It’s a real question for them. The line out has been working fine in the sense that hookers are hitting the target and the jumpers are getting the timing right, but they are getting picked off far too often.

I do wonder whether defensive line outs have been better this season across the competition as a whole.

Five things we learned: One area Gordon must fix to convince Wallabies boss, ABs bruiser should be on notice

I feel like Muirhead is a better pure winger, but can’t play anywhere else.

Sapsford is the second best Brumbies player in a bunch of positions, which is a very useful thing to be, but might not be enough to get him into a yellow jersey.

Brumbies make it 12 straight against Tahs as Bell hobbles off in worrying sign for Wallabies

I love Sapsford and his versatility, but I don’t think he’s got the edge to make the step up.

I think his kicking from hand improved considerably over the offseason.

His choices have been spot on, and by eye at the ground it looks like his distance is up 10-15m, too.

One of the reasons the brumbies looked so good last night is they comprehensively won the kicking battle.

I think this misses the role he’s being asked to play. With White leaving he’s the primary decision maker and distributor, not a ball runner.

'It was brutal': Clutch Lolesio kicks Brumbies to 'Test match intensity' win over Reds as Wright shines again

I think he’s being pretty heavily coached to think about his broader responsibility to make decisions for the team, which leads him to be an indecisive when the only option is a low-impact run.

Once he can square the two away, he’ll be back to being a run first option like he was in his first season.

WR's mooted law changes are great - but show there's a hell of a lot wrong with rugby in 2024, and that sucks

I love both scrums and box kicks.

I have to say the nostalgia in my head is never borne up by old clips. Every time I look at clips from times far past I’m struck by how good the modern game is.

The only way we’re going to get a Super Rugby Pacific looping in Japan, Argentina and a US side is with a giant injection of private equity $.

I can’t imagine there’d be much control left for host unions in that world (and thus they would never go for it), nor that the new owners would have much interest in growing a Samoa or Tonga team.

Two new teams and a big show of faith to two more - how Super Rugby must kick on from a thrilling start to 2024

While I’m sure Smith wants to succeed, I’d doubt if his ranking is the thing motivating him.

He wants to try something new because it will be hard, and I’m also sure he knew there’d be a learning curve.

Opening up sends Smith falling to lowest ranking points for a decade

I think there’s a neat solution that gets the best of both worlds:

– domestic-based players for the RC and in-bound tours
– whoever we like for O/S tours and WC years (and possibly the Lions)

It gives emerging talent the chance to grow (and lock themselves into the coach’s plans), and means we’ve got the best possible team available for the World Cup.

I had never thought of it before, but now that I have, I can’t imagine him playing anywhere else.

Gordon as WB 12 has me very thoughtful.

Mr Jones, I put it to you that, for this very reason, Manuka Oval in Canberra is the best ground in Australia.

Wellington's character-filled Basin Reserve pities Australia's soulless, corporate stadiums

Even if that’s the reason it’s absurd, right? What about the insane punters who bet on the draw?

Amen, Ben. From your mouth to (the administrator) God’s ears.

Draws are awesome.

He’s never really been a top-end speedster. Very quick acceleration, but his top speed isn’t super high.

It’s what they want from him – he narrows the defence because he always gets double or triple teamed in the tackle.

Both rugby codes manage it fine, though. The key is having a penalty just strong enough, but not overkill. In the rugbies, it’s marching the penalty 10m downfield. In football, playing a man down for 10 minutes feels about right.

Shove your blue cards where the sun doesn't shine, football - the game is already over-officiated

I reckon that would happen once per league, though, and then that behavior would end.

TBH, I quite like the idea of players getting 10 minutes for dissent. Enforced strictly enough, it could deal with a real problem in the game.

Totally unnecessary and counter productive for everything else, though.

I reckon three Tests was just right. It’s always good to finish something wishing there was just one more taste left.

How Test cricket can shake off five stages of grief to not only survive but soldier on for another 150 years

Great work on the numbers.

TBH, I’m comfortable with a top four who wear down the bowlers so that 5, 6 and the tail can go after a slower, looser attack.

Scoring at a snail’s pace: Why Australia's pedestrian top four is about to get even slower

I don’t ask this in a provocative way, but:

If he has a blinder of a season for the Wallabies before he goes, is there a contractual reason he couldn’t be picked for them again while he’s playing NRL?
