draw! Season restart ends in low-scoring stalemate
Mate, I love Aussie rules and have for over 50 years. What I want is for it remain an attractive and popular option for generations to come. It’s amazing just how the tastes of younger people are changing – and fair play to that ! e.g my 35 year old son and ALL of his circle of friends care NOTHING about cricket and barely anything about Bradman. Most of them are physically fit, some fitness junkies but their interest in professional sports seems to start and end with the NBA !
The game is too long. Shorter quarters are here to stay
One option that I’ve been putting here over the years is. . . give the ball to the opposition after a goal has been scored via a kick in from the 50 meter circle. This could bring back into the game fullbacks with a booming kick and high marking straight kicking full forwards… To handle the situation where a team feels it is on a comeback roll, have a captains call where he can nominate that the game be restarted with the usual center bounce – 5 times a game ? 2 times a quarter? The point of all this is to counter the common problem in Aussie rules where a side can just drop their head for a few minutes. . . and the games is ALL OVER for everyone – BORING! This is especially a problem in lower comps.where the game is well and truly over by quarter time with 40 goals to 3 results…
The game is too long. Shorter quarters are here to stay
ANYTHING that reduces the number of BLOWOUTS I’m all for ! They are the biggest threat to and stain on the game ! Honestly how many ‘great’ i.e. close GFs do we get ?
The game is too long. Shorter quarters are here to stay
