Has to be Tony, how sad if he takes a loss. He was primed to have a much deserved genuine crack Khabib but now one slip up against a 2 in 4 yet super dangerous Gaethje.

Who wins of Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje at UFC 249?

Its simple. The various media’s are just protecting their investments. Little respect is given to football because it does little benefit to the investments media has made in buying rights to NRL or AFL.

If tomorrow we woke up and News Limited and the FFA agreed to a record rights deal greater than AFL and League than all of sudden everything would be flipped on its head. Dailly telegraph would have 8 pages of A-league and Socceroos and 1 page each to AFL and NRL grand final. Channel nine would have live games all weekend supported by football game show and analysis shows.

Media not to blame for A-League's struggles

If FTA was possible – The FFA should immediatley add something to the A-league to rebuild excitment. I would like to see goal-line technology. THe publicity nationally and world wide would be huge and the A-league would go down in history as being the first to use this innovation.

Is free-to-air best for the A-League?

FTA would only work if the package was right. That is A-league etc becomes part of the total focus of the whole channel like NRL is for channel 9. SBS and maybe One are the only two channels that could be trusted with the rights. SBS has the football culture already and this would only improve.

Is free-to-air best for the A-League?

Paper/fox news only go AFL/NRL first because thats their biggest investment. If we woke up tomorrow and FFA landed a new deal with FOX and say Channel 9 bigger than what AFL/NRL get then all of sudden A-league gets 6 pages while AFL/NRL get 1 each.

How to save the struggling A-League

Using the word investment is in terms of investing in shares – its a gamble but one day those shares might be worth something. If clive builds the Manchest United of Australia than maybe the club will be worth many millions more than what it is now to banks and international investors and sponsors that will want to be part of the club.

Gold Coast United are A-League's biggest mistake

THe point is Clive is losing money running the club. By cost cutting he is stil losing money. If he continues this way will he keep losing money? Yes, will he ever make money this way? No. So if he wants a football club that maybe worth something he needs to invest in it and hope the investment can turn into some equity. Its a massive gamble but surely he knew that if he is so clever.

Gold Coast United are A-League's biggest mistake

Football people to run the game is key, i think. As for Tasmania and canberra etc I think A-League 2 should be looked at with a model that can work with a small salary cap no marquees and average crowds of 2k-5k. It would also then create the FA cup competition and allow our youngstes to move up from youth league to A-league 2 and allow other youngsters to take their place in youth league – developing twice as many players and creating more pathways to professional football. Also teams that come last or can not afford A-league can be relegated to rebuild instead of just disappering. The model could look like this:
A-league 2 – based on avg 2k – 5k crowds, no marquees and smaller salary cap (FFA grant covers salary cap – based on new tv deal), Premiers promoted – grand finalist plays off against 2nd last in A-league to see who stays up:
1. Freemantle or 2nd Perth team
2. 2nd Adelaid team
3. Tasmania
4. Christchurch
5. South Coast
6. Canberra
7. West Sydney
8. Darwin

How to save the struggling A-League

What does Clive want? He has a football club that is losing money. whats the point of restricting how much you lose when your going to lose anyway. By capping the crowds does he think he can make a profit? The only way he can make any money out this club is by investing in the club. That is pump in the real dollars – marquees, guest players promotions, advertising etc. Do what ever it takes to get 20k crowds even if juniors get in free. Instead of being hated become loved for embracing the community. Invest in a marquee coach and admin. Invest in grassroots. Develop a production line of talent in which young players can be sold for $1million a pop. Create this positive hype and the sponsors will come knocking as will Asia. Then you might have club thats making money or at least worth more than what it is now.

Gold Coast United are A-League's biggest mistake

People must remember that the Titans have rised from the ashes of many failled attemps by Rugby League to have a team on the Gold Coast. Lets not forget the failure of Tweed Seagulls, Gold Coast Giants, Gold Coast Chargers before the Titans. These clubs failed with max promotion and support from media with free to air tv prime time. Plus they have a league comp going on 100 years of culture and QLD has been a Rugby League area. Titans have gone out and spent big on promotion and in return have a great support base from fans and the comercial side however they to are now cutting back their spending. I believe a football club can flourish in this area.

