In the red zone teams will give up a penalty so they can recover their defensive pattern and/or oxygen debt. The referee should be able to award a penalty on the run by starting the tackle count again (the attacking team can opt to take the shot at goal). This would defeat the defensive tactic of slowing down the action.
The wrestle; slows the game down and if you don’t do it you’re foolish. Why not start getting stats as to how slow teams are allowed to play ? A good start would be time from ‘contact’ to ‘held’ to when the dummy half touches the ball in the play the ball. Funny thing about stats; they pinpoint strengths and weaknesses. This particular stat would highlight teams, players and referees as to their inadequacies in controlling ruck speed.

"The worst I've seen": Bennett slams NRL over referee leniency

The issue is exacerbated by players getting the boot from one club only to be picked up at another. Mainly because he’s the player a club is always looking for and the criminal history is worth the hassles… because, “He didn’t do it at our club.”
For a long time now I have pushed to replace the salary cap with a points based system which will keep roster ‘costs’ much more transparent. If a player is convicted of a crime he should attract maximum roster points. This would make him less of an option for most clubs.

How much longer until all NRL fans walk away?

How much is any player worth ?
Clubs pay what they think they’ll be getting. The quality of the player depends on many things; fitness, dedication, luck etc. The money is an arbitrary value that one club has. Another club may value the same player differently. What we have is a system where we are comparing apples and oranges.
The NRL needs to rate players according to their experience.
e.g. A current test player is rated as a 10. Origin = 9, NRL = 8, etc. A club is allowed a maximum of 150 points (+ or minus ?) on their 30 man roster. Each year a player is with a club his rating is reduced by 1 point for that club but should he be on the market he is worth his full value to any other club.
As far as monetary value goes… NRL should keep an eye on it but there are always in-house deals we will never know about.
With a points system everyone knows a player’s value and ‘salary cap’ issues become transparent to all; players, management, supporters.

Sharks directors phones confiscated by NRL in salary cap investigation

The draw is flawed. It’s not fair both in when and who plays. e.g. An Anzac Day match on a Wednesday ? Doesn’t help the club that has to travel to or from NZ (or Perth) 3-4 days earlier/later (How the hell did that happen ?)? Oh I wonder how the clubs hat haven’t played any of the bottom 4 teams yet are feeling (’cause they’ve played the teams at the top of the table… maybe that’s why they’re at the top of the table ?)
I have suggested many times that the NRL should take on a conference style competition. Two 8 team conferences. You play your own conference once for the first 7 weeks; the other conference for the next 8 weeks and then your conference again for the last 7 weeks… Look at that 22 games ! Top 3 from each conference and next best 2 go into an 8 team semi final series… Look same as we have now !
The draw… A template that is the same every year depending on your results from the previous year. All clubs get a share of all days and timeslots and the TV stations can bicker over the scraps.

The $7 million answer to the NRL's crap-ass fixture

I stand corrected, according to

there were 6 from Reds and 6 from Mariners in the Storm 1998 squad

The rise of the Newcastle Knights

As a long term RL follower and Knights supporter since day 1 (30 years ago) I do believe you are right. Newcastle was the swaying factor as to the ARL/Super League battle. The Hunter Mariners became the Melbourne Storm and look where that went !
As far as the top 8 goes; If the Knights aren’t knocking on that door this year I’d be surprised. Last year they lacked the finishing-off factor of closing out games. One stat I read was along the lines of ‘had the Knights won most of the games they were leading at half time, they would have made the 8’.
True, some of their buys are in their twilight but these buys are hardened big game players that will teach the finishing skills required over the next 4-5 seasons.
As far as 4th time spooners ??? I think the Titans are in for a rough year.

Get rid of the play the ball !
When you’re tackled – put the ball on the ground behind you (al la rugby) and that can be the play the ball, why slow the game down with a play the ball ?
Same rule as touch football – If the dummy half gets caught with the ball it’s a handover and the dh can’t score.

That simple change will seepd the game up heaps ! And make it less predictable

Does rugby league need a dose of the ELVs?
