Fat old halfback, Tahs fan

Great article, I love all the nicknames. I have never understood how much negativity there is in the Australian rugby community. It isn’t even a new thing, many posters here can’t even watch a clip of Campo ripping through the All Blacks without some snarky comments.

Enough of realistic expectations, let's get excited about future Wallabies

The laws have changed, even if you kick the conversion before the review is finished the try (and kick) can now still be disallowed. Trying to game the system by a quick kick when you know it wasn’t a fair try is very un-rugby.

'Last few years have been hell': Iceman 2.0 Harrison gets 'dream come true' in Tahs' stunning golden point win

Yeah I’d like to see Lolesio at 10 and Carter at 12, two 5/8s NZ style.

Five things we learned: One area Gordon must fix to convince Wallabies boss, ABs bruiser should be on notice

I thought the ref said “Just a shove, not a tackle” rather than “just a shoulder”

'Insane and total stupidity': Drua have two SENT OFF as Rebels score 33 unanswered points to win again

Should be a great tournament, every rugby fan should go to the Hong Kong 7s at least once.
Good to see Longbottom back and will be very interesting to see how Hooper goes. France look very good with Dupont and I expect a big tournament from the Argies.
The women’s comp is really getting competitive, a few years ago it was mostly Aust and NZ and while those two sides are again the favourites having a British team and the quality of France, Ireland, Canada, and Fiji it will be great. Of course Australia with Caslick, Ashby, Williams, and the Levis will always be a chance.

Countdown to Hong Kong SVNS: Hoops in, Lefau-Fakosilea still out, Terita back...and hopefully no more red cards

I’m sorry but this article is so predictable and somewhat bias and lame — every time a favoured player gets hurt or carded there are calls that the game is too violent to be controlled or is going soft. Rugby has shown it can control excessive violence, as mentioned in the article spear tackles are much rarer now, as are shoulder charges (SBW style, which were legal), and raking of players on the ground. Of course change isn’t quick but Rugby has successfully curbed excessively dangerous play before without diminishing the physical contest and, in all likelihood, will again.

There are only two ways rugby can go from here - and there's no middle ground between physicality and safety

Well, overall Reds scrum is the equal third best in the comp (82%) at the moment according to https://super.rugby/superrugby/competition-stats/ so he can’t be doing too bad

'Breathing life back into Australian rugby': How Reds revolution can supercharge several Wallaby careers

I was worried about the Reds scrum without Tupou but Zane N has really developed, and getting a tough old (well 32) kiwi prop (JT-A) to play the last 20 has been great, maybe the recruitment of the season so far.

Always seems to me that to keep Mackenzie quiet requires great discipline both at the kick chase and in keeping a connected defensive line — the Reds did both.

Ferret — maybe play Ryan Lonergan at halfback since he can do the kicking

Five things we learned: The general who caught Schmidt's eye, why next week is vital for Coleman's Tahs

Well didn’t Jake Gordon prove me wrong for calling him to be benched — back to his best, great leadership.

'No one backed us': $8 outsiders Waratahs upset Crusaders AGAIN as Edmed steps up to deliver famous win

Big step up for the Tahs especially the desperation in defence, the defensive lineouts and, kicking out of hand. Edmed made some good accurate kicks but I was also impressed by the length of kick from Walton and Jorgenson, Tahs need to keep these kicking options in mind as it keeps the defence guessing and takes pressure of the fly half. Even Gleeson put in a good kick.

For the Reds has Petaia ever been tried at inside-centre? He has the size to play the Kerevi / Danty crash ball roll more that Hunter P. I acknowledge he can throw some very unwise passes but that often seems an act of desperation in the wide channels when he has been isolated (yes becuase he tends to run away from support), in close there is more likely to be a team mate about especially Fraser McR and McDermot. Might be worth a try since the Reds have Campbell at the back.

Super Rugby teams: Marky clear for Crusaders clash, Blues rest two All Blacks after just ONE week, DMac to face Brumbies

For the Tahs I think the time has come for Teddy Wilson to start ahead of Jake Gordon (maybe make Holloway or Bell captain). Jake has been a great servant of the Tahs and held them together in some dark days but seems to slow to the breakdown and to content to just kick and hope, a tactic that was never his strongest. Game seemed much faster when Wilson came on but it was late and maybe Reds had slackened off a bit, time to seem what he can do as a starter over the next few very tough games.

Hoy, your “don’t panic” comment is spot on — Ireland seem to have more faith in their system and their teammates than any other side

ANALYSIS: How the Reds’ ruck system outshone their razzle dazzle - and why they must nail it against Canes

My best 3 Aussie players from the weekend were:
Leota — in a well beaten side he (along with Kellaway) was highlight, plenty or runs and tackles and some good linking work
Harry Wilson — broke the line, good offloads, chased and tackled all day (yes the rest of the Reds backrow were good too)
Nick Frost — best of the round, broke the Rebels lineout, yes there were some poor throws but it was Frost’s pressure that caused the yips, he put in plenty of ruck work and a few carries
Interesting to look at the halfbacks, Lonergan and McDermot both played well but still lack a zip pass (check out Jameison-Park for Ireland over the weekend). I think Tahs should start with Wilson, Jake Gordon looks too concerned with the ref and the rest of the team and too ready to make a poor kick.

Five things we learned: Aussies given early Super Rugby warning, Lolesio's timely reminder

Tough tournaments for both teams. The men looked quite flat, hopefully the addition of Hooper will spark the team. The women were again in with a good chance but France have been charging. Congrats to Caslick on her 50th tournament.

France, Canada stun Aussie women in Vancouver despite Levi heroics, Dupont shines on debut in Olympics statement

I think they will often run 6 player lineouts with Gleeson standing between 10 and 12

Super Rugby teams round 1: Fresh Rodda blow, Tahs forced into backline move after Foketi drama

Happy with the Tahs side. FLW’s addition strengthens the lineout and allows Hollaway to play at lock which is a more natural slot for him, looking forward to seeing young Amatosero. Joey Walton at fullback is a bit of a surprise.

Great for Aussies to make both finals but a pity about the eventual results — congrats to Ireland and Argentina both played really well. Both Aussie teams need to work on their kick-offs on both sides of the ball.

Double disappointment: Aussie men and women go down in Perth Sevens finals as Ireland snap hoodoo

On tv the head to head clash was pretty clear and at real speed there was a significant amount of force, unfortunate but T Levi had time to dip. The team really dug in and I was exhausted sitting on the couch.

'We should be the Aussie sixes': the huge problem sevens team must fix before Olympics as Levi joins sister after ban

Yeah Bobby that call v Wales should mean he never gets (c) after his name ever again, even though he is probably first choice 2.

Yeah WhoDis proofreading is needed although in this case such a Freudian slip is understandable

Glad to see Mehrtens on the list, I think he is the best tactical kicker of the last 50 years. I hated him when he played against Wallabies/Waratahs because he would turn them around and pin them in the corners time and time again — glad the 50:22 rule didn’t exist when he played.

Hipwell deserves his place as an all time great. For those to young to have seen him play the closest modern player is Aaron Smith. My favourite, and probably fake Hipwell story is about his first prep for a game with Mark Ella. Supposably Hipwell asked Ella whether he wanted the ball laces up or laces down and Ella replied ‘you throw and I’ll catch it’ and so the Wallabies have a Grand Slam tour. Thanks for the article.

Brave, highly skilled and well-respected: John Hipwell was the quintessential rugby halfback
