Hey Geoff, it’s your boy Nick.
“The bigotry of low expectations”.
That’s a good phrase to see this AFLW love-in as.
Also, the general thrust of your argument can also be applied to the female Ghostbusters movie.
I really believe that was a cynical move by Sony (apart from the rehashing of an old movie) to market their movie not as art but some strong identity statement – you could either be with it or against it.
And when you say you’ve been a lifelong Tigers fan – I’m sure that Coke bottle’s been in your shed longer than you, a Kiwi, has been a Tiger’s fan!

A long time in sport: Reflecting on the best of the last three years
Thanks for writing this article – and taking the flak that comes with it apaway!
The AFL has, to their credit, a strangehold over the media and the media narrative. Pretty much every other sport has been backing women’s sports for years – even if that backing was reluctant and cynical – but it’s almost as if it didn’t happen before the AFL did it.
I’m no code warrior, but if the NRL did something like this (an NRLW), there wouldn’t nearly be the hype from the media as there is for AFLW in the NRL heartland.
What's so historic about the AFLW?
Don’t reply mate, it’s a long and unrewarding road when you’re talking to manchildren
What's so historic about the AFLW?
i thought code wars was an internet thing, I wouldn’t really expect soccer fans and cricket fans to get into a fight after that. Though I could see Thunder and Wanderers fans ganging up to take down the eastern Sydney yuppies
Why scheduling two Sydney derbies at once hurts fans
This is how I feel about all the palindrome and anagram references in this article

I picked that up on the first day of the Perth test. It’s never “Ian” or “Healy” it’s always IAN HEALY
Channel Nine commentators: A review of their summer thus far
Can we leave questions here? I want Mr Lemon to answer this: why are there so many NSW players in the team? I think I’m right in saying there’s 8 players from NSW, despite the state having 33% of the Australian pop. What’s going on?

Hehe, you ol’ scamp. First time I commented in 3 months, just keep to you on the straight and narrow
Michael Cheika - not the coach we want, but the coach we need
Hey RT you bloody idiot, my understanding is that Cheika negotiated for a more hands-off approach from the ARU. Thats why. You do your job, I’ll do mine
Michael Cheika - not the coach we want, but the coach we need
Ok everyone thats it!
The Chiefs manage to outfox the Crusaders in a game played in bad conditions. Lots of smart kicking and giving the ball away smartly, and waiting for the Crusaders to make mistakes, gave them the win. Saying that though, without McKenzie’s scything run for the Chiefs 2nd try, the scores would be almost level.
Chiefs go top of the ladder, at least until the Lions play the Sharks tomorrow.
Thanks for joining everyone, and educating me about humidity.
Bye!

Peep! That’s it, McKenzie seals the win for the Chiefs.

Ruh-roh. The Crusaders get themselves in all sorts of trouble, and get pinged for holding onto the ball.
McKenzie’s shaping up to kick. This will be the last kick of the game, and if he gets it, no BP for the Crusaders.

It’s all very tense at the moment. Big defence from the Crusaders trying to keep the Chiefs big boppers from crashing over the line.
The ball is lost by the Chiefs though, and the ref rules that its not coming out of the stacks on.

After snatching it, Nadolo is tasked with clearing with a kick, but it’s charged down.
So, Chiefs scrum 5m out.

Pretty frustrating if youre a Crusaders fan – the Chiefs have just won a penalty after an offside Crusader forward got in the way of the scrum halfs pass.
The Chiefs have a lineout now only 5m out – but whats this? The Crusaders snatch it!

An offside has given the Crusaders an opportunity at 3 points.
With only a few minutes to go, it looks like they’re going for the loss BP

Wainui and Brown are coming on now. The graphic on the telly sorta failed so I cant say who for or where.
After some more butterfingers and tactical kicking, it’s now a Crusaders lineout on teh Chiefs 22.

The ball somehow slips out of the rolling maul and the Chiefs have the whole field in front of them to counter attack, but a covering tackle results in a knock on. So, Crusaders saved and its their scrum just inside the Chiefs half.

The lineout is called for being wonky, but then the assistant ref tells Big Boss that it was actually obstruction. So the Crusdaers get another lineout and then..

An exciting attack from the Chiefs almost leads to a try but it’s been knocked on. Now it’s a lineout in the last quarter of the Chiefs.

I can’t speak to AFL, but definitely women’s rugby is far more athletic and technical because women can’t really on their strength as much as the men.
Definitely, the Aussie women’s sevens team have amazing passing technique that is up there with the men. But then again, they might be able to maintain their technique throughout a game as their stamina isn’t as worn down by tackles and the like as much as the men.
You do raise a good point about the “if they could kick 20m further would it be better” – footballers are generally better everywhere now because of professionalism and sport science, but i think in AFL it’s particularly striking because, apart from finals, there’s no relative difference because AFL has no other league or rep competitions to compare itself too.
