Agree, DB. And to answer why they are running second is Sonny bill Williams and what he has brought to the team, pure and simple. He’s ahd his go. But I’m wrapt he was picked again because i’m a queenslander

All I am saying is give Pearce a chance

Yep, so if we were in state of origin fighting he’d win but when it comes to footy he is a better fighter than SOO front rower 🙂

Maroons front row stocks dwindling for Origin

🙂 @the eye, what goes around comes around, harrigan saved you guys when he missed a blatant knock on years ago when gordy got sent off for calling him a cheat . It all works out in the wash. So we are all square on the harrigan issue now.

I was worried about this year until Daley came out and chose Pearce lol

Maroons front row stocks dwindling for Origin

I remember a few years ago Brett White gobbed off that Petro and Price were to old. From memory he got a smashed broken nose in the first hit up and QLD won the series, then Benny Elias gobbed off that Lockyer was to old and guess what they won again. Jeez the debate going on here is great and there is a lot of feeling. So there should be IT’S ORIGIN time lol 🙂 Plus one side has been on the wrong side 7 years str8

Maroons front row stocks dwindling for Origin

Well we could go on and on but the point is missed. This golden team doesn’t have recent scarring from there , so it is a valid point I make .

Same as when the blues were dominant in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Everyone was saying Lang Park was a fortress well it wasn’t for awhile. To say that Queensland struggle at home bush was a pointless argument given the recent playing record there. The stats I put up are hard core evidence this era have no fear. We only have to win one there this year. Given the blues record there since 05 is not good and our record down there is awesome since 05, I know where my money would be

Maroons front row stocks dwindling for Origin

Nice article Curtis,

But I have to take you up on your claim “it’s no secret the maroons struggle at homebush ” remark.

06 – lost by a point
07 – Won 2nd game and only game there and series
08 – Under pressure won 3rd game and series
09 – Won 2nd game and only game and series
10 – Won both games at said venue 1 st and 3RD games
11 – lost only game there
12 – lost only game there

No disrespect but I don’t think that is a record of a team who is frightened of the venue anymore. 5 wins out of the last 8 games played there is pretty darn good
Yes pre this golden era it was a graveyard for the Queenslanders but with pretty much the same players in key positions coming down this year, I don’t believe it holds the same aura it used too. However the last two years the blues have won there i’ll give them that.

Cheers

Very true, I think when the storm picked him up from North Devils in Brisbane he was a second rower with a pretty hard reputation

Wayne Bennett for coach of the Immortals

Hard to argue with your points there Chris :)………..In my honest opinion the Brisbane comp was a hard talented one.Plus we had a smaller pool of players to draw from. I think they just lacked the professional touch that the likes of Gibson and co brought to the table with coaching. Bennett made up for that in spades

Wayne Bennett for coach of the Immortals

Cheers, it’s a very very good in depth look at coaching etc

Wayne Bennett for coach of the Immortals

He played A grade in the brisbane comp, like most other players who came from Queensland then played for Australia pre Origin days. Rod Morris, Greg Veivers, Mitch Brennan, Gene Miles, Wally Lewis etc etc . It was the pretty close to the same quality as the Sydney comp

Wayne Bennett for coach of the Immortals

The question needs to be asked how would the big three have gone under a different coach with different game plans and styles ???
Would they have flourished under a Brian Smith, or gone backwards re development. Would Cronk’s career stalled if he was coached by Ricky Stuart ???, Gus Gould hinted at this very subject when he was having his public spat with Stuart, he thought that halfbacks who have played under Stuart had gone backwards or words to that affect.

Would Smith and Slater have really come along if other coaches had been there. We will never know but it’s worth considering instead of the old mantra of “if he didn’t have this or that player” then he wouldn’t have went any good.

Cheers

Wayne Bennett for coach of the Immortals

Great article Benjamin.I thought you might find the following story interesting, it is a thesis done by a professor on NRL coaches.

Wayne Bennett for coach of the Immortals

I’ve mentioned this before. One Alfie Langer was blooded when he was only 21 and this was against Wayne Bennetts wishes too. Paul Vautin stuck up for him as well as Tommy Raudonikis. Their thinking was, if he’s good enough he’s old enough. Now we all know how that panned out. He wasn’t even playing in the Sydney comp then either. So why is the thinking around reynolds so different. Poor old Mullins wasn’t even allowed one bad game in his first.

What did Bob Macarthy do, sacked him and that’s what ruined his confidence not the fact he had an ordinary game. Langer didn’t set the wolrd on fire in the first game, but by the 3rd game he was fitting in. I remember his interview after the first game and he said I hope that shuts all the doubters up. Lewis didn’t want him in te team either nor Gene Miles.

Daley insists Pearce will be NSW halfback

Yep I agree, my thoughts about different names being thrown about and the cupboard being bare was purely regarding the halves, people are mentioning Soward, carney,Reynolds, mullens, maloney etc etc the list goes on and on .

Why is Mitchell Pearce guaranteed an Origin spot?

No disrespect to this issue or NSW supporters, but if you read right through all of the responses it really does show how confusing and hard Daleys job will be again this year with the blues. So many different names and positions thrown up really highlight how bare the cupboard really is.

I agree 100% with Ryans assessment that Pierce just isn’t SOS standard and just playing the loyalty card for the sake of it it wrong, but hey i’m over the moon he is the halfback again. They played that loyalty card with Ennis as well for 3 years and I was over the moon with that because Farah scared me to bits with his talent.

Why is Mitchell Pearce guaranteed an Origin spot?

Hi Ryan,

Totally agree with you and as a Queenslander I’m over the moon they are going to pick him again. I won’t go over the reasons why you’e so right about it all other than to say Allan Langer was deemed to small by one Wayne Bennett and Bennett had to accept him through gritted teeth.

Paul Vautin actually stuck up for Langer against Bennett in a team meeting. He wasn’t even playing in the NRL back then, he was still playing for ipswich in the Brisbane cup. Bennetts thinking was Laurie Spina was a better pick because he thought Langer was to young, too small and too inexperienced. HOW WRONG WAS HE.

Like people have said if you’re good enough you’re old enough. Langer held his own in the first game anjd wasn’t dropped from panicking , the rest is history. That’s where Queenslands loyalty laid that year 1987. NSW dropped poor old Mullens after one game and their thinking stunk, what did they expect a “man of the match performance” str8 off the bat for christs sake. Being dropped would’ve rocked him to the core. Now they are going the opposite for opposite sake. Pearce has had a fair go and it hasn’t panned out, running the loyalty flag for the sake of it is just music to my queensland ears

Peter Wallace had a blinder in Bellamy’s first game as coach and I remember Gould mouthing off “that’s why he was picked as coach”. 3 series later he was on the origin coach scrap heap.

The reasons Bennett is mouthing off about reynolds is hypocritical to say the least when it comes to history and his reasons why Langer wasn’t ready either

Why is Mitchell Pearce guaranteed an Origin spot?

So does that mean sportsmen like George Best don’t ever ever qualify because he was a drug addict as well.

My best 20 sportsmen of all time

Not a bad team . Gr8 for a debate or two or three lol. I’d have Ian Chappell in there instead of Greg just for his captaincy. Cream on the cake imo. Interesting comment from Kepler Wessells about Ian Chappell in the paper where he said one of his highlights of wolrd series was playing under him.

Cheers
