A Geelong supporter watching with sadness from abroad as the GFC is shredded by the joint ego's of Chris Scott and Brian Cook. Cook has been great for the club but it's time for change at the GFC. I live by the following quote 'One of the symptoms of approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important, and that to take a holiday would bring all kinds of disaster. If I were a medical man, I should prescribe a holiday to any patient who considered his or her work important.'- Bertrand Russell

I agree we’re helped disproportionately by the umpires every week mainly based on the names we have around the ball and Joel Selwood’s ducking frees. When Menzel was playing he got a lot of frees too by diving and playing for them. Still it’s fairly irrelevant to most results.
Richmond's win over Geelong was a win for football
I wouldn’t have thought any of them except maybe Sydney are genuinely in the hunt for the flag this year either.
Richmond's win over Geelong was a win for football
Yep, because the Bombers are right up there. Our problem is facing any team with real pace on the MCG. We beat both Melbourne and Collingwood there because they aren’t super quick teams. Unfortunately people like yourself aren’t capable of no.1 – in any way being objective and no. 2 understanding the trends of the game. Modern footy at the elite premiership competing level is all about pace and fast skillful dynamic mid/small size forwards. Geelong has neither of those components due to poor list management that focuses on winning at GMHBA at the expense of truly competing in finals at the MCG.
Richmond's win over Geelong was a win for football
I disagree completely. With the footy they play Geelong are no hope of the flag this year or anytime soon. Richmond were a 6 goal better side than Geelong on the weekend and it was only poor kicking early and a few crucial fumbles in the wet when Richmond were clearly out on their way to goal that ended up providing such a flattering margin to Geelong. You can’t go from winning 3 finals from 11 in 6 years, only scoring 100 points or more in 3 of your last 22 games at the ‘G’ and having a 48% winning record on the MCG over the last 27 games to winning the flag with basically the exact same defensive game style. It would defy all logic and reason.
Richmond's win over Geelong was a win for football
I never argued every team should play the same style of football. My argument was I’m glad the attacking flowing style of play beat the dour lockdown style. The other sub-argument I was making was if Geelong have now got only a 48% winning record at the MCG over the last 27 games then maybe it is time to stop playing so negatively at the MCG as it clearly isn’t working.
Richmond's win over Geelong was a win for football
They’ll most likely be 7th once all teams have played the equal amount of games at the end of next round. I wouldn’t think 6/7th after 13 games for a team many had as a premiership favourite is a decent result? Especially for a team that has had Ablett, Selwood, and Dngerfield playing together for the majority of its season so far.

‘Maybe Geelong play that way because that’s the sort of list they’ve got. Presumably that’s all Chris Scott’s fault too? As if Brian Cook and Stephen Wells aren’t real people?’ I’ve already written in more detail about Geelong’s list management in past articles where I’ve given a fair whack to Brian Cook who’s ultimately responsible for our topping up list management strategy. Chris Scott however controls how the team plays and at the MCG the record shows quite clearly Geelong take a hyper defensive approach that fails more than succeeds.
Richmond's win over Geelong was a win for football
Geelong’s winning record over it’s last 27 games at the MCG is just 48% – compare that with GMHBA which sits at over 80% and I think there’s a fair case to be made when saying Geelong are “hopelessly exposed again and again on the majestic wings of the MCG, where attacking flair and speed rule.”
Richmond's win over Geelong was a win for football
Scott’s Geelong has the best defense in the league and it comes about through Geelong playing the most defensive boring footy in the league. Geelong are playing a big part in the ugliness of the game. Name me the last great game to watch that was played at GMHBA stadium? I can’t remember one it’s been that long. As a Brisbane supporter surely you’re happy with the fact that your young team is learning to play the right way ie. attacking fast flowing footy? Geelong have Ablett, Selwood, Dangerfield, Mitch Duncan, and Kelly in their midfield yet set up to play like they’ve got a dour working class midfield resembling the Saints?

