Your excellent article was only spoiled by a refernce to one of the most gutless players that ever laced up a boot..Richard Loe. Hard you say…smashing an opposition player with his elbow while the player is defenceless on the ground is not being hard..it is the act of a coward.

Apart from holding up a scrum Loe contributed very little else on the paddock. Cast your memory back to that famous test in Sydney where George Gregan before he saved the game with his tackle on Wilson, had early in the game easily smashed the so called “hard man” . Nothing further was seen from Loe that day. Steve Finnane and Ray Price (in his Rugby days) would have had Loe in the first 5 minutes ! That Loe’s commentary apparently still has a following is a sad indicement on Rugby reporting in New Zealand.

Henry is Steyned: the All Blacks need a new coach

Agree with your 2nd point, absolutely. Only 20% of the points scored in this match were from the highest point scoring option – the try worth 5 points. 72% of the points scored were from penalties – the 2nd option in terms of points.

Apart from Gaelic football, no other football code in the world has this disparity

Sharp-shooting Steyn has Wallabies on red alert

It’s AFL not VFL…Is it a publicity stunt..maybe ..i’d prefer to call it a marketing strategy…Hunt’s AFL career may or may not be a success. He brings a natural athletic ability that probably is superior to many currently playing. That does not mean he will be able to grasp the specialist skills of the game and succeed. Nevertheless i reckon they will persist for at least 2 of the 3 yr contract to see whether this the case and i suspect the attention this brings to the code in general and the new GC team will generate $$$ in excess of the reported $3m shelled out to get him.

Look at the media coverage the 2 codes have received in the last 24 hrs. The heirachy at the NRL and AFL must be sitting back laughing and probably adding another million or two to the asking price for their next broadcast deals !!

Compare this to the coverage of Barnes coming to the Waratahs .. a great story but buried under the avalanche of NRL/ AFL coverage.
One final point on the Hunt crossover…i can’t believe you sign him up for $3m and then say go off and play Rugby in 2010. Surely the AFL can’t believe Rugby is that soft !

Karmichael Hunt can play like Michael Voss

I suspect all this angst over Barnes move to the Waratahs will surface again at the end of the next World Cup. Leaving Brisvegas for the Harbour City will make it an easy transition when he joins up with his favourite mentor …Mr Personality…Wayne Bennett at the Dragons for the 2012 season !

Poor decisions continue in Tahland

Thoroughly agree with your comments…sorry Zac , there was nothing new from JON that
wasn’t articulated when he resumed his role.
The international standing of Rugby has never been in question, the reality is though, in Australia
at least this has not enhanced its status domestically.Since the 2003 World Cup
Rugby has fallen behind the 2 major codes in the key areas of attendances ,sponsorship
and broadcast revenue.
Interestingly the airwaves are currently saturated with the news Karmichael Hunt is to play AFL
for the new Gold Coast franchise.
You are right Zac, it was kind of JON to respond to the Roar’s questions…it is just that the
responses were less than uplifting

responses that are disappointing. .

John O'Neill predicts a positive future for rugby

For someone who “struggles to watch it…you seem to know a lot about League.
Both have their merits…enjoy them !!

Old cliches about league and union surface again

Brett
Agree with you re the depth or lack of in putting together the next OZ S15 side. Suspect the current brooha over Tahu and Leaguies in Union will quickly subside. The new franchise will have to raid the NRL , not necessarily to put them in the starting 15 but to bolster the squad of 30. There will be a domino effect as i can see players from the current OZ S14 teams jump ship especially if it means a starting role with the new team Result more gaps to be filled. Rugby should look at the current U/20 NRL Comp…some very good raw talent on offer there, and most won’t progress to the top level just through shere weight of numbers and the salary cap.
Just reading that 10 bids have been received for the next team, including 2 from NZ and 1 from SA.
I’m sure the ARU will spin this for all it’s worth , but does anyone seriously believe that these consotiums have a chance and expect to establish a following here in OZ …or am i being to harsh ?

For mine , as many “Roarers” have alluded to , it will be and always was going to be Melbourne.

Cheers

Kiwis launch bid to be Aussie Super 15 team

What seems to be lost tin the Tahu debate, is that he is merely looking to exercise the clause in his contract (THAT HE NOT HIS AGENT NEGOTIATED) that he can seek a release if he is not selected to represent the Wallabies in a given season. This put’s the ball back squarely back in the ARU’s court and on present indications they seem happy to let him go…i find this puzzling as all the commentary i’ve read from Tahu’s coaches, teammates and officials is that he was making a good fist of his transition and was certainly part of future plans for the Wallabies. If that is the case then all the ARU has to do is decline his request. I sense that John O’Neill has probably played a bigger role in this than has been made public.Parramatta by the way have not officially tabled a contract waiting until the release is formalised.
Reality is the true story will probably never be known.

Tahu quits Wallabies, back to NRL

I think the the central point of the Kaless artticle is that the Tahu situation is just more fuel for the fire in the debate between League and Union supporters, one that has been raging since the codes split and likely to continue until one or both disappear. By way of a diversion if all contributers want a good laugh read Growden’s Ruck and Maul column in todays Sydney Morning Herald. Apparently the so called dust up between Moore and Alexander came to a halt when they saw Al Baxter advancing towards them !

God help us all if Wallaby fontrowers are fearful of Baxter. Matfied, McCaw and company, beware..”the Glare” is fired up and coming after you !

Old cliches about league and union surface again

Tahriffic
You’re scaring me !! If that backline takes the field, the busiest person at the SFS next season will be the scorer.

Home is where the heart is for Tahu

Jolly…you have nailed it. The decision on the next team is driven by $$ and nothing to do with expanding the game. Melbourne has (most importantly in JON’s eyes) the Corporate base and the ready made facilities. He also want to deliver to the broadcasters the best possible viewing audience and after NSW and Qld (currently 64% of the viewing audience) Melbourne is the next best option.
O’Neill has given up on Western Sydney..the two clubs that struggle most in the Shute Shield are Parramatta and Penrith…neither can field 3 colts sides !

Irrespective of where the 5th team is situated in Oz they will struggle. With O’Neill conducting his own ethnic cleansing policy of ridding the game of Leaguies plus the departure to Japan and Europe of quality but not necessarily top tier players, i can’t see where a competitive squad of 30+ players will come from.
Just reading that Sam Harris has signed with the Western Force…no offence but Sam is the “i’ve been everywhere man”…has a passport full of stamps but not much else to show for his time in Union and League. One final point…check out the new domestic competition structure anoounced for NZ and then compare it to what we have here In Oz and JON’s plans for the game and tell me who will deliver success consistently in the longer term !

Cheers

One Wallaby apparently doesn’t want it enought. News Limited reporting Tahau going back to Parramatta on a 3 year deal commencing 2010

The Wallabies just don't want it badly enough

Revisiting the Roar after a 2 year absence and good to see debate is as spirited as ever. Many good comments made re last Saturday and i would only add that the Wallabies lead up against the Baa Baa’s Italy and France who were in Oz on the end of season nite club tour was not ideal in the lead up to a Bledisloe in Auckland even against an AB’s side currently underperforming. The shortfalls in the Wallabies game have been well disected. What worries me is they have a 3 week break and next have to take on SA in SA.. Problems can only be solved on the field.

Wallabies: fifteen players, but not a team
