I thought 1 week is pretty fair for that. It was deliberate high contact, gotta have something meaningful for that in terms of game time, as opposed to just a fine.

Five talking points from AFL Round 10

We made Richmond look ordinary, Port were too busy making themselves look ordinary for us to have much say in the matter.

Five talking points from AFL Round 10

I want to know when Ely Smith is going to get a game. First pick 2018 draft and we’ve still never given him a run. Gonna lose him if we don’t use him at some stage surely.

Five talking points from AFL Round 10

Big fan of James Madden too. He’s got great hands, reads the play well, great commitment – bit unsure where to kick it when he’s taken an uncontested mark, but he’ll learn that.

No wonder Marlion tried to rip his head off. Jealousy is an ugly beast.

I only watched the Friday game but that was a cracker even though it wasn’t that close. I gather there were some real nailbiters this weekend though!

Five talking points from AFL Round 10

Largely depends on the commentator I find. Not always the case they’re always a patriotic fool.

Alistair Lynch has been very fair and equitable in calling Lions and Suns games for many years.

The tyranny of the commentator who calls their own game

Honestly Les you could have just said “everything since 2012” and hit submit on this piece.

The case against reappointing Nathan Buckley

I really wish people would stop banging on about Mike Hussey’s 134* as one of the all-time great knocks. Pakistan openly admitted they threw that game years later – he was dropped several times and then they came out and deliberately lost wickets to ensure they lost the game.

Do not agree at all with the attacks on Matthew Hayden – he is absolutely one of our two greatest openers, alongside Trumper, and I’d have him in a heartbeat. Given all the high profile run pigs in Australian, England, NZ and South African conditions we’ve seen over the last two decades it’s a rare thing indeed to have a player who was so successful on the subcontinent.

How the Suns can salvage their 2021 season

The Neale trade is a classic example. We got him and pick 30 for picks 6/19/55 – the Suns did a swap for pick 19 to help us out.

Meanwhile Suns had to hand over pick 2 for Weller – and they did that because pick 2 was worthless to them, they either burn it at the draft on a player who probably walks out after a few years or they secure someone who’s committing to 10 years. For any other club that would be being ripped off, with the Suns it was making the best of the cruddy situation the free agency market has placed them in

How the Suns can salvage their 2021 season

Looks good – but let’s see what the BBL looks like. Probably 10 weeks from early December to early Feb and will squat right across the summer and all of these games.

if we field an understrength side against Afghanistan and get rolled I’ll be laughing pretty hard.

At least we don’t have to listen to any of the tired old schtick about the invincible Gabbatoir anymore.

Cricket Australia need to get it right for the next summer

Because in large part the Brisbane fortunes have been revived on the strength of players snared from the Suns and some pretty favourable pick swaps.

We are the bigger more successful club within the state and are more attractive to players. Much the same reasons as to why Freo is terrible and the Eagles are so successful.

Pigs they do, where do the Suns get extra salary cap space compared to other clubs atm?

How the Suns can salvage their 2021 season

Increased salary cap & subsidies from the AFL. COLA worked for Sydney and Brisbane, it would work for the suns. The Suns can’t offer the on-field success that other clubs can, or the history/culture, so they need to be able to offer off the field money that other clubs can’t match.

“a genuine AFL fan” – someone who drinks Gil’s kool-aid without gagging or questioning

if the AFL had its time over again it should have gone to Western Sydney & Tasmania, not the Gold Coast.

How the Suns can salvage their 2021 season

Always the same old story for the Suns, they’ll be better next year.

100% agree that they don’t have anywhere near enough firepower up front and they need to get Lukosius forward. Might as well get some good mileage out of him and Rankine before they take off.

The main issue I see for the Suns is all their elite draft picks are going to walk out around age 25 or whenever they qualify for free agency – and that will always continue, particularly if we go to 20 sides in the future to get Tasmania in. The talent is spread too thin for the size of the salary cap, and it makes it much easier for some random club to throw a couple hundred grand more per year at some player that really, really fits their niche recruitment needs.

Tom Lynch is a smart man – he knew he was never going to win a flag at the Suns, and loyalty & money can’t buy a premiership. I expect Lukosius, Rankine and perhaps even Rowell to all walk out the door in the prime of their career. That’s why everyone is so patronising to the Suns – everyone knows any success they have is on borrowed time, because the core of this club will always be developing elite talent and providing a final pay cheque for Richmond or Sydney’s 23rd best player each year.

Just for that I hope GWS win the flag in 2021 – just to see you try and shift merch for that pack of orange nobodies 😛

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 10

The only place Clarke enjoyed spending time at more than the crease was in the spotlight.

For what it’s worth I agree with him that there’s no way the bowlers wouldn’t have known it was going on – unless it was truly that bad an attempt that the ball didn’t actually get affected – but the current crop of players would be well advised not to continue trading words with an indefatigable narcissist with a lot of spare time on his hands and an endless stream of tweets to fill it with.

Clarke fires back in ball-tampering debate

Good article Cam – I agree they should have kept Hodge and Mitchell, not sure Roughhead had much left in him though.

Given I don’t disagree with much you’ve said – although a whack at Jeff Kennett wouldn’t have gone astray – what would you like to see Richmond do when it becomes clear Comet Dusty has passed its zenith and the long yellow and black streak is coming to an end? Crater into oblivion for a few years and then try and come back, or try and limp on for one more burst of glory?
