“It’s a funny old tradition that the 10 has to be a goal kicker isn’t it.” Yeah what would happen if John Eales was around today ? Would they insist on haing the 10 be the goal kicker ? I don’t think so.

Wallabies' young gun mulling NRL switch as Rebels' future continues to cloud picture

‘Heck that’s fair play all day in the NRL’ If Rugby starts trying to copy the level of violence allowed in NRL then it will have well and truly gone to the dogs. NRL treat their players like cage fighters. They are there to entertain and bring in big dollars so the game can be a bigger betting opportunity. Player health is very low on their priorities. If the vision of a small guy getting smashed in an unlawful tackle by a very big guy is forgiven as ‘an aspect of the game fans like’ then I am not one of those fans. When cheap shots become normalised as legitimate physicality in the pursuit of dollars then it’s time the players association pushed back to protect their own.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

I can’t undertsand why the hit on Edmed wasn’t treated as a shoulder charge. I have looked at it several times and I can’t see any effort by the tackler to use his arms. The judiciary are failing to do their job. Why bother with policing head high tackles if offenses like this are going to be allowed?

Thanks CPM. Frizzel’s hipdrop on Bongi should have been redcarded. The video should be shown to all refs in training as an example of dangerous and dirty play.

There are only two ways rugby can go from here - and there's no middle ground between physicality and safety

The NRL seems to be heading in the direction of cage fighting…..where there is maximum opportunity to bet and not so much care about the health and well being of players. I say this based on observations of how rigorously high tackle rules are pursued in NRL compared to Rugby. There is no comparison. Rugby has a much stricter enforcement regime of high tackles as well as dangerous tackles. This can only mean that players, by comparison, will be better off from the approach taken by Rugby. It may also mean that Rugby is less attractive as a betting medium compared to NRL….’no pads, no helmets’….blah blah blah. And so NRL drifts off towards a place where the danger to players is part of the hype and betting excitement – even if it means less care for players. All the pressure is to make more and more money. The media people and the big end of town will put ratings above player safety every time. Even some players liken Rugby to warfare! I think Rugby should hold the line for player safety and not chase the big money in the gambling world whether it’s Las Vegas or Sydney because those drivers will inevitably want a more relaxed regime around head shots – more carnage, more spectacle, more betting frenzy etc. And lots of pressure not to issue red cards in finals because it ‘destroys the spectacle’. I think there should be less talk comparing Rugby unfavourably to the big bucks in NRL and more consideration of the essentials which will make it sustainable. All of which doesn’t make it easy for Rugby managers but trying to chase the NRL rainbow isn’t the way to go in my view.

Rugby News: RA hunting missing million after contract blunder, Suaalii worth 10x more than his deal, McKellar's big win

Thanks BennO I too am weary of the political swipes that always seem to go in one direction: the Labor Party. Such as; “Despite the setting up of a ‘national cabinet’, that united façade only ever lasted for as long as it suited the needs of each state premier; Western Australia’s Mark McGowan and Queensland’s Anastacia Palaszczuk – “Queensland hospitals are for Queensland people” – notably playing the self-interest card at every opportunity”. I’m with the millions who thought those Premiers made the right public policy call – a very difficult one at that. I’m also unclear on why the self-interest of Morrison and Berejiklian wasn’t considered to be ‘notable’ .

ANALYSIS: McLennan's fatal blind spot, and why his exit leaves Australian rugby in a better place and a worse one

I also think sli vunivalu and james o.connor have plenty more to offer and have been under used.

The only way is up, baby - What the next Wallabies coaching setup should look like

I’d like to see more of Quade Cooper. If he thinks his body is up to it then get him back. He has so much to offer and had been so wasted.

The only way is up, baby - What the next Wallabies coaching setup should look like

Well spotted CPM. This video clearly shows the contrived hip drop very well. First the elbow to the thigh then the drop onto the knee. I think that settles it for me

Looks like he was clearly trying to damage his – Mbonmbi’s – leg…………….and consequently deserved a red card. Which raises the issue of referees being influenced in their judgements by considering the damage to the game as a spectacle if they issue two red cards to the same team……I think they are obliged to issue them otherwise the thugs will run riot. This is what occurs in State of Origin. The heavy hitters/thugs know there will be no send offs so they go for broke………or ‘broken’ to be more precise

Rugby News: World Rugby warns Kiwis' over 'robbery' whine, Barnes hits back at ABs, damning report into 'toxic' culture

I too have looked at the Frizzell neck pull followed by a hip drop many times and I’m firmly convinced it must have sailed very close to being a red card. He was very lucky to get the benefit of the doubt. He deserves full marks for making it appear accidental.

'Lower-tier fans have had a gutful of the inconsistency': Shag calls for the TMO's head - but is it really such a big problem?

“There is a difference between putting on a big hit and pulling a Darcy Swain.”……or a Shannon Frizell

SPIRO ZAVOS: 'Crazy brave' Boks are a team for the ages - but key decisions cleared their path to glory

INYO WROTE…….”Frizells Yellow was ludicrouS…..he fell over in a ruck and unfortunately landed on a Bok player and injured him..a clear accident..no malicious intent..not foul play.”

