The Broncos’ demise is multifactorial, and the problems won’t be going away without mass changes and accountability from multiple members of the organisation. As…
As a Brisbane Broncos fan, it would be great to see the club develop a genuine rivalry in the NRL. It makes sense to…
Well – no I don’t actually. I don’t think they are full of them. I think there is an appetite there though. I am talking about playing one game per year in each, not 12 rounds mate.
Christchurch’s most recent Manly attendance was 17000 (https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/104595314/manlys-loss-to-warriors-doesnt-dent-enthusiasm-for-christchurch)
Dunedin got 15000 to a pre season trial according to https://www.austadiums.com/stadiums/forsyth-barr-stadium/crowds
Those crowds are reasonable compared to Sydney figures. The concept is not supposed to be all about crowds anyway.
Fiji has the Silktails in RL so yes there must be some appetite for league there. Suva has hosted RU tests so they are able to hold large events safely and I think a game of NRL could be attractive for the Fiji Government.
It is one game after all. If a location didn’t work, there are plenty like Dubbo and Mudgee not on my list that could be swapped in. But I would aim for long term relationships

Yeah I was aware of Manly taking home games there as well. Manly could have CC and Roosters could have somewhere like Christchurch but would be less organic relationship for them (tried to keep as many logical or existing relationships as I could). Thanks for your feedback, I’m no expert on NSW regional affiliations

Potentially if this idea was to get off the ground in short term, Souths would still be encouraged to take a game there. But I have Perth as home to the eventual 18th team in my table so no need for another club to take it under its wing.

Hot take. You do you man, that seems entirely based on opinion. His name is Kurt by the way, Luke is his brother and played in the halves.
A couple of things – he was selected at back row in Origin last year originally, and then was moved to centre at last minute due to injury (I think to Brenko Lee from memory). So it wasn’t like he couldn’t get a spot at second row. He has filled that hole(!) since.
We also don’t know the value of his contract. If we have picked him up for south of 400k and he plays most games in the next few years then that is a great signing imo.
Kurt Capewell joins Broncos as part of rebuild
That’s my point though. If you are going to base it on heresay or opinion, it seems just as valid to look at people on a train (neither would be suitable metrics).
Didn’t know about the population difference, but I would’ve thought North stretches further out than Southside and so could encapsulate more people (who may consider themselves Northside but may not be in city limits). Anyway it doesn’t really matter, just think it’s one of those things that will never and can never be measured
New Jets NRL bid could soar above rivals
I wonder of the Brisbane Jets swimming club will have anything to say on the name. Ironically they are right next door to the Easts Tigers. What if Easts encourage them to pursue legal action?
New Jets NRL bid could soar above rivals
I’ve been saying this for years, I reckon a lot of Brisbane residents would identify with the name Moreton Bay or Moreton as it’s pretty well known as a location around here. It could be like our version of Golden State where the name encompasses more than just a city
New Jets NRL bid could soar above rivals
This is completely arbitrary and is just like your opinion, man. I’m not saying there are more of us to the North but if packed trains leaving the stadium are anything to go by, the Northside brings a lot of fans. It seems pretty even to me
New Jets NRL bid could soar above rivals
Sure Scott. There are 2 teams each already from Sydney and Melbourne but another team from Brisbane doesn’t even get mentioned. Based on population size and success of the Bulls this should happen if there is expansion. I’m pretty tired of Southeners considering Gold Coast to be just another suburb of Brisbane but even GC is a far bigger market (and less saturated with cricket) than Geelong
The BBL needs fewer matches – but more teams
Haha fair enough on the commenting.
I think Moreton Bay Dolphins would work. Council area population is about 450,000 but you’re not setting it up for the people now, it’s 20 years time you should be looking for. Moreton Bay is a name that historically fits and represents all of Brisbane. Even if it doesn’t attract all brisbanites (this could be worked with by the media), having grown up on the Northside (and what I would consider Bayside), most people around here either are fans of the Dolphins or have played for them or their feeders so it would be a natural fit to go for them (or if they currently don’t, for their children to)
Brisbane's second NRL team will only succeed on passion
Very well written article, Tom. I feel like your points have gone over a bunch of these commenters’ heads.
For all the problems of expansion, player quality is not one of them
Yeah that’s what I was alluding to above. Feel like the NRL could really play off that history
Brisbane's second NRL team will only succeed on passion
It could grow to become a bit like Bay Area is a synonym for San Francisco and Oakland.
Brisbane's second NRL team will only succeed on passion
If you’re going to talk like you know the geography, at least get the spelling right – it’s Moreton not Morton 😛
Moreton Bay is the name of the (massive) council area that Redcliffe and North Lakes are part of. That’s who the name is trying to represent. It is a fast growing region. But if you get a few Bayside Brisbane residents identifying with the name, that is a bonus.
Brisbane's second NRL team will only succeed on passion
Still better than the Brisbane Bombers

