100% support Tim on this. When I heard the headline, my first thought was what has Jeff Kennett done now? Then I read the article and spent the day being horrified. I can’t see how they can coach again. And they shouldn’t be the only two that go. This can’t be just one bad apple. This was systemic and calculated. A lot of people were active participants or turned a blind eye. Surely questions have to be asked of Luke Beverage, Brendon Bolton and all the other ex-Hawthorn assistant coaches.

And the AFL integrity unit has been shown up as a farce. This is the tip of the ice-berg.

North Melbourne and Brisbane must sack Clarkson and Fagan after Hawthorn racism revelations

😂 😂 😂 What a cracker!

Glorious vision of Anthony Rocca kicking a casual 65-metre drop punt goal

I accept that I’m a bit biased as a rabid Lions fan, but it seemed to me that the Power’s defence really struggled with Brisbane’s 3-tall forward setup. It’s not too hard to see them getting smashed up by Cameron, Himmelberg and Finlayson this weekend. If they can get on top of, then yes – genuine contenders without a doubt.

Granted, 3 tall forwards is old-school and very few teams use that style anymore. But I’d be worried if it happened two weekends in a row.

Port's doubters could not be more wrong

So glad I hopped on Lachie Neale to win the Brownlow when he was $9.00 on. He’s now at $3.00!

Six talking points from AFL Round 5

Not really a comment for the writer but for the editors. Why is racist in quote marks in the headlines?

You’re implying that is up for debate or that there is too sides to the story. I know white people get all uppity about being called racist, particularly when it comes to casual racism.

But called it what it is.

Aussie cricketers in hot water over "racist" social media posts

I’m sure those Hawthorn Premierships don’t hurt either.

Can’t agree more, TomC

Lachie Neale, or a Lion King? Either way, Brisbane wins

Always awesome talking about Fremantle on an article about the Lions. But I digress…

The Lions chasing a King doesn’t make sense to me. How many Key positions players in development does a club need?
Best 22 – Hipwood, Andrews, McStay, Andrews
Forwards in Development – Ballenden, Wooller, Fullerton
Backs in Development – Payne, Skinner,
Plus Jack Frost and Matt Eagles

Surely if we don’t trade out big 4 it’s Bailey Smith? A mid who can start straight away rather than someone who spend half a season in the NEAFL.

Lachie Neale, or a Lion King? Either way, Brisbane wins

Not worth it this year. You can only draft 6 players a year, so all those extra picks are worth nothing unless they are on traded. In this year’s draft there’s a couple of good father-sons – Blakely, West – and Thomas as an NGA, but no one has multiple academy players that they need to stockpile picks for. Two years, yes and they could have on-traded those picks to Brisbane or GC,but no one needs them this year,

Scattergun signings and 'safe bet' drafting will get St Kilda nowhere

That’s what I took away as well.

However, Brisbane got rid of 3 talls last year and still has an over-supply. They only have one tall, Archie Smith a ruckman, whose contract is up this year. So not only would Lynch be their highest paid player by a fair whack, but they would also be paying for at least 2 more unplayable, untradable talls as well.

Plus, it would completely destroy the Suns. Propping up one ailing team at the expense of the other doesn’t seem like something the AFL would do, unless they are seriously considering closing down the Suns.

Here's where Tom Lynch will play in 2019

Simple. No teams north of the Murray are allowed to win the flag again.

Why Lions fans deserve to be optimistic

I think Mick is as excited and enthusiastic about 2018 as I am.

I’m living in Sydney again (as I was in the Three-Peat era) but everything I hear from friends back home is overwhelmingly positive and the change in vibe is quite evident apparently.

Part of me is scared that I’m drinking too much of the Kool-Aid and it’s all a facade.

But with 47 days to go, I’m going to stick to being excited!

Why Lions fans deserve to be optimistic

I’d suspect Berry will play a bit closer to the action and Mayes will be probably be squeezed out. I don’t think we can afford to have four distributors in the back 6 – Hodge, Rich, Witherden, Mayes – so that means Gardiner will probably have to come in there. I don’t rate him that highly but none of those other four are proper defenders and if the trend is to more small forwards, we will need someone to mark at least one of small forward.

Bell and Cutler will also struggle to get games. There are a number of kids who have gone pass them, so those two will really have to pick up their game.

Cornwill's 2018 season previews: Brisbane Lions

I think what’s more important than the hard/easy draw is where you play those teams.

