You would have had roar secret agents hunt you down with a title like that. 😱

Allan Border's greatest knocks in defeat

Yep. Australia’s win in Melbourne 1992-93 was only their second win in a non-dead rubber against the West Indies since WSC, the other being at the same ground in 81-82.

Allan Border's greatest knocks in defeat

The one time you want them to amend the title, they don’t. 😔

Allan Border's greatest knocks in defeat

During the 1980s, West Indies played two series in Pakistan, winning one and drawing one and played two in India with the same results. Pakistan were strong then, India were not, but the one test they lost in India was due to 16 wickets by shooting star leg spinner Hirwani, who faded away very soon after.

Another roarer a couple of years ago, forget who, dissected Headley’s career and revealed that he made a lot of his big scores at home against 2nd and 3rd England XIs and he certainly didn’t dominate Grimmett out here in 1930-31. Not saying he wasn’t a good batsman, after all he made more than 50% ofnhis team’s score in more than 50% of his test innings. The other thing about Headley is 7 half tons in 13 innings on rain affected pitches, Bradman a mere 1 in 14.

Haynes made test tons in England, New Zealand and Australia, not sure if he made one in India in 1987-88. Albeit the two in Australia were in low intensity to minimal pressure 3rd innings situations, one a lost cause, the other bossing the game with a critical lead already.

You would leave out a 4th match winning paceman in favour of an average stock spinner? Wouldn’t it be better to stick to the four pronged pace attack and let Sobers be the stock spinner? Richards was also a handy change spinner.

West Indies all-time Test XI

Nah, knighthoods are just cringe worthy and I will only ever refer to players by the names they went by.

West Indies all-time Test XI

That is such an important consideration with keepers and so many fans are oblivious to it. It always makes me groan when people pick Kumar Sanggakara as keeper in all-star teams when his impact with the bat dwindled greatly in the tests that he kept in roughly 1/3 of his 134 tests. Gilchrist’s impact with the bat when keeping is much greater than Sanggakara’s.

West Indies all-time Test XI

Yeah. Hughes got a broken foot from Andy Roberts I think and batted with a runner. Neither Chappell nor Hughes fielded and Rod Marsh was acting captain when Australia fielded.

Allan Border's greatest knocks in defeat

You confuse lost cause with losing cause. All lost causes are losing causes but not all losing causes are lost causes.

Allan Border's greatest knocks in defeat

I think Taylor would have. Waugh was pretty good but we weren’t any more invincible under him than we were under Ponting up to 2004-07 – in test or one day cricket.

West Indies all-time Test XI

I would actually call 5 wickets a relatively comfortable win in the end.

Allan Border's greatest knocks in defeat

Yeah it’s a reasonable point that at 4 for +195 going into final day they may have fancied their hopes if building a lead too large to be chased down for a 1-0 win. Prolly not realistic though against bowlers who always kept a 5th gear in reserve for when badly needed – being the last day of their while tour, the windies bowlers could easily afford to throw everything they had at us.

Greg Chappell was never going to be any use with a broken hand, otherwise he wouldn’t have dropped down the order from no 4 to 7.

Allan Border's greatest knocks in defeat

Opposition easily tougher in Taylor era. By the time Waugh became captain in 1999 the west Indies were in decline and by the following year were downright minnows. South Africa and Pakistan in three series all up in 2001 and 02 were also clearly not as strong as in the five series they played against Australia between 1994 and 98.

West Indies all-time Test XI

Lloyd is to Mark Taylor as Richards is to Steve Waugh when talking captains.

West Indies all-time Test XI

I actually don’t think Haynes would have been that crash hot in a weak team.

West Indies all-time Test XI

Sobers was not a great captain and didn’t particularly like the job, same as Tendulkar. If Lloyd doesn’t play then Richards is captain.

West Indies all-time Test XI

I don’t agree Australia came close to winning in 1981-82. At no time were Australia in a position to win the 2nd test in Sydney and on a flat Adelaide track in the 3rd, 240 odd to set the West Indies was never gonna be enough. Very fine performance by Border in that game though, don’t get me wrong.

163 in Melbourne against India in 1985-86 would also have been in defeat but for rain on final day.

Allan Border's greatest knocks in defeat

Yeah I agree, but Chanderpaul is a grafting technician so can’t really be compared with a brutal stroke player like Lloyd.

Lloyd would bat 5 and Sobers 6 and Richards would be vc.

I wouldn’t have both Garner and Ambrose as too similar. I would have Roberts instead of Garner, but Garner comes in if Ambrose gets injured while Hall can come in if either Roberts or Holding get injured.

Found what I am looking for!!

'Pure class': Maxwell run chase leads Australia to Sri Lankan victory

And AFL around 2000 I see. 👍

'Pure class': Maxwell run chase leads Australia to Sri Lankan victory

Correct projection: 9 for 220 off 47.4 gets projected to a maximum overs total of 222. Then the par target for 43 overs is 190 with VBO 8. Par target 7 for 190. Above par targets are 0 for 175 1 for 178 2 for 180 3 for 182 4 for 184 5 for 186 6 for 188. Below par targets are 8 for 199 and 9 for 218.

Injury scare for Smith as Aussies lose in Sri Lanka

Yes, if 275 is regarded as par for Finch’s era, I will always sign anyone off if the target is 5-10 less, as long as they have 5 or more overs to spare.

The one where next top score was 26 is not so clear cut. I would have to view the scoresheet, as it could well have been a case of Australia never being in the hunt and therefore Finch batting with no real pressure given that defeat was a surety at all times. Aravinda de Silva played such an innings at the 2003 world cup.

Can you give me links to all of Finch’s odi tons? Mark Waugh’s, Adam Gilchrist’s, Ricky Ponting’s, Matthew Hayden’s and David Warner’s are all on Wikipedia, and I know in my head all the necessary details for all 10 collective odi tons for Greg Chappell and Dean Jones.

It seems like I am slightly ill-informed about Finch in above par run chases. It will actually raise his ranking alongside those other players in my book, so I would be eternally grateful for any more info you could provide.

'Pure class': Maxwell run chase leads Australia to Sri Lankan victory

No, a great win, no question about. An exception though, as there have been very few occasions of chasing that score or higher entirely within the final day.

Pope and Root hit tons in England fightback

I seriously can’t look at it all right now but I surely will tomorrow. Thanks for your effort.

'Pure class': Maxwell run chase leads Australia to Sri Lankan victory

I don’t expect anyone to pull off miracles all the time. I am also not anti big maxy. I am definitely anti people who have no tolerance for Mark Waugh not averaging a superficial 50 in test cricket. So far I like you. 😁

'Pure class': Maxwell run chase leads Australia to Sri Lankan victory

I did read something else: I rate 275-300 as the par score for Maxwell’s era but we can surely talk about that.
