Handy win.

Thanks for the call Brendan. Evening all. ⚽

Two goals, one a cheeky Panenka, plus a cheeky smooch from the stands.

He’s having a good night, the lad.

Ah, beautiful football!

Big Edmondson is a little more than a a target man/arriete/wardrobe, depending on what you like to call ’em. 😊

Very interesting talk in the last week or so. If Victoria Park did get the nod as the main Olympic stadium, with the AFL and quite possibly/probably cricket to follow after 2032, what happens to the Gabba?

That site could be reconfigured, and in a much less disruptive way than was originally proposed for 2032. Busway, future underground station across the road, lots of football history as you say…

BTW, thanks for the preview Connor.

Knowing nothing about Odisha, other than that Roy Krishna plays for ’em, I found this most useful ahead of the match. 👍

Yeah, very contrasting styles and weaknesses. Much as that old article suggests, Australia struggled with the pace and movement along the ground, relying heavily on the goalkeeper in Brisbane especially. Good crowd too.

Maybe Ange-ball was copied from the Indian version of tiki-taka about 70 years earlier – I always said Ange was an overrated plagiarist. 😊

Barefoot players, a game at the MCG and 'kisses' from the sunshine: Indian football's 1938 Australian tour

It sounds like it was quite the test series too. Australia won 3-1 but had a very hard time of it, including what sounds like a rollicking 4-4 draw in Brisbane which the local press appreciated, “they treated the crowd of 16,000 to a display of speedy soccer such as is rarely seen in Brisbane. Playing with machine-like precision, they seldom lifted the ball from the ground”

No, it should definitely be called the world game, the new world game perhaps.

I mean, we’ve already conquered America, plus one of Friday night’s games will feature a player who was born in Australia, grew up and progressed into professional rugby league in France, and has Māori, Samoan, Irish and Chinese heritage.

You know it makes sense.

Rugby league needs a new name but what can you call it to stand out in football’s confusingly crowded landscape of codes?

Leaving aside that comically simplistic misreading of American history, what exactly does it have to do with Mr Trump and his beliefs, as quoted above?

Well, they’ll need to get past the Dragons on grand final day.

Anything’s possible, I suppose.

New season, new possibilities.

Quite possibly.

Seems an odd way of trying to fill the, erm, void, but it’s something to do I suppose.

Violence is not 'passion': Wanderers fans chuck a wobbly again... why is it always them?

There was a reporter in Spain a few years back who went undercover and infiltrated a few of the ‘Ultra’ groups in Madrid – can’t remember whether it was Real or Atlético, but it doesn’t matter.

I’m not suggesting ALM supporters groups are equivalent to ‘Ultras’ – different country, different cultures, I’m not aware of A-League supporter groups being as closely aligned with political movements… But from what I’ve seen, there are some similarities.

Obviously, the reporter observed that the groups are comprised almost entirely of young men, some of whom have criminal records and/or a propensity for violence, many of whom are clearly searching for some form of identity/belonging – all of which contributes to a strong sense of us and them (sound familiar?).

One of the more amusing observations was that the vast majority of members who found a steady girlfriend ceased active involvement in Ultra groups almost immediately.

Youth, lack of judgement, excess testosterone, an in-built element who are highly suspicious of, if not actively hostile toward, authority, insular attitudes, easily provoked.

To some extent it’s inevitable, which doesn’t make it right. Nor is football the only area which struggles to deal with young men who don’t have anything better to do.

If there had been a Brisbane Strikers ‘Ultra’ group around when I was in my late teens/early 20s, I may well have joined. We’d have caused some havoc – all five of us! 😊

“Interesting that you, David, speak of conceited and self serving comments and this is how you approach this topic. Pot and kettle.”

Playing the man – irrelevant.

“The two contexts have nothing at all in common…”

Different subjects, of course, but the principle is exactly the same.

“It would appear that you’ve been waiting a very long time to try for some type of connection to a topic yet over reached dramatically and missed this time.”

No, the thought occurred while I was reading through the comments. Looks like I hit exactly the nerve I was aiming for.

” I couldn’t care less about A League or the women’s game nor do I pretend too.”

So, what are you doing here?

“your own “do you like apples” moment”

Oh right, that’s what you’re doing here.

“If you have something to say, say it.”

You’re a total hypocrite. There you go – happy?

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

No, I haven’t seen it.

Police tend to be pretty good at covering their backsides – hence my suggestion that the best way around that is to get organised and try to change culture (and ideally in the case of the RBB, behave themselves).

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

“A League players don’t make these kind of headlines – because no one knows who they are.”

Interesting. I recall being rather earnestly lectured by somebody called ‘Nat’ last year when I made a series of unflattering remarks about a certain interstate rugby league exhibition series on the grounds that it should be considered an unimportant – toxic even – part of the sport’s landscape.

The objection of this ‘Nat’ person was something along the lines of: ‘that such negativity would erode the innocent enjoyment of others in relation to said interstate exhibition series…’

It was a conceited and self-serving objection, of course, but I’m happy to keep such thoughts to myself, given I have little to gain and don’t particularly wish to pursue the matter (though my opinion hasn’t changed at all).

Would it not behove you to consider a similar course of action in relation to the A-League? Or do you enjoy talking down from your perch high above to we mere mortals too much (that was my favourite part of your homily last year)?

I actually have some experience with the interstate exhibition series. What do you know about the ALM/W? What do you think of Wellington’s title prospects? Does Macarthur have a legit shot? Could Glam FC come home on a wet sail? What’s wrong with Wanderers?

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

I think you’d need to demonstrate a consistent pattern over a number of years through various iterations of ‘Police Powers’ laws and regulations in multiple jurisdictions.

That would be near impossible, if not actually impossible.

The better path would be organisation among active supporter groups highlighting instances where police have/may have acted improperly/disproportionately toward football supporters, and when a decent body of evidence has been amassed, engage some independent legal advice and approach a Minister/Law Reform Commission/Human Rights Commision/friendly media outlet/all of the aforementioned.

There’s limited prospects there as well, but it’s probably the better path to actually affect behaviour. Police tend to bristle at legal judgements and figure out a way around them, unless they’re so heinous that they have no choice (e.g. corruption, coronial inquests).

Public opinion/convention is arguably a more powerful weapon.

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

Well, we all get ‘sleptical’ [sic] on occasion, but ‘an A-league’ [sic] is good value.

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

No mentions of certain folk ‘poisoning the blood’ either. Oh wait…

Sound like the RBB has an existentialist and/or would-be Nietzschian in its ranks. 😊

Essentially Peter Dutton without the intellect, charm and charisma. 😊
