I don’t really agree with Ange that we have always had defensive solidity. Maybe back in the day when numbers behind the ball and physicality were enough.
Defending isn’t easy these days and we still went forward under Bert. Behich seemed to spend most of the game in our opponents half and getting involved (he was great).

I think Ange is a good un, but he’s one man working at the top of the Pyramid.

What the national team manager does or doesn’t do doesn’t define us 100%. There’s more to our football than that and while everyone would feel great if we got to the 2nd round it wouldn’t make our major problem go away.

We are not producing many top tier players. They can chase all the business metrics they want but if we don’t keep up with other countries there will be a crash.

Football in Australia is in desperate need of change

Agree.
The intellectual dishonesty really annoyed me.

I felt my intelligence was being insulted that this was passed off as objective.

An exhaustive search to discover the point of Robbie Kruse

Didn’t read it all, yet I’m still commentating.

I got to the first piece of analysis where I remembered the play in question. Leckie’s pass to Kruise. The author says Kruise should have hit it first time even though it was played behind him.
Stopped reading right there. This was unrealistic and unfair.

That 97 qualifier against NZ was the first time I saw the Socceroos live. I only got to go because the game was moved because of the weather.

I don’t remember the crowd being that big so it’s a little surreal to be reading about it 20 years on.

What a shame the “celery” chant hasn’t survived. (I remember a small cluster of fans in fluro outfits holding up celery during the game).

Ecstasy, agony, heartbreak and hope: Whatever happens at the World Cup, Australian fans have been there before

Hyundai are a full time sponsor of football, I don’t mind them using this chance to try and reach a different crowd and getting more bang for their buck.

Have a fling with football? We already watch it every day

That loss to NZ was a really dark time. I think it wasn’t just the inability to afford flights, the accomadation had issues too.

After having such a good time at the last confederation cup it was a real kick in the guts.

Beating France and Brazil? Australia did both in 2001

This is definitely the goal that had the most impact on my life.
Went from being an interested kid who watched this game because I played soccer and Argentina were famous, to being turned into a lifetime Socceroos

Remembering when a Charlie Yankos free-kick put Oz football on the map

Beating Serbia in 2010 was pretty great too.

And a couple of friendlies stand out 3-1 over England in England was a monkey off the back, Charlie Yankos free kick against then world champions Argentina pretty much made me a life long Socceroos fan.

Win over France and a draw with Brazil in the confederations cups were results that warmed the soul.

Why three defeats in Brazil should be included in the pantheon of Australia’s greatest footballing moments

Mixed feelings on this one.
Zero wins but team was good to watch and Ange was one of the best things about the A League. They then went on to win the Asian Cup.
The way things are going that’s a competition we might not even be competitive in soon (10 years).

The bad feelings around the 2014 World Cup stem from it being so connected to our 2018 team. The gloom surrounding what we can expect in Russia looms over this.

Why three defeats in Brazil should be included in the pantheon of Australia’s greatest footballing moments

Shouldn’t be that bad a trip. Lots of direct flights to Seoul and from there the KTX (speed train) gets from Seoul to Ulsan in about 3 hours.
Worse than that and they must be locked in to a deal with an airline that’s seriously dampening their ability to compete.

That’s still 15 hrs of travel midweek to then play in front of less than 1k people though.

Must be anti climatic for the players.

Talk is cheap in an A-League round that counts for plenty

I remember you going against the grain by defending Holman during the lead up to the 2010 World Cup.

And as much as I like the guy and also defended his purpose in the team back then, I’m also not convinced he will work out.
I haven’t seen him play for a few years but he looked broken even then. His physical attributes were a huge part of his game, more so than Emertons in my opinion.

I hope I’m wrong though, because it would be nice to see him do well.

Why do so many football fans know so little about the game?

Going from pre season to playing a world cup qualifier is a stretch for even the top tier of players.

Socceroos name squad for Jordan World Cup qualifier

Could just be part of the robust negotiations with Gosford Council.