I agree that the Dolphins bid is the best of the lot. Their wealthy leagues club also owns real estate like the block of shops outside the stadium that has tenants like Coles. Even a pandemic won’t stop them making money so they would be better off than some poor Sydney clubs who already play in the NRL.
I don’t mind the name River City Dolphins, but think I still prefer Moreton Bay Dolphins or just Moreton Dolphins. Moreton can represent the whole region including the council area, suburbs on the bay like Sandgate and Wynnum and even further out like West Moreton district of health. After all, Brisbane was originally called the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement.

I agree with your assessment of Peter Nolan. He doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, and his appointment smacks of nepotism by Bennett (which I think is Tallis’ point about him being just a glassy). I don’t think any other football Chiefs are signing TPJ and Lodge before signing Fifita.
Even though I agree Seibold is not solely responsible, some of the defensive structures and attacking plays have been abysmal to non existent. I think an under 13s coach would have more structures and set plays. I think it has also got to the point where Seibold has to go for his own mental health and wellbeing
Dear Brisbane Broncos, the coach isn't the problem
My team:
1 Ponga
2 Coates
3 Gagai
4 Mbye
5 Feldt
6 Munster
7 Cherry-Evans
8 McGuire
9 Friend
10 Papalii
11 Fifita/SuA if Fifita still unfit
12 Kaufusi
13 Arrow
14 Hunt
15 Carrigan
16 Welch
17 Oates if fit/ Collins
My Queensland State of Origin team
Even more appalling was the possibility of Lodge being captain in the first place

Exactly Muzz. Improve culture and you will improve effort which will improve defense. Improve defense and you can afford to play the slow game and not be frantic in attack (as we have been) and you can defend the odd dropped ball when attacking
So everything improves

He didn’t rule it out when asked about it, saying he has a great relationship with Kevvie having worked with him at Melb and in Origin. The Broncs have to do something or they will lose support fast
I am disgusted and ashamed to be a Broncos fan
Exactly. I don’t think anyone would be too disappointed, even with this inexperienced team if it at least looked like they were making an effort

You can actually read can’t you Rob? The first half of your comment makes it sound like I was carrying on. Not once did I say it wasn’t fair. I think I was pretty objective and definitely not crying a river
And the second half of your comment you basically sum up most of the points in the article
I am disgusted and ashamed to be a Broncos fan
Oh sh’t knew I’d forgotten someone. Ofa to bench for Bullemor and Carrigan to 13. I like Coates but originally toyed with milf at FB in which case Isaako would be on one wing and Oates the other. Then I shifted back and forgot to put Coates back in (probably for Farnworth, who should probably be dirty to not get selected). Kahu I believe is back from injury, I’m talking a few weeks anyway and I specifically said I am going for a balance of experience and explosiveness

Yeah I also considered Geelong for the Storm. The stadium may be more NRL ready than Hobart also. But any Geelong RL fans probably already travel to AAMI park for games
