We will still need to see the doggies against some decent competition before a decent assessment of where they’re at this season. A bit harsh. Guthrie out Atkins out Duncan out Bruhn out with one midfielder playing with less than 3 games. A 9 to 18 free kick diff in Adelaide’s favour at their home ground and that’s what you base Geelong’s midfield performance on? If memory serves me the Cats manage one free kick in over 50 tackles. Despite all that the pussies took home the chocolates. It’s not Adelaide’s reliance on Tex and Laird, two brilliant players I might add, but it’s the fact that the rest of the team aren’t good enough collectively to make a serious assault on the finals.

Yes. There is a long season to go and hopefully my analysis will prove wrong for the doggies. Hopefully my tipping will be better this year though. I’ve already missed the first week and half of the second and generally miss about 6 weeks or so every year. Mostly attributable to being somewhere in the back blocks of Thailand. Mind you even there the internet is generally better than most of Oz.

With the depth of talent one needs to question whether Bevo still has it. I like the doggies but think their best years are behind them now and although they may contend I don’t think they can win it. They are stuck in that awful place some teams find themselves, where they are too talented for a rebuild but that moment when everything clicks and propels them into the GF has passed them by..

I’m glad you took comfort in teams beating the Cats last year. With anywhere between 5 to eight of their best players out each week and not content with that, trying to commit on field Hari Kari aka; Rohan on Cameron.
Fear not, no such comfort for you in 2024. Expect the brilliance of Wells and co once again prove they are the best recruiters in the AFL. Expect some new names to shine. Including a TK type.

That’s the case with any team. Look at the number of supporters that have jumped off the tiger and Hawthorn trains and how many have suddenly remembered they are Collingwood supporters.

I doubt you will get many takers at $44 per month which is the current overseas subscription rate. I wont pay that in thailand and i am an afl tragic. Who is going to pay a ridiculous rate like that for a sport they hardly know? If the afl want to promote the game they need to get some realistic overseas pricing.

I think it is now second and third. Melbourne is now bigger than Sydney.

You seem to be romanticising sport. That may have been true at one time when it was purely amateur and people played for love of the game but that train left the station long ago, especially as sport became more professional and basically a business. Now many lively hoods both on and off field rely on the game. Increased technology has put more scrutiny on the professional game and there is much more accountability. Players once got away with many on field and off field indiscretions that they no longer can in this day and age. The umpires IMO are part of this greater scrutiny. Their attention to the play at hand distracts them from seeing the overall play. There needs to be a select panel that vote on player performance. It may or may not include the umpires. In the end they are there to adjudicate the rules not decide on who the 3 best players of the day are, as evidenced by how many times they get it wrong.

I always say there is luck in winning a GF whether it be a good run without injuries or even dodging your nemesis in the finals. Geelong this year had I think the second most injured time out apart from the eagles. Collingwood have done incredibly well to win the close ones. I think they were a worthy winner but not an emphatic one. Not that that matters, its the scorecard that counts. If they go back to back it would be one of the best as they are clearly not head and shoulders above the top teams and those close ones can go the other way with a few injuries.
Cant finish without saying what a player is Pendles. His football sense is second to none along with the poise he shows every week. IMO the silkiest player in the AFL. A future hall of famer.

We should not accept bad decisions. That’s the path to mediocrity. I believe many have lost faith in the umpires ability to pick the best player. It has basically become the midfielders meddle. This maybe partly due to the 6,6,6 rule but the umpires have been shown to be severely out of touch on many games in 23.
The last thing we need to see is AFLs highest honour sink in relevance to other best player awards. The only way IMO is either to remove it from the umpires altogether and have a separate committee, or have a much larger group including umpires to adjudicate on the day. Either way it should not remain the domain of umpires only.

Whilst you can argue Collingwoods home ground advantage may have helped. Brisbane had their fair share of home ground advantage to get to the GF. While the pies got the rub of the green and the result could’ve gone either way. The pies were in front most of the day and IMO deserved the win. Congrats to pies fans enjoy your win.

Whenever there is a controversial story making headlines we seem to always get some aparent rookie extolling the virtues of the story of the day on this football opinion site. This site should stick to football and not promote someones political agenda. I personally am sick of politics in sport. When it happens it always defaults to the politically correct narrative regardless of the rights or wrongs regardless of the view of the majority of the fans who support that sport. It is not their job to tell the people that support that sport how to vote. As for the Qantas chairman he has nothing to lose, the brand is already badly damaged. The AFL hierarchy needs to concentrate on the game and not side issues that may conflict with players staff and supporters of the game.

As a young lad growing up and playing junior football in victoria I agree. We should leave it unnamed. There will never be agreement on any player and certainly not an administrator. Keep it neutral.

The first football match I ever went to was at the MCG. Melbourne V South Melbourne. My father took me there just so that I could see Ron Barrassi play. He was a schoolboy football hero. His contribution to our great game is enormous.
RIP Ron one of the legends of the game.

If you kick a football you are going to deviate to some degree as you come down on the opposite foot that is common. Maynard coud have put his arms out and turned on the tackle but as you say he wanted to hurt the player. I disagree with your analysis of Danger. He plays tough and is on the inside where there are a lot of bodies but he is mostly in and under. I think Tom Stewart plays on the edge more than Danger. Conversely if that had been Pendles and not Maynard I seriously doubt that collision if it ocurred would be as severe. Regardless if you hit someone in the head and they are out for 2 games the penalty should be the same. A blind eye seems to get turned around finals time with the supposedly bigger clubs. I seem to remember Cotchin getting off.