Before GUFC I watched Queensland Roar play Sydney FC in a pre-season game at Carrara stadium in the pooring rain – there were 7000 people attending. Not a bad crowd i thought, imagine when the Gold Coast has their own team. This is where the club has failed. The Gold Coast community needs to own the club or made to feel like its their club. The A-leaague has a couples of years culture behind it GUFC has one year, so the club need to build the community culture and get them to the games. There are thousands of registered players (so many more than the other codes) in the region so why arent they supporting the team of their code? Clive needs to hire football people to operate the club – send administrators to see how it is done in Europe, MLS and J-League or recruit people with proven success in football – not AFL or Union or League. Why arent the youth League games before the senior game? Its crazy to have them on a different day. The youth players are the locals the future heroes, their the connection to the grassroots that the club needs to support the club.

GUFC got in based on Clive having the dough to support the club. But why is Palmer happy to sit their and watch the club die when he can spend a little of his billions to promote the club. Where are the TV adds? AFL has adds for their club and they dont even play yet. It’s school holidays, every school kid should be invited to a coaching clinic where they get a free ticket with a paying adult. A player should of been present at every end of year presentation for local football clubs with a free ticket for every player. This may cost a bit (not to clive) but each person with a free ticket will bring some one who pays and then buys food, drinks and merchandise and might come back next time. The players need to be every where because there is no free to air TV to build their profile. Every saturday at local junior football matches their should be player signing autographs and promoting the next match giving away prizes. The players can’t be local heroes if know one knows them.

Clive can turn things around – he has alienated fans so far but if he changes and delivers what everyone originally thought he would then GUFC will easily average crowds as big if not bigger than the Titans in time. He needs to do what the owners of Glory and Phoenix are doing by investing their money and promoting their teams beyond what the FFA are doing.

Gold Coast United are A-League's biggest mistake

The AFL team has promoted and marketed their team earning intrest from the community, while into their 2nd season GCUFC has again done little. The AFL team is losing moning and will lose money but the AFL don’t care, they pay what ever it cost to get big crowds because they can. GCUFC can get average crowds of 15-20k but Clive would have to spend big time. While the Titans have done a good job getting community engagement they too are starting to struggle finacialy not that they would admit it.

Is it time to cut Gold Coast United loose?

If I was a storm player I would go hide instead of boycotting.

I am sick of the players and the coach carrying on like they didn’t know what was going on. Are they all that stupid? Although, we are talking about league players who manage to do stupid stuff on a regular basis.

Bellamy should walk. There is enough proof now that he only ever won so much for melbourne because he spent 3 million more than everyone else. He lost the State of Origin series again because he couldn’t buy the best players. Wally Lewis as coach could even win the premiship if he spent an extra 3 million more than the rest.

Would be nice to hear what other clubs admin, coaches and players think about the whole situation or are they not saying anything because they have rorted the system at some stage.

$3.17 million over is hardly a Storm in a teacup

Storm deny boycott rumours

Oh course Storm would win – they still have the same squad that has cheated the salary cap. They have the best players. Storm should win most their games this season because they still have the best team which they cheated to get. Part of their punishment should have been to lose some of their star players.

Melbourne on Anzac Day: A tale of two codes

Gallop shows he is not corrupt like the rest of them. Good on him for stepping up and hopefully saving a game that is getting worse every year.

You're Mr Gallop. What would you have done?

the players are just as guilty as they would know that they themselves are getting over paid.

Melbourne Storm stripped of premierships

The reason AFL and League are more popular has nothing to do with diving. Its the free to air coverage which comes with massive support from the newspapers. If football had prime time free to air coverage and a newspaper dedicated to covering everything about football then the A-League would be just as popular if not more as so many more people actually participate in the sport. Also all the football teams are only a few years old, the A-league is hardly a 100 year old competition which has built a culture and history for the clubs. If anything the football community is still divided from many older fans from the old NSL days.

