Yeah I suspect he knew it was a racially-based insult, and had likely used it before.

And if that’s the case, as you say, using it as a ‘sledge’ is appalling…

NRL News: Leniu pleads guilty to monkey racial slur, apologises to Mam - 'I said the word but I didn't mean it in a racist way'

Another chapter in one of the strangest sporting careers ever…

NBA season over as Simmons backs out yet again with long-term future under a cloud

I’m fine with the way things are, although its always weird seeing backs packing down in the scrum and props standing at 5/8th!

NRL's kick restart rule helps bring back another genuine contest but what about scrums, it isn't fair

Yeah, it’ll be interesting to see if he has more to say about it and shows more contrition for his actions/words. Its hard to know whether Leniu fully grasps the implications of what he said. The term ‘monkey’ has a long and horrible history in racism, which I hope someone explains to Spencer.

I just feel better for Mam not having to go through the process of trying to prove what he heard.

Hate to say this, but PVL and Abdo are probably happy Leniu’s racial slur will take the headlines away from these US TV ratings, which are a disaster!

Eels back in the swim for 2024 or heading up the river? Why they will and won't make the finals

Yeah, maybe I’m over-valuing the draw. There’s just so little that separates those ‘middle’ teams that I think the difference between making the 8 and not making it, will come down to 1 or 2 wins.

Even so, the Sharks on paper look pretty solid to me. Hynes is a class player and I think Trindall is in for a big year…he’s only 24yrs old and looked good in the Indigenous game. They also have speed and size out wide, and a big pack with Finucane and Rudolf coming off the bench. Should be hard to beat…at least until the first round of the finals!

Is there a recommendation in there about the not obsessively talking about rugby league and how great it is?

I think I’ve been wrong at the beginning of every year, so who knows!

I have the Sharks in, only because of their draw. Without factoring the draw in, I think the Knights and Cowboys are better than them.

The Sharks play Raiders, Bulldogs, Titans, Cowboys, Rabbitohs, Dragons, Warriors, and Tigers, twice…which is a dream. And the one time they play the Broncos is 3 days after Origin I. If the Sharks don’t make it, it would be a disaster for them…

He did the right thing by admitting what he said, so credit to Leniu for that at least. Hopefully he, and others, will learn a massive lesson from this.

I do wonder though if the Roosters knew he’d be found guilty at the judiciary, and encouraged him to own up to it, to reduce his suspension.

Yep, this is the thing…

Its hard to imagine Penrith, Brisbane, Roosters and Storm wont make the 8, so those final four positions will be tough. Parra’s odds would tell you they wont be one of those final four teams. They have worse odds than the Wahs, Bunnies, Manly, Cowboys, Sharks and equal with the Knights.

I have (in no particular order): Penrith, Brisbane, Roosters, Storm, Warriors, Sharks, Bunnies and Manly. Main threat to that top 8 are the Cowboys. Parra I have outside the 8 mainly because of their outside backs and tough schedule…they play a bunch of good teams twice.

Great article and completely agree, Christo.

I coach an U9 rugby team, and very occasionally, we’ll bump into a kid or kids who say some pretty awful things on the field, for 8 and 9yr olds. If stricter rules are introduced at a professional level, those will filter down to lower levels, which is really important.

It's time for the NRL to put a line in the sand to deal with players' on-field sledging

Nothing to worry about for the Broncos. Robinson had announced weeks ago that the Roosters wouldn’t start another season half-asleep, and he had them ready to roll from game 1.

The Broncos looked rusty, but will be fine in a few weeks.

‘Convicted’/’sentencing’…He’s not being sent to Long Bay! He’s been charged and will attend a judiciary hearing, where he can try to explain himself.

I think given his post match comments though, he clearly said what he said. He did TWO post match interviews and didn’t deny saying it in either.

‘Fun and games, banter’: Leniu response to racial allegation beggars belief as ‘heat of the battle’ mentality harms NRL yet again

Yeah fair enough…you;re probably right, which makes it all the worse. I doubt this is the first time Leniu has used that word in that context, given it’s something he said spontaneously.

Leniu to face judiciary over alleged 'monkey' racial slur, heated hotel confrontation revealed, Tuqiri blasts Robbo

You can look up a dictionary for a definition of racism…its been the same for a long time, and its not a challenging concept to understand. The hard bit is admitting we live in a society where casual racism is seen as acceptable, as evidenced by some of the comments on these articles.

And its not a ‘brave new world’. Black people have been dealing with this for generations. We just chose not to listen, or give them a voice in the first place.

You think Mam would make this up? Leniu more or less admitted saying it after the game anyway…No one is denying it was said.

Calling someone an openly racist term is “niggling”? Come on…

Leniu to face judiciary over alleged 'monkey' racial slur, heated hotel confrontation revealed, Tuqiri blasts Robbo

Have to disagree DP. The word ‘monkey’ as a racial slur has a long and horrible history…Its so much more than just ‘name-calling’. Google it if you don’t believe me.

Beyond that, your comment implies Mam is at fault by saying something about it, when I think the opposite is true. Mam should be commended for calling out this rubbish, and Leniu should spend some time thinking/learning why his comment is so offensive, and re-evaluting his ideas of ‘fun and games’.

'NRL better deal with this s--t', says Latrell: Mam accuses Leniu of 'monkey' racial slur as Roosters outmuscle Broncos

Yeah, its interesting to look back at the hiring of Ikin by the QRL after leaving the Broncos, and this quote from Kevin Walters: “It’s a great job he’s walked into, maybe on the back of some of the work he’s done here we’ve helped him get a job at the QRL.” Of course, he was hired because he was the best person for the position, though…

V'landys may as well be executive chair because he's doing both jobs but league needs to fix lack of female leadership

And fair to assume Wighton’s pay-cut will be more than made up for in 3rd party deals, or via other avenues. There’s just no way Wighton left that much money on the table for a better chance to win a GF, or a change of scenery…

Believe it or not, Luciano Leilua is a marquee player - just a wildly overpaid one cashing in on Dragons' desperation

I think its more accurate to say “Its time MEN realised that giving preference to any one individual for reasons not related to the position, is discriminatory by definition”

Women have known for thousands of years that men get preference over women for reasons not related to a position.

“Well who would be more qualified”? Kate Jones…by some margin.

Look, I get that ‘politicians’ aren’t anyone’s favourite people, but the 20yr resume of Kate Jones (and her recent re-election as a Commissioner) surely outweighs the 2yr resume of Ben Ikin.

I also think its reasonable to assume that ‘some’ of the success of the NRL over recent years, which we’re all quick to solely attribute to PVL, could be due to the people/team around him. Jones was appointed to the commission in 2020, so has been a part of the game’s recent success also.