Well said Leighton. You should’ve written the article. 😉
A one-man MRP will be a huge mistake
I actually stated in the article it would probably work well at first as these types of systems tend to early on…
A one-man MRP will be a huge mistake
It’s not about him. You give anybody that type of power and history shows they’ll very quickly become inconsistent in their ‘rulings.’ It’s not Christian it’s the process that won’t work no matter who’s put there.
A one-man MRP will be a huge mistake
Yes Christian may say that but the quote from Hocking in my piece pretty much completely contradicts that.
A one-man MRP will be a huge mistake
Nothing to do with that Cat. I’m against the inherent tyranny the new system has woven through it. Absolutely nothing to do with Steven Hocking.
A one-man MRP will be a huge mistake
Well said Barb. You can definitely see there’s holes both in the makeup of the side and the cohesion between coach and players.
The face palm before the storm: Geelong's 2018 season preview
Go for it! Have yourself 8 losing finals of 11 in 6 years. I’m sure most other Brisbane supporters aren’t hoping your young list evolves in to finals chokers like that – but hey whatever floats your boat.
The face palm before the storm: Geelong's 2018 season preview
I don’t want sympathy I want Geelong to perform when it counts and if it doesn’t then have swift consequences for those that led to the lack of performance. I’m sure if your team went on a mature recruit bender securing the best player in the league and throwing away first round/second round draft picks like they were confetti at a wedding you’d expect results too. Geelong’s entire club strategy and list management strategy has been about supposedly securing a premiership – well where is it? Where is a Grand Final even? Hell, where are winning finals? One qualifying final and two semi-final victories from 11 finals during 6 years of this strategy…It’s been a complete failure to this point.

Thanks Cat you’re great. It must be hard for you feeling compelled to read my articles just to bag them vacuously in the comments section while providing no valid insight or intelligent critique. Or maybe it’s just difficult for you to read the screen with your giant official GFC goggle covering your eye.

Paul D I’m glad you were laughing. Whatever reaction my writing gets I’m happy it’s at least getting any reaction at all. My club hasn’t been going well the past few years when it counts! In fact it’s been pretty pathetic in that area. Expectations obviously differ depending on where a team is at. Geelong have built a list to supposedly win a flag and have even finished 2nd over the last two seasons to again give themselves a good chance but have consistently failed hopelessly in finals. Considering those outcomes the club deserves scrutiny especially given our precarious list demographics and the high likely hood of us falling off a cliff over the next 24/36 months.

Just want to make it clear the ‘Tim’ Cook mistake at the beginning of the piece was an unfortunate editing mistake and not of my doing. I do know the CEO of Geelong is named Brian Cook. Thanks.

Nice article Ryan with a good statistical breakdown but what yourself and others seem to ignore is the giant elephant in the room. Speed across almost the entirety of Richmond’s team is what allows them to so regularly and quickly outnumber their opposition at the contest and also allows them to so swiftly break with handball from stoppages. There combined speed also allows them to set up their formations or recover them far more quickly than every other AFL side. Until AFL coaching staff understand the importance of smaller speedier more athletic forward lines, midfields, and defences they’ll continue to fail against Richmond. The Tiges will win the flag again this season because of the strange conservatism I see in footy coaching staff that refuse to accept Richmond’s completely changed the game and still blindly believe in traditional set ups.
Adelaide were exposed in the grand final. Their response will define 2018
Really Cat? You should’ve learnt by now not to throw stones in glass houses. Also give me one example of a cheap swipe I’ve done on here?
Pride and petulance: Chris Scott's critique of the 2017 Richmond flag
Great comment HTH. Unfortunately most Geelong supporters don’t want to face reality.
Pride and petulance: Chris Scott's critique of the 2017 Richmond flag
I think playing at GMHBA is terrible for footy because of the grounds dimensions. It also greatly restricts access of lower socio-economic Geelong supporters and opposition supporters. At least at the MCG a Cats fan can get a seat for 25 bucks. GMHBA stadium is the perfect example of how Geelong has become an elitist club that doesn’t value it’s working class supporters at all and if anything actively attempts to exclude them.
