I guess the idea was to have quality competition, not just have more numbers of teams participating. Hopefully with the right direction in 20 years time we could have 8 strong nations instead of the current 3. Because letsface it both Union and League could have 32 nations competing for a world cup right now if they wanted to, but the vast majority of games would be schoolboy level. at best Its just an idea for the future of the international game, not deriding the current state of it.

A fair dinkum international model

Yes, I used the term International Cup, because I don’t really like sports using the term ‘World Cup’ when the actually amount of participating countries is very small and doesn’t really represent the world. Soccer can claim a World Cup. Not entirely sure RL can even if they did have some expansion. Having said that the current names of existing tournaments doesn’t really keep me up at night, and I really enjoy RWC and the ICC Cricket World Cup when they come round.

I can never understand the reason my some people hate one of the rugby codes because they like the other one. I love both sports, and if Rugby League grew at the international level, I would not like Rugby Union less. Having 2 great games to watch in the Australian winter is better than one. Union doesn’t have to resent or fear League at an international level as long as they keep their own product strong. I have complete faith the IRB will do just that. Well, maybe not complete faith, but faith none-the-less.

Vinay, I must have been to young to remember Ross Edwards. I have just checked him out on cricinfo, and it looks like he only played the 3 test innings as an opener: Firstly a 170*, then he bagged a pair. He must have left quite an impression on you in that initial knock for him to edge out Slater, Taylor and co.

The best Ashes players of the last forty years

I completely agree with the idea of the abolition of runners, although I would like the contest to remain 11 on 11. Too bad if you lose a player to injury, a substitute fielder is enough of a replacement.

I’m not sure about the playing condition s in the rest of the cricketing world, but surely Test could be played over more time than 11am- 6(.30ish)pm. The first class model here of a minimum of 97 overs a day, is a great start. If we did want to have 4 day Test, I wouldn’t think it would be too much of a problem to extend playing hours by 90 minutes (9.30am start)and to propose a minimum over rate of say 110 or 115 per day. Of course, that would require the ICC actually enforcing over rate rules. A few years of strictly enforcing the rules, would quickly bring captians in to line.

How Test cricket can be improved: Part I

No, I wasn’t really trying to suggest that, Lolly. I personally would like to see some changes in the middle order. I don’t think North has done enough to hold his place. Also I think, that Hussey’s competitiveness has dropped off far too much in Tests. To be fair though his ODI form has still been good, so I’d leave him in that team.

But i was really trying to say that we have plentty of depth of talent to bring into the side. Unfortunately, I think the selectors may have left it a bit late coming into the Ashes to tinker. Steve Smith is a player of the future. Also we have some gun openers waiting in the wings if you want to move Watson down in the middle order. WIth Watson doing such a superb job at the top, again i think the selectors might be loathe to tinker with that formula.

Where do the Aussie cricketers go from here?

I completely agree Vinay that Sheffield Shield isn’t what it used to be, because all the top Australian players are almost never playing. That includes both Test and ODI squads. However, I still think it is the best domestic long format cricket competition in the world.