To take Brisbane as an example, which by finishing bottom has an ‘easy’ draw. There are teams which Brisbane will have a chance of winning against – Gold Coast, Carlton, Fremantle, North Melbourne. Basically the other bottom teams. Also teams that they stand no chance of winning against – Sydney, GWS (actually that list is quite long..).

Then there is other teams in the middle – Bulldogs, Essendon, Collingwood – who they were competitive last year and almost won games against those sides (they did beat Essendon in one game).

The five teams Brisbane play twice are Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Collingwood, Hawthorn and GWS. Two bottom teams, a middle team and a top team. Everything being equal, and working on the assumption that there isn’t a lot separating the bottom teams, Brisbane should be able win both games against Gold Coast and North Melbourne. The two games against GWS are a write off. But having a home game against a middle side like Collingwood (who over performed slightly) could now bring that game into play as a possible win. That’s 5 wins which is what the Pythagorean ladder is suggesting.

The other bottom teams Brisbane play are Carlton at home and Fremantle away, which should cancel each other out.

Sticking with this group, Collingwood would be looking to the 6 games against Brisbane, Gold Coast and North as all very winnable, which is then only 4 wins of their prediction.

Carlton and Fremantle also ended up in the same group so we avoid a situation like last year where three out of the bottom 5 had harder draws than the other two. All bottom five teams have the two easier draws which suggest that at least one team should climb out of the bottom five – partly because of their easier draw and having more potential winnable home games. But partly because someone else will fall because they are in the harder group which means a top team has two opportunities to beat up on them.

Numbers game: Which AFL teams should rise and fall in 2018?

They’d have to keep the WACA going. My understanding is cricket is moving into the new stadium which will be being using by West Coast and Fremantle in June.

But it could be good for one last fling…

Australia set for Tests against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh next year

Funding is approved for all parts of the new facility except for the new the boutique stadium which is $15mil short. The state government is only party who hasn’t come on board just yet so that’s the holdup. There is no government at the moment so not going to get announced anytime soon. Most likely in the leadup to the next budget in May

Best 22 analysis: Brisbane

I’d be shocked if the Lions go with only one tall forward. That’s actually one of their few strengths. And Josh Walker finished the season really strongly. If he comes through pre-season in the form he finished last season, he’ll start round 1 which would give time for Ballenden to get used to senior footy and Skinner to heal again.

Like others, I don’t understand McStay moving forward. He began to look settled in the last few games and building a partnership with Andrews. He can only benefit from having Hodge beside him. Unless they plan to swap him with Walker (who did play a lot of NEAFL down back last year).

Best 22 analysis: Brisbane

Jack Payne is a Brisbane Lions Academy Player. As are Jack Clayton and Campbell Walker.

2017 AFL Draft FAQ: Everything you need to know

Mostly for the lols, but I’m plumping for Harry Kewell.

Who are the contenders to replace Ange Postecoglou?

Bancroft and Renshaw remind me of Hayden and Slater. Slater got the jump after Hayden faltered a few times. Then after a sustained period of success for Slater, Hayden came back better than ever.

Cameron Bancroft has the all-round skill to be Australia's next great Test batsman

Not getting out for a duck would count for success for Marsh at this stage.

Cameron Bancroft has the all-round skill to be Australia's next great Test batsman

Short-term disaster for Australian Football.

He’s clearly not going back to the A-League so does he take the money on offer in China or work his way through the European leagues?

Ange Postecoglou quits as Socceroos boss

Yes, but will they play 200 games at the Lions. That’s the real dilemma.

Who will the Brisbane Lions take with pick 1 in the 2017 AFL Draft?

If you take the most generous definition of Queenslander, there were 7 in the 2001 Grand final 22. Three of them – Notting, Black and Brad Scott were drafted/recruited from interstate clubs.

Who will the Brisbane Lions take with pick 1 in the 2017 AFL Draft?

What a joke. I’m ok with Bancroft although Renshew can feel that he deserve another chance.

I’m a big Tim Paine fan but it is a bit unfair. Having said these three games are a play-off, to pick someone who only play one game is contradictatory. Although he is an excellent keeper and batter and will do a good job.

But Shaun Marsh? That’s just a cruel joke on the Australian public. How many chances does this mediocre talent get? There is no justifiable criteria that he deserves his spot. There are 5 non-test players who have scored more runs and have better averages than him this year. And it’s not like Maxwell has failed this year. He has been solid without been spectacular.

If Smith doesn’t trust Maxwell, well that’s fair enough (not really but understandable). But what is it about Marsh that anyone thinks he would be better than any one of the 5 much superior options?

It's official: Paine, Marsh and Bancroft bolt into Australia's Ashes squad
