True Jason my mistake; Hughes made 0 & 75 on debut. In the second test he made 115 & 160. i’d still argue that South Africa should have held no fears for Hughes.

Mantra of high performance not extending to selectors

“Now things get tricky. Previously, the team has never really had any great expectations placed on it. But for a club many feel will be challenging for flags in the not too distant future, that was never going to last.

Already, one member of the media has proclaimed that a doubling of the win tally should be the expectation this year”.

It will be a miracle for the Suns to win 6 games in 2012. I wasn’t disappointed with the win/loss ratio in 2011 but did expect them to be more competitive.

2012 AFL season preview: Gold Coast Suns

Only really good horses win a Group 1 handicap carrying 58.5kg. And with Buffering running second it enhanced the Black Caviar form.

How should Hay List be remembered?

Television has played a big role in bringing ‘foreign’ sports to new audiences.20 years ago rugby league was scorned by most Victorians, though many have embraced the Melbourne Storm. To the detrement of the game the NSW centric administration hasn’t done enough to grow the game in Victoria.

1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a code war

Kernahan did say in an interview with “One week at a time” last season that they were $8 million in debt which is the major reason they were so keen to bludgeon the Northern Bullants out of existence. With the ‘help’ of AFL Victoria and Darebin council, Carlton now a stand alone VFL side.

Carlton Blues 2012 season preview

Border averaged 38 on that tour, of the batsmen only Mark Taylor 24,25 averaged less.

Ponting dropped from One Dayers

Davis scored 66 more in one innings than NSW did in two innings!

Looks like Haddin has played his last test, Wade left Tassie to avoid playing second fiddle to Tim Paine, Paine gets injured in a nothing 20/20 match and gets overtaken by Wade. Who’d want to be a wicketkeeper.

Haddin fails as WA smash NSW at WACA

Carlton could be the surprise sliders. Still rely alot on Judd to win close games and are at least 1/2 key position players away from being a serious threat for the flag.

Which AFL teams won't feature in 2012 finals action

Of the VFL recruits I’d be looking at Steve Clifton [GWS $130,000], Sam Gibson [Nth Melb] 94,000 and Orren Stephenson [Geelong $103,000]. These guys are ready to play, Clifton is a must as he should get plenty of opportunity with GWS.

Ahmed Saad [StKilda $124,000] should make his debut and can play but not sure he will score loads of points playing as a small forward.

The delicate balancing act of Supercoach

I’d presume they will review points/out of bounds decisions as well which could lead on average 4-5 decsions per match being reviewed.

Video scoring could come to AFL this year

Sorry it should have said in his second test, my mistake

Selectors get it wrong with Warner call, again

Channel 9 didn’t pick it up even though the graphics at the bottom of the screen clearly indicated that only 5 balls had been bowled. This comes on the back of a recent 7 ball over in this tournament, bad umpiring at this level.

Extraordinary case of the 'missing ball' blunder

David, agree with sentiment that Warner should be captain but can’t possibly agree that Trevor Hohns was an ordinary selector. He led the panel that made the decision to dump Ian Healy for Adam Gilchrist, Gilchrist was booed by sections of the crowd as he made his way out to bat in his first test, of course he made a ‘lazy’ 149 not out, after coming in at 5/126 chasing 369 to win! Healy wanted a farewell game at the Gabba and was denied by the selectors, which was a tough but correct decision.

Hohns involvement with Queensland has also coincided with the improvement of leg spinner Cameron Boyce who has taken 19 wickets at 30.

Selectors get it wrong with Warner call, again

Live Friday footy is certainly a winner, only criticism of the AFL rights deal is that the NAB Cup should have been 2/7 spilt between 7 and Fox.

AFL ups the ante in the television battle

Training, feeding and breeding regimes may have increased the quality between top and bottom. Certainly the presence of internationals in the Melbourne Cup has increased the depth of that race so i’d rate Makybe Diva carrying 9.0kg over the limit as pretty special. How many horses would win on a normal Saturday with 63kg on a 54kg limit?

Black Caviar won the Newmarket with 58kg carrying 8kg above the limit beating a Golden Slipper winner; albeit a 3yo filly, who was on the limit. For mine this was her best win and the race that took the most out of her.

Black Caviar needs a heavyweight bout with Frankel

In previous seasons Foxtel and AFL free to air rights holders have split the coverage.

NAB Cup banished from free to air

Warner is due for the weekend off, he looked jaded in the field and is one of the few playing all three forms of the game.

Australia lose but Forrest stands out from the trees

Xaiver Doherty was man of the match for mine, he is a fine limited overs bowlers and Clint McKay’s slower ball bamboolzed Matthews.

With 5 one day games to be played against England later this year I wonder if Nathan Lyon will get an opportunity in English conditions or will the selectors treat it as just another one day series.

Mathews heroics almost shakes Clarke's resolve

Been some great catches in 20/20 games, several by Stephen Smith of NSW but none as good as this.

However I’m going to be a spoil sport and say that it looks like he tapped the ball back from over the rope and it should be six whether the fieldsman hits the ground with ball in hand or not.

Kiwis Small and Mason take incredible catch

Dernbach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Once upon a time Warnie would have said can’t bowl, can’t field!

Big Bash League live scores, blog: Brisbane Heat vs Melbourne Stars

First goal markets are framed at around 180% and are aimed at punting novices and mugs! The hold on this type of bet is a small fraction of what is bet on AFL and the bookies scream blue murder when they get done over for 40,000 because they aren’t supposed to lose on novelty bets.

The type of punter that gambles on first goalkicker isn’t going to bet with an online bookie or underground operator so the sensible thing for the AFL is not to sanction this type of gambling on its sport. Sure some corporates will offer the bet type but the big players won’t and it will make it virtually unacessible for the ‘mums and dads’ punters.

Dont bet on the AFL to stop Bock

Lose champion players and of course there is a transition. What made Australia almost unbeatable was having Warne and Gilchrist in the one side, with Gilchrist Australia could be 5/150 and still be expected to make 400. Replacing Warne was always going to be a forlorn task; Bill O’Reilly, Ritchie Benaud and Shane Warne were all about 30 years apart.

If its any consolation the current Australian side is light years ahead of the side of the mid 80’s when Australia didn’t win a series between January 1984 and December 1987.

Is being in a transitional phase really an excuse?

Given that Hughes has withdrawn from the Big Bash and will play in one of the three day warm up games against India, is this a sign that he is still in the mix for boxing day?

Agree that Harris will be picked and so he should be as when fit he is one of our best. A tough call needs to be made on Ponting, a legend of the game, but he has had time to retire and hasn’t made the decision so the selectors need to make it for him.

This is the Australian line-up we need for the first Indian Test

Yeah he has withdrawn from the big bash and has been selected to play in one of the three day warm up games against India. So do we take it that he is still very much a chance to retain his place in the test side.

As an aside Shane Watson was asked by television journalists what he thought about the ‘Batting Camp’ in Melbourne and didn’t know a thing about it, so I’d presume this has been hastily arranged.

Big Bash League will be good for Hughes

I think the BBL is a sign that Cricket Australia has accepted that the football codes have gone ahead on and off the field.
If 20/20 entices more gifted junior sportsmen to choose cricket over the football codes then cricket is the winner.

I do however think having two teams in Melbourne and Sydney is a mistake. In future I’d like to see two teams from New Zealand.

Sheffield Shield shunted to the sidelines
