Happy to take your word for the quality of the Eels players in the NSW Cup, so I guess it comes down to those who manage the recruitment & retention. No doubt Brad Arthur has some say in that, but there has to be others who are pretty poor at their jobs if they can’t see what you can.

Arthur chance to survive: Blue and golden opportunity for besieged Eels coach without star duo

I’ve listened to the BBC podcast where a reporter named Stephen Schemilt is doing the interview and this answer comes across as a bit of tongue in cheek from Lyon. He was asked whether his personality was missed and he gave a vanilla answer then came out with this. I think this is another case of “nothing to see here, move on”.

Completely off the track but aren’t there 13 star signs? I saw something about Ophiuchus the other day? Given your knowledge and my ignorance on this, would value your opinion.

This was part of a podcast interview Lyon did for the BBC. The questions were leading to these “what if” scenarios and Lyon simply answered

Warren Smith looking foolish? He spends most games sounding foolish, so nothing new there.

I guess if the game died last night, that’ll be the last we see of Fatty!

NRL News: Latrell returns a changed man - Hornby, 'Our game is finished' fumes Fatty at Bunker after 'awful' penalty

This article rightly points out that all teams could field a XIII capable of making the finals, assuming no injuries or suspensions, but Clubs need to be thinking about a 30 man roster, not their best 13 or 18, especially in a year like this one, with so many injuries to key players.

Arthur has a point about injuries cruelling his team because his overall squad is not first grade quality, whereas Penrith, the Broncos and Storm are much stronger across the board.

If the Parra management realise that, Arthur shouldn’t be sacked if the Eels lose more tough games. If anything, the people doing the recruiting and retention should get the bullet because they didn’t build a good, all-round squad.

Poor Fatty. It must have been so traumatic not being able to talk about something because it was so awful, that he had to talk about it.

Damien Cook needs lessons in how to talk a good game. He reckons Souths can win a premiership
“because the squad is all still there. And at the moment, there’s not a lot of luck on our side.”

Sorry Damien, but even allowing for the injuries to some key players, this is not a good squad, not close to being good enough to win a premiership and luck doesn’t come into it much when teams are putting 40 or 50 points on you.

Completely agree. Most teams don’t need a bloke who plays 5 great games a year and is MIA for the rest.

Yeah, but what’s missing is the uber high paid forward bludger! 😂

He’d look all right in a jumper with a Red V on it as well, wouldn’t he?

Be nice if a team like the Dragons manage to sign him up instead of either the Panthers or Roosters

He’d probably fit in better with Robbo at the Roosters, wouldn’t he?

Ricky’s very good at talking them into being underdogs, Geoff. A bit like every Maroons coach since John McDonald

double figures for sure. I thought O’Brien or Brad Arthur would be the first to go.

Adam Voges had great numbers at Test level, but we all know he was no match winner, certainly not on a regular basis. I think Pandya’s the same. Both will have good days and you would certainly know more about those than I, but all up, I don’t think he inspires the sort of concern in opposition teams that he should.

You could always plonk plenty on the Bunnies, Bernie, to make them favourites. 😁

The Roar's NRL expert tips and predictions, Round 10: Surprise results everywhere, not just on Dargons jerseys

Certainly that was my impression from the pundits, who only chose two teams differently in the whole round. Injuries to key players didn’t help some results

There’s still a lot of short priced favourites in this round, including the Dargons against the Bunnies. Who’d have thought when the season started, that they’d be $1.50 favourites against Souths at $2.75?

The Roar's NRL expert tips and predictions, Round 10: Surprise results everywhere, not just on Dargons jerseys

The Clubs are the direct beneficiaries of any work they, the NRL or the ARL do to promote the sport, so I’d have thought it’s in their best interests to spread the word far & wide.

They don’t have to do it during the season, or at least, not to remote locations, but a visit in the off-season from a high profile player is always well received. Over the years, I’ve seen this happen dozens of times with the AFL, yet only a handful of times with Lague players.

Panthers' plea for player development discounts will fall on deaf ears - and Fifita is not the answer to their JFH dilemma

I’ve no idea because I’m not well versed with that aspect of the Tax Acts. I do know they make for tough reading, so presume there’s no straightforward answer to what can and can’t be claimed as an expense.

I suspect both are being chosen on reputation more than results, Arnab. Certainly Rohit is/was a talented opening bat in Tests but at 37, his best years are behind him, even in that format, ( I thought he struggled in the England series against a pretty underwhelming attack). As you’ve said, he’s hardly set the world on fire when batting in the easiest position in the T20 format.

As for Pandya, I don’t recall him ever playing a statement game at international level with either bat or ball. In fairness, he’s suffered a lot of injuries but in between, has been no better than okay.

It’s always really instructive to understand people’s backgrounds and I’m sure Madge is well aware of this with all the players he will be considering for SOO1. I don’t think there’s any doubt Hynes is up to playing at SOO level, but the real issue is whether he fits into the Michael Maguire game plan?

For mine, I think Hynes could play because the Blues struggled mightily with a single point of attack (Cleary) in the first two games last year. Everything worked through him, the Maroons knew that, so all they had to do was shut him down and the Blues attack was stifled.

I’m actually more interested in seeing how Burton goes against the Panthers. He’s the obvious challenger to Hynes and plays the left side of the field very well. If he has a good game this round, it could bring him seriously into contention.

I hope for Hynes sake he gets a chance to show what he can do as a Blues player. It’s great he’s playing such good footy that puts him in contention.

Why Nicho Hynes' Origin story makes him a must-pick for NSW

Looks lik a round to pick the home teams.

On paper, there should be some really good games this round, but so many teams have injuries to key players. Hopefully more aren’t added to the tally.

I think this game will be a whole lot closer than many think. Your boys are playing with plenty of confidence and have nothing to lose by really trying to stick it to Penrith.

I’d be very surprised if this turned into a thrashing.

It would be useful to actually read these directives to see exactly what the NRL is saying to the Clubs.

As with most things rugby league, this sounds like it’s going to open to wide interpretation, unless Abdo and co have made it clear who can talk with the refs and (generally) what players can say.

Hopefully Teddy starts early and she “reminds” of the directive by marching his team a few times.

NRL News: Fifita picks his new club after dropping Titans bombshell, clubs warned whingeing players will be binned

I just want to pick up on one point Paul made;

“Unfortunately it is not in each NRL club’s interests to plough money into a far-flung location and it would likely lessen the value of a club the next time an owner puts one on the market.”

He then goes on to say the ARL Commission needs to do more “to fund the areas outside the NRL”, but surely all areas in Australia fall under the NRL? And what about New Zealand, given the Warriors presence in the competition?

This is also not just about funding but about building relationships and having an identifiable presence. These are the sorts of things Clubs are far better capable of doing. They have the talent scouts and above all the players, who young players can relate to.

I’d also not be too concerned about businesses being hard to sell because one aspect is loss-making. The convoluted Laws which make up the Australian Taxation system will likely mean most or all of that loss can be used as a tax deduction