I thought Frizell’s offense was ‘dirty and deliberate’ and worthy of a red card…..both for trying to dislocate Mbonambi’s neck by pulling his head sideways and then collapsing his whole weight onto Mbonambi’s knee in what looked to be one of those cynical ‘accidentally on purpose’ hipdrops. He had other options in how to land in the clearout and he didn’t take them. Like all top class rugby players Frizell has a highly refined sense of balance and movement at high speed…….and this includes clear vision about where his hips are going to impact when falling. In my view Frizell got off lightly considering considering he might have ended Mbonambi’s career.

THE GREATEST! Boks beat All Blacks in instant classic to claim record FOURTH RWC in controversial, dramatic final

“In other words, Frizell was not targeting Mbonambi’s lower leg, so not even a penalty should have been awarded. ” It looks to me that Frizell’s collapse onto Mbonambi’s exposed knee was a disguised hip drop. He had lots of other options about how to do the clear out which didn’t require him to collapse his full and falling weight onto Mbonambi’s knee. It deserved a red card. The strong arm reef on Mbonambi’s neck could have done damage as well. As for SA not being able to score trys….it looked to me that they went within a whisker on several occasions.

SPIRO ZAVOS: 'Crazy brave' Boks are a team for the ages - but key decisions cleared their path to glory

Good call CPM. I too thought Frizell’s offense was ‘dirty and deliberate’ and worthy of a red card…..both for trying to dislocate Mbonambi’s neck by pulling his head sideways and then collapsing his whole weight onto Mbonambi’s knee in what looked to be one of those ‘accidentally on purpose’ incidents. Whether it was negligent or deliberate it doesn’t surprise me to see endless whining about Darcy Swain’s offense on the one hand and a huge dummy spit on the other when an AB is adjudged to have offended. In my view Frizell got off lightly considering he might have ended Mbonambi’s career.

The World Cup Wrap: France 2023 got a final befitting the host nation - imperfect, baffling and historic

Geoff wrote : “Not a touchy-feely, Kevin Rudd-style, Canberra talkfest, but a proper, meat and potatoes, warts and all summit, with real, actionable outcomes.”

I’m not sure why in a rugby column you think it’s OK to make derogatory, half smart remarks about national political leaders – in this case a former Labor Prime Minister and current Ambassador to the US. There’s enough anti – Labor claptrap in the press already. I suggest you confine your political discourse to another place or you can count me out in future.

Forget Eddie's Coogee circus, the biggest questions Australian rugby must answer were revealed in Paris

Gary wrote – 50% of a 83k home crowd were opposition supporters? And this is a regular thing the Wallabies face – does anyone else find that disturbing? – yes it’s it’s not just disturbing it’s really offensive. Whatever happened to loyalty to the local team ? And the local team on the weekend were the Wallabies ……

The Wrap: Don’t buy Eddie Jones taking the blame for another Bledisloe loss, buy the hope instead

Judging by the way the Reds reacted when JOC came on I’m surprised he is not being considered in the mix for leadership ……..he should definitely be in the leadership group.

O Captain, my Captain! Contenders to lead the Wallabies at RWC - and the surprise option who could suit Eddie

Has anyone asked Mark Ella what he thinks of the Alan Jones comment ?

'Psychopath': Eddie responds to Alan Jones as new Wallabies coach arrives in Oz and announces Bledisloe dream

I just re-watched Caderyn Neville get smashed side-on in the knee by the England no. 17 – Marco Vunipola. It’s in the 55th minute of the second test. And then there is a replay in the 57th minute. Neville copped Vunipola’s full body weight side on into his knee in what looked to me liked a deliberate attempt by Vunipola to maim him. It;s hard to see it in any other way. Worth a look if you’re interested to see how the English play the game. There’s a lot of attention paid to high tackles but Vunipola’s action looks like the worst of cage fighting which is all about maiming.

REACTION: Perese and Petaia join Wallabies' devastating injury list as Eddie's England level series

Yes I did see those missed tackles and for that reason i think Edmed shows a lot more promise and should be in the squad on form. Edmed looks strong enough to take it up in traffic when he has to without getting completely monstered.

ANALYSIS: Rennie names a strong squad that's purpose built to defuse England's main attacking threat

I would have added Tane Edmed to the squad and dropped Lolesio. Among other things Edmed can take on the line in tough going and can tackle. ….or at least make a good attempt. Lolesio needs more development time to prove himself.

WALLABIES SQUAD: Rennie names six new faces for England battle but leaves out big names in shock twist

I think Hunter Paisami could use some practice at drawing and passing. He’s too predictable at the moment…..when he’s running wide centre on centre

REACTION: 'Really disappointing'- Trans-Tasman gulf remains a chasm as Reds choke and Hurricanes rip in

Has it always been the rule that you can’t bring down a player in the maul? . I thought you could way back in the sixties which made it easier to defend against

When will fans stop trying to drive the maul out of rugby union?

Did anyone else notice what I thought was an elbow to the back of Siya Kolisi’s head which had him off the field for a short period ? I thought it was Retallick who delivered this cheap shot ……

MATCH REPORT: Springboks edge All Blacks in one of the GREATEST Tests

I thought Noah Lolesio was very lucky to play 2 games straight and I hope for the Wallabies sake he’s not picked again. They need to try someone else or they’ll be shaky under fire again……and will lose again.

RENNIE SPEAKS: Kerevi set to play as two key Wallabies ruled out, positive JOC, Quade updates
