Of the VFL recruits I’d be looking at Steve Clifton [GWS $130,000], Sam Gibson [Nth Melb] 94,000 and Orren Stephenson [Geelong $103,000]. These guys are ready to play, Clifton is a must as he should get plenty of opportunity with GWS.
Ahmed Saad [StKilda $124,000] should make his debut and can play but not sure he will score loads of points playing as a small forward.

Selectors get it wrong with Warner call, again
Channel 9 didn’t pick it up even though the graphics at the bottom of the screen clearly indicated that only 5 balls had been bowled. This comes on the back of a recent 7 ball over in this tournament, bad umpiring at this level.

David, agree with sentiment that Warner should be captain but can’t possibly agree that Trevor Hohns was an ordinary selector. He led the panel that made the decision to dump Ian Healy for Adam Gilchrist, Gilchrist was booed by sections of the crowd as he made his way out to bat in his first test, of course he made a ‘lazy’ 149 not out, after coming in at 5/126 chasing 369 to win! Healy wanted a farewell game at the Gabba and was denied by the selectors, which was a tough but correct decision.
Hohns involvement with Queensland has also coincided with the improvement of leg spinner Cameron Boyce who has taken 19 wickets at 30.

Certainly the presence of internationals in the Melbourne Cup has increased the depth of that race so i’d rate Makybe Diva carrying 9.0kg over the limit as pretty special. How many horses would win on a normal Saturday with 63kg on a 54kg limit?
Black Caviar won the Newmarket with 58kg carrying 8kg above the limit beating a Golden Slipper winner; albeit a 3yo filly, who was on the limit. For mine this was her best win and the race that took the most out of her.

First goal markets are framed at around 180% and are aimed at punting novices and mugs! The hold on this type of bet is a small fraction of what is bet on AFL and the bookies scream blue murder when they get done over for 40,000 because they aren’t supposed to lose on novelty bets.
The type of punter that gambles on first goalkicker isn’t going to bet with an online bookie or underground operator so the sensible thing for the AFL is not to sanction this type of gambling on its sport. Sure some corporates will offer the bet type but the big players won’t and it will make it virtually unacessible for the ‘mums and dads’ punters.

Replacing Warne was always going to be a forlorn task; Bill O’Reilly, Ritchie Benaud and Shane Warne were all about 30 years apart.
If its any consolation the current Australian side is light years ahead of the side of the mid 80’s when Australia didn’t win a series between January 1984 and December 1987.

Agree that Harris will be picked and so he should be as when fit he is one of our best. A tough call needs to be made on Ponting, a legend of the game, but he has had time to retire and hasn’t made the decision so the selectors need to make it for him.

Yeah he has withdrawn from the big bash and has been selected to play in one of the three day warm up games against India. So do we take it that he is still very much a chance to retain his place in the test side.
As an aside Shane Watson was asked by television journalists what he thought about the ‘Batting Camp’ in Melbourne and didn’t know a thing about it, so I’d presume this has been hastily arranged.
Big Bash League will be good for Hughes
I think the BBL is a sign that Cricket Australia has accepted that the football codes have gone ahead on and off the field.
If 20/20 entices more gifted junior sportsmen to choose cricket over the football codes then cricket is the winner.
I do however think having two teams in Melbourne and Sydney is a mistake. In future I’d like to see two teams from New Zealand.

True Jason my mistake; Hughes made 0 & 75 on debut. In the second test he made 115 & 160. i’d still argue that South Africa should have held no fears for Hughes.
