I am a huge fan of Cricket and Football (Soccer). I am a huge fan of Manchester United and I love my great state of Victoria in the cricket. I am a bit of a traditionalist and I love my Test cricket much more than my ODI and T20 cricket. If pushed the Stars are the team to go for. Happy reading!

Perfect idea Ronan, if only CA awarded players more for staying away from the T20 Arena of money

David Warner can still dominate Test cricket

Kurtis Patterson was pretty solid in his time, and Renshaw to a certain extent technically, by no means the best, but better than those mentioned also in that sentence

I wouldn’t be a Test selector for quids

Maybe selectors could work out a system to weight test performances when it comes to picking?

Constantly reshuffling the batting order doesn’t work

Great article Stephen, definitely worth a shot, however, I would pick the team from Shield form, and then keep it stable, rather than keep last matches team.

Constantly reshuffling the batting order doesn’t work

Unfortunately England didn’t get another good opener to take off some pressure after 2011

Sir Alastair Cook Part 1: Rise of the chef

Incorrect, He is a MARSH!
A guaranteed selection case

The Australian cricket selectors are back to their ridiculous ways

Can agree with Siddle 1000%, but if we pick Marsh and he makes 30, well, he has gotten himself into the next summer no worries, then we will enter the perilous cycle of poor form, but enough to stay in the team.

How Siddle and Marsh could both play at the Oval

I have pre-ordered his book, hopefully can give it a read soon.

Sir Alastair Cook Part 1: Rise of the chef

Bit of satire with Boris I think?

Dancing in Bradman's shadow

Sometimes there will always be the best that never.
Burns seems to be in that category, though most notable of them all would David Hussey.
14,000 FC runs at 52! The selectors would kill for a middle order shield batsman like him now
EDIT:
Brad Hodge can be included also

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

Im giving him a chance for the home summer, but not next match, he has huge issues that need addressing ASAP

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

Main concern is the selectors trend of picking a new quick for the last test then never selecting him again. Chadd Sayers is a recent example

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

I did mention the bowlers in the third last line, and described the fielding as poor to begin with but a lot better. I do not have examples for you, but my I believed it to have happened in the first half of the decade, but my memory might fail me and it may have been from injury.

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

Good Article! Lots of valid points for the ECB to stew over

It's time for England to prioritise Test cricket again

The other thing to consider is that there are other openers in Australia, young Renshaw of whom I am a fan comes to mind as a future long-term opener. Burns would be a more temporary measure for a few years whilst others blood in shield, and I dare say same with Warner playing at home.

I am a fan of KP playing, but I would be tentative to get Pucovski in too earlier, personally I would like him to get a full season of shield out of the way

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

Touché Jeff

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

I am a traditionalist also, I despise T20 and I am only 17, however, I had to push out this article before I had my schedule too blocked up, so unfortunately I couldn’t wait another day before submitting it, Also had concerns about publication for a tight turn-around

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

I agree Maxine, however, the tight turnaround between the tests left me a little concerned about publishing times, and I am also not going to have the time to write an article for the next week or so, thus my thought to get it out ASAP.

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

I agree Jeff, I would be concerned about buggering around with Marnus too young, especially if we want a solid number 3 for years to come.

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

No doubt, but I would be cautious to bugger around with Marnus’ batting position too much. He is only young and barely established, so continuity at 3 would benefit him more than shoving him at opening to fit in an extra.
Just to toss out some left field ideas, Wade opening potentially? Huge gamble, so very much a hypothetical

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

Nor would they be wise to drop him for Marsh, a renowned hard hands player who often will struggle in England.

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

Unfortunately not, but no doubt Smith would be right up there with Bradman if he had of played all innings.
Funny thing is the second most runs in a series is Mark Taylor on about 860 for the 1989 Ashes in England, playing 6 test matches!

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

I dare say the selectors will go with Siddle over Marsh, purely because he is a much better bowling option and has a good enough batting technique. With our tail being relatively strong batting wise, I think Marsh is not a good option for an already weak middle order.

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

That would explain Cricket Australia often flying in other players more suited during a series, or selecting players from the county circuit. The squad of 17 go on tour, if the selectors feel they need another player, they will do so regardless. The XI is not limited to being selected from the 17 on tour. Strenuous circumstances can result in this occurring.
I also intended on being a bit sarcastic with the selection of Burns, I am well aware that it is never going to happen. I would also contest the “squad as a collective have played fantastic cricket”
Smith and Labuschagne have played fantastic as well as the bowlers throughout a lot of the series. The squad as a whole has not played fantastic cricket, especially batsman, the only reason we are in the series is Smith and Labuschagne and the radical increase in Australia’s fielding ability.

The XI Australia must pick at the Oval

Thats not a bad XI, some reasoning I may not agree with but I do like the XI