If AFL or League had no free to air coverage and no media backing like the A-league, would they survive and do as well as some of the A-league clubs? League was getting 8 page liftouts for preseason football at the same time A-league was getting 1/4 of a page for finals football in the sydney papers. I think AFL would survive within Victoria, I would be worried about league as many clubs are already struggling with finacial issues with poor crowds and lossing the income from pokies. QLD teams would survive and maybe a couple from NSW if they merged.

Why football struggles for support in Australia

Good comment about the difference in contact. I played Rugby league for a few years and also played football for a few years. I got maybe two hand injuries from playing league and the game was much rougher but when i played football (soccer) i got a lot of clips on the ankle which hurt like hell. I thought i was a tough guy coming to football after league but was suprised at how much it hurt when some one kicked you in the leg or ankle during a tackle with football boots. This was much different to being prepared to get tackled or to tackle in a game of league as i was prepared.

Of course there are theatrics mainly from European/south American players in football to cheat. But in League how many time do you see a player hump up and down to pretend to get up or to go and play the ball but pretend to fall over to get a penalty. Its cheating and it happens in every single game. Its obvious too when they do it because so many players just get up and play the ball even when a player is hanging on to them instead of diving or flopping around like a whale. Just as it is obvious when a football player dives without contact.

Why football struggles for support in Australia

There are divers in most sports. Your kidding yourself if you think there is no diving or milking of a penalty in rugby league or AFL. Every single game of football regardless of code will have diving and milking.

Watch a game of Rugby league and count how many times a player will attempt to milk a penalty, it happens on more than 1 occassion per game thats for sure.

These players will do anything to win. I dont know of many players that will tell the ref he got something wrong if it goes against his team. Actuall the only person i have seen do this was an italian footballer Paolo Dicanio for West Ham.

Why football struggles for support in Australia

Come on – Tweed Seagulls went belly up in the National league as did many Gold Coast Rugby League teams. Its a hard market to crack. Football will eventually get enough support over time as the Titans have now got. You can’t compare Titans and Gold Coast United. A-league is a few years old NRL just celebrated 100 years. The indigenous game was not the titans – if the Socceroos played at skilled park it would be sold out too. Also Rugby League has failed so many times on the coast its about time that they are starting to get it right with the Titans – but there are still many problems at the titans, for example being kicked out of their office blocks and the weekly worry their players will end up in the paper disgracing the club with some assualt charge.

What i don’t get is whats the point for Clive to own the club if he doesn’t want the best team in the comp. why have a team if you are not going to spend money on it? Surely he knows he can’t make much money out of a football club. I would understand if the club was locally run with little funds but Clive’s funds are unlimited compared to the other teams. Clive if you don’t spend whats the point of you owning the club???

Gold Coast United: from the sublime to the ridiculous

So because other guys are grubs for pissing in public its okay for anyone to do so. I don’t do that. If Gallen is stupid enough to not get it by now than he deserves the fine and shame. Rugby League would end up being a third rate sport in the next few years if the players don’t pull their heads in – surley its not that hard to be a little proffessional and stay out of the papers for the wrong reasons. Every week there is not just one incedent but 2 or 3 its crap for the fans. Articles like this do nothing to help the game.

If I was Gallen, I'd be very pissed too

Great hit and result if it was fairdinkum, it all seemed a bit suspect to me – did Roy Jones come to fight or just pick up some cash to pay the bills. Mundine vs Green part II should be on the cards now.

Roy Jones Jr, Danny Green a real let down

Green stuns Roy Jones Jr in first round to defend title

And he certainly has stature to stimulate would-be United supporters which, judging from the mediocre turnout to the club’s derby friendly with North Queensland Fury, might be just what is needed

I was at the trial match against Fury and the turn out was hardly mediocre. GU only released a maxium of 5000 tickets. There seemed to be at least 3000 which was great considering the area has been bombarded with bad weather and the big name players were not playing.

Big fan of Larsson – hope he comes if very fit

Cashed up United chase Larsson's signature

Will be interesting to see the effect of the national A-league has on national level players in the future. Roar, Fury and GU from QLD should see big strides in development for the state.

Why do most Socceroos come from one State?