I think the FFA really let them down by making them play that Grand Final against the Jets in Sydney.
Hosting the Grand Final would have really made them the Central Coasts team.

Mariners need to be careful with mixed messages around a Northern exposure

This is probably the issue that grates me most when I listen to commentary.

David Williams who plays for Heart is the one that stands out.
Way to inconsistent, I feel like throwing something at the TV when they talk him up.

Talking up potential Socceroos? Pump the brakes

I enjoy the marquee circus.

The fact some of them turn out to be duds doesn’t reduce my enjoyment at all.

They really should be bums on seats type if you want to get your money back. A club like MV are just looking for wins though.

I think Hesky and Gallas have/will been/be good. They are really good media operators and just generally great blokes with great footballing stories.
They may not cut through to the mainstream culture but it’s nice to have some marquess for the footballing public.

If you want to reach the mainstream press then you have to sign world cup winners or former premier league stars (Scholes, Owen and Giggs etc).

A-League marquees missing the mark

I think the big concern about Moss would not be that he’s god enough but that he has to transition form beigng number 2 to the main man.

That’s proved tough for a lot of coaches.

Is it such a bad thing if Melbourne Heart finish last?

Brilliant start to the comments 🙂

Is it such a bad thing if Melbourne Heart finish last?

No pressure on Rogic … no pressure at all 🙂

History not on Bresciano's side

It just seems weird that a player gets booed while playing ok andiIt’s not like he is keeping Messi out of the side.

I think the Neil out campaign is stupid. I also thought the Holman boo boys were stupid, and I will probably think the next hate campaign is stupid too.

I don’t mind fans thinking that and expressing it (not so much at the game though) but if it gets vitrioilic it just feels juvenile. I am much more inclined to listen to people who play the ball rather than the man and are preaching alternatives rather than droning on about Lucas being old.

The off field discussion is interesting. They are fantastic representatives of football but Neil and Cahill do come of as self serving a lot of times. The rumour about home based players being upset the foreign based players spend all their spare time chasing Aussie sponsors doesn’t sound unbelievable.

Did Neill deserve to be booed in Sydney?

I agree with this.

New Zealand with Reid is a much stronger team. It is only one player but it was the same with Ryan Nelson.
That one quality centre back was a mini coach on the field.

However even though they are progressing they are not in the top 32.
Getting to the U20 World Cup, the Olympics and the Confederations cup is a pretty good deal.

As it has turned out they aren’t taking advantage of this and missed out on the last confederations cup.

That is what they should concentrate on now. Getting their act together and making bank from being the best in the region and always qualifying for those marquee tournaments and having a decent shot at the World Cup.

Ricki Herbert is also a pretty suspect manager and hopefully they get a decent one who takes advantage of what they have.

Is it time to farewell Oceania?

I think that is a good point about SBS.

There has been robust criticism for a long time in Australian Football. On the Ball hardly took a softly softly approach on issues.
And when the World Game site appeared I remember the public comments being pretty nasty about everyone and everything.

A-League coaches on trial by social media?

I am a big fan of the 3 plus 2 AFC because it is a good set up for competing in the ACL.

No matter what player is injured you can still use all 4 of the other players.

I don’t like your restrictions in 2 though Fussball.
I think clubs should be free to find what works for them. You never know what strange contacts a coach could have and it’s a big world out there. I wouldn’t want to forbid the weird and wonderful signings.
That Spanish backpacker playing for the Phoenix might go on to become naturalised and play for NZ.

I think you have to give the clubs some rope.

Should the A-League reduce the number of foreign players?

Sasa was pretty old when he got his first cap as well.

Not that abnormal for centre backs or Goal Keepers to come good late.

Postecoglou names his first Socceroos squad for Costa Rica friendly

I think Sunday afternoon (and Saturday afternoon) is it’s own problem. Playing in the heat always reduces the spectacle.

Monday night lights: future of the A-League

That sums up Sydney FC’s recruitment/retention.

Spend big money bringing in a Striker from another A league club when they could have used that money to keep Griffiths and built some form of continuity.

Mariners prove they're more contenders than pretenders
