Exactly! The hypocrisy of having the aforementioned players in the HoF but not Cousins is what gets me.

It’s about time Ben Cousins is in the Hall of Fame

Exactly, to your opinion. What about Gary Ablett snr who took illegal drugs during his career? Or Wayne Carey who definitely brought the game into disrepute?

I understand that that’s your opinion ok. But, if the AFL don’t think he should be stripped of his awards, which it looks like they don’t, then clearly he should be eligible.

It’s about time Ben Cousins is in the Hall of Fame

Very true, amazing to think he could have been even better than he was without the addiction.
Cheers!

I suspect that you’re correct in that the AFL probably won’t induct him until he is back on his feet. But if that time never comes would you ever be supportive of his induction?

No doubt the drug testing system at that period of time was far from perfect but I feel it’s too far to deny him due to people having suspicions.

Thanks for that article, it was a great read! I completely agree that WCE let themselves down, the fans down, and in my opinion they let the players down. I also don’t doubt that at the beginning of preseason he would’ve been unfit, he spent the whole time taking drugs haha.

I really like what you’ve said here…perhaps it is best to induct at a time where he’d be in a good headspace.
Cheers!

What you’re saying is correct, but where is the evidence that he took it while playing in the first place? He never failed a drug test.
Cheers!

Cheers Jack! I agree that they should be judged on their footballing ability first and foremost and there are heaps of questionable characters already in the HoF

It’s about time Ben Cousins is in the Hall of Fame

I can see where you’re coming from, I knew my opinion wouldn’t exactly be popular. But considering the AFL do recognise all of his achievements still that it would be hypocritical of them to then deny a HoF honour?
Cheers!

It absolutely does Adam! Cheers!

I do agree that West Coast dealt with the whole situation very poorly

I know they aren’t the same but surely punching someone in the jaw is a criminal act? I wasn’t trying to say whose was worse, more acknowledging that there are questionable characters in the HoF

It’s about time Ben Cousins is in the Hall of Fame

I respect your opinion as I knew mine wouldn’t be popular, but from what I’ve heard he was that he trained the hardest out of everyone and was actually extremely fit…although I wouldn’t be surprised if that fell away towards the end.
As for your last point, I do agree that the club dealt with the whole situation very poorly.

Hi Mountie, I do believe I stated in the article that some players left as children and had no say in the matter…

Devon Conway is yet another talented South African playing for a different country

Once again I do agree with you that playing for England did allow him to play more tests during that period, we should also remember that his international career ended prematurely due to mental health issues, not lack of ability.

With a different topic I might not be so responsive, but this one seems to bring the passion out of people haha, cheers mate.

I seem to have underestimated the passion for this topic hahaha. I love the debate though and I’m happy to be proved wrong

Hi Gee, your point is very true but this isn’t a one-off for Conway, he is currently averaging 75 in ODIs and 59 in t20.

Hi Kalva, I do agree with you that some of the players mentioned above might not have been walk-up starts for South Africa. However, I do believe that these players would have made the national squad far deeper in quality and would certainly have improved the domestic league had they hung around. That’s not CSA’s fault necessarily and I wasn’t trying to blame anyone, more just exploring why they may have decided to leave to play different leagues. Hopefully now that Kolpak contracts are gone, the problem will be fixed. Saying that Trott played ‘only 50 tests’ is a little bit unfair, that is far more than most. And while Conway is still young in his international career, a 7th placed South Africa would probably play him in a heartbeat at the moment.
I really enjoy these discussions so I do appreciate your input 🙂

Hi Patrick, I appreciate your input as you have backed up your argument well, however I didn’t explicitly say that Conway left due to the quota in place, rather stated that, in my opinion, it could be a reason for some players leaving to play in another country. I’m not resting the whole blame on the quota, I stated also that same players did leave the country as children. I was not aware that South Africa meet the quota in the way that you stated but surely when the president speaks up after two missed games, there is serious pressure on the board.
I do appreciate your input Patrick and I loved the way you put forward your argument 🙂

The apartheid extended further than just a quota but I certainly see your point in that it can easily be seen as double-standards.

Hi Lara, I think cricket always has an element of luck and I don’t doubt that was the case here. What I was pointing out, or trying to at least, was that what he did is an unfortunately common occurrence for South Africa and exploring why. I had no intention of attacking South African cricket or the players.

Devon Conway is yet another talented South African playing for a different country

No doubt South African cricket has its issues but with the quota, it is effectively out of the board’s hands. It has far too large a political impact and there is, as far as I’m aware, many people in South Africa who feel as though the quota is justified. The article discusses the reasons why these players leave, not whether it is wrong or right.
