Don’t argue premierships with a Hawks supporter Yatz, they’ve got you beaten hands down any way you look at it

The greatest Magpies of the last 50 years

I’ll preface this by saying that both my sons played basketball and they forced me to subscribe to pay tv so they could watch the NBA. They have since retired and found other interests. But I would like to put forward field hockey as a team game that is played in most countries, professionally in a few as a world wide sport, although I’m not suggesting as popular as basketball

Is basketball Australia’s No. 1 men's international team sport?

Who is Hadley? Is that a Sydney in joke or something

Cameron Smith would turn the Titans into a premiership force

About as much chance as that happening PTS as me following your mob

Which bottom four side can make the biggest leap in 2021?

You can include the Marsh brothers to your comment. The door should have been closed on them ages ago due to their hit and miss form over the years. Don’t anyone quote averages, as they don’t tell the true form of both of them in clutch games. I guess with Langer as coach we’ll still see at least one of them in the squad

Matthew Wade's time is up. Josh Philippe must take the gloves

Hardly a recommendation to go by

The greatest Magpies of the last 50 years

Please Chip remind me who were these people who considered Thomas the best player in the league at some point. Other than Collingwood tragics.

The greatest Magpies of the last 50 years

Bellerive Oval has been turned from a suburban oval with one grandstand, into what you see today about ten or so years ago. It is surrounded by residential houses on three sides and the beach on the other. There is no room to extend in any direction, especially up as the locals successfully stopped the cricket from building higher and putting in car parking. Under the conditions of the re construction the use of the lights are restricted to a certain amount of times per year and switched off at 11 pm.

As for York Park, I believe a lot of that is heritage listed, for what ever reason I’m not sure, last time I was there (2016) the whole place was a mess. Better parking, but the Uni is about to take over some of that area, the lights aren’t up to standard. For Launceston I think a new build would be necessary but who’s going to do that to get one more game a year than what they get now, after sharing with Hobart, not forgetting that all teams play at least one home at the MCG

We need to talk about Tassie

Unlike other countries the West Indies is not a country, but an amalgam of small islands and larger republics, which would make it very hard to put together a competitive team. You then have the problem that they are not playing for their respective countries, therefore a lack of motivation. The West Indies cricket board should be congratulated that they can make it happen at all. It doesn’t help when the faint hearted tv station and big bash organisers banned Gayle for the very thing he was being payed for, to put bums on seats and glue people to the tv

The search is on for Caribbean flair

I believe Gutwein is just grand standing, to throw a smoke screen over something he wants people and the media distracted from, he’s very good at that

We need to talk about Tassie

Quite right Nick, since our sons have moved to Melbourne they have rarely used their MCC memberships, that they waited 28 years for except, to take their poor old man to watch his Hawks if I’m over there. I pushed an AFL team on to them and their sister when they were young, none picked Hawthorn. Now none of them are interested in football at all. I go to the MCG with them and they play with their phones. These are 30 year olds not young kids

We need to talk about Tassie

You’re comments are all correct, we don’t deserve a team, which is what you read all the time time in the media, if we get a team we must earn it. I have been involved in football here for 30 years, starting in the Statewide League, and since then, it has been a procession of clubs from all levels folding, mainly due to a lack of players. Whole leagues have disappeared or amalgamated with others. My own kids played soccer as juniors, because there were no under age footy teams in our area, and then switched to basketball, all this while I was still actively involved in football. How embarrassing, but that is how it goes here, footy is a joke. If they get an AFL team, they will need to import people to run it.

We need to talk about Tassie

Good call on all the players you’ve mentioned, I would like to see Ceglar or McEvoy have big seasons in their final years. Also hoping Sicily can come back sooner than expected

The order of merit: Hawthorn Hawks 2021 season

We have friends that fly down here for the North games with membership packages, including accommodation.

Biggest problem for them is it takes longer to get to and from Tullamarine than it does to fly to Hobart

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

Micko you haven’t lived through a Hobart winter

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

It’s not hard to see where you come from

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

Micko how many went to SANFL and WAFL games pre inclusion of the expansion teams? I went to a couple of those games when visiting and they had thousands, here for a State League game we’re lucky to get 200

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

Obviously you’re not a Melbourne based North supporter

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

You surely can’t compare a six week summer competition to a seven month winter season

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

The Hurricanes are fully backed by CA

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

It might be thriving if you’re a public servant or on the dole, but private industry is still doing it very hard. As far as memberships are concerned, realistically, if they get 25,000 that is about comparable to a Melbourne club population wise. The local league didn’t get half that at its best But you need to remember there isn’t a ground here that holds anymore than 18,000.

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

Tell me Brendon why does Tasmania deserve an AFL team. We don’t even support our own State League, football is a joke down here. Thirty years ago there were ten teams getting excellent crowds, now there are only four of the original teams left and if you get a crowd of 200 it’s celebration time

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

Quolls you’re right a lot has changed in the last 20 years here. Mainly we’ve been invaded by retirees and tree changers who add very little to the ongoing economy. As for your statement “where would you rather be after a game, on the Hobart waterfront or around the back of Arden St”, if you were playing for Tasmania, making you a big fish in a tiny bowl, you would be the target of every drunk bogan in Salamanca

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

Never a truer word spoken. Contrary to what Nick Riewoldt said in the paper recently about it being a great place to get away from the fish bowl of Melbourne, what Does he think they would be here, walking targets for every bogan, and we’ve got a few of them. My kids couldn’t move to the mainland quick enough and are still there. Very few players come back to Tasmania after their AFL careers, so Riewoldt’s comments about it being some sort of utopia for young players are way off the mark

Stop dreaming - Tasmania won't get its own AFL team

It’s about time someone wrote an article showing sense on this subject. You are right in all the items regarding the AFL perspective. What needs to be added is Tasmania doesn’t have any grounds large enough to sustain an AFL team, particularly in COVID times of 50% capacity, which Gutwein will keep in place forever. Another thing I’ve found from asking around is would my friends change from their life long AFL teams to support the new Tasmania team, at least 90% said no. At my work place a Tasmanian AFL team has never been discussed from memory, it all seems to be media driven. This latest push from Gutwein I suspect is just another smoke screen that he’s thrown out to hide some bad news. I’m a strong AFL follower, but if Tasmania gets a team I won’t switch allegiances from my beloved Hawks.
