Cricket can’t solve Australia Day conundrum - it’s not up to sports to make tough decisions for governments

16th of Dec?
21st of may?
24th of Oct?
June 20th?
Or we have the courage to start a new tradition and in 100 years we’re celebrated for continuing and building on the foundations that make this country so great!

Cricket can’t solve Australia Day conundrum - it’s not up to sports to make tough decisions for governments

Talk about weak sauce…….”but that’s the way it’s always been”!

What does it mean to you?

Cricket can’t solve Australia Day conundrum - it’s not up to sports to make tough decisions for governments

That’s pure Aussie pride right there Richie!
Sounds like you would celebrate any given day titled Aust Day with a public holiday to boot….like me you might even celebrate being Australian and living in this great country on multiple days throughout the year!

Cricket can’t solve Australia Day conundrum - it’s not up to sports to make tough decisions for governments

Because of the significance of the date?
It’s not “Aust Day” being slagged off its the date….

Cricket can’t solve Australia Day conundrum - it’s not up to sports to make tough decisions for governments

I’m with a comment down further…..make it the last Friday of Jan, or the first…

It’s a day that doesn’t really need any historical significance….just a day to be proud Aussies, no matter where you came from

We are on the cusp of a generational change there is bound to be a decline in performance, especially given the talent approaching the end of their careers, but I’m confident that wont mean a decline in opportunities to play test cricket especially against…dare i say it…england and india!
We wont know if any potential will reach their heights at international level until they get their shot… but they will get their shot

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

That’s exactly what happened is it?…..they became uncompetitive, that’s the only factor in…..

Ok so I just had a rubbery look at number of tests between Aust and windies, SA for the 24 years before 2000…
Windies ~28 (compared to this decades 29)
SA ~18 (a lot less than this decade!)
*I am at work, getting interrupted and a memory like a gold fish so figures may be less than accurate

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

lol…you think so?

Of course it will one day be our turn to be flogged again….I reckon they’ll line up for a crack at us!
And our greedy board will get us through as they continue to prioritise viable fixtures…which may or not include a few more test against a variety of nations

It’s that inevitable crash that makes me laugh at all the people lamenting these quick tests, one day we’ll be the cause…..

It’s not “all about money”….but to ignore the importance of it would def spell the end of Oz test cricket

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

That’s right, but where the ICC has an international responsibility the boards from each country has only the health of the game in their country as their top priority… and the majors must be doing something right based on the still relevant aspirations of their players

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

CA have to see it that way….the competition from other sports for dollars is expanding and the competition with franchises to pay players is getting harder..

I would rather see Australia play limited opposition and make enough money to keep test cricket here viable than burn money out of some false obligation to “global” test cricket which has never even been a reality….

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

They prioritised it Bushy because it was rewarding now there’s easier ways to make money playing cricket……this is exasperated in countries with limited funds, they just can’t compete with franchise money…….and if you can’t beat em…

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

That’s going to “save the game” is it Paul?

Global test cricket has always been a pipe dream and never achieved I have no idea why people equate realising that fact as the end….

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

Could not agree more Jeff….and it’s on the ICC to take any flac as they drop members they can’t afford….

And, IMO, there’s no issue with nations looking after their own interests…..they need to pay players enough to aspire to tests and return enough to grass roots to encourage gen next…

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

Please, I suspect the root cause is ICC signing up members willy nilly hoping it would net them a fortune…unfortunately most don’t have the money or resources to be viable without handouts or competitive.

I hope Australia continue to set fixtures to their benefit so we can make enough money to pay our players enough to keep test cricket goals and also so we can return it to our own grass roots for the future gens….

Australia play nearly half their Tests against England and India - to save the game, that needs to change

I think it’s the dreamers that are hurting the most, I consider myself a “purist” but I don’t need test cricket to be a global game to be content….Ashes H&A still equals a living sport in my book!
I actually find the suggestion that the “big 3” need to bank roll international cricket as ridiculous….I mean, most likely that will stall our own player payments and they will seek franchise dollars more and more, and the returning funds to grass roots will also stall or drop off…potentially killing test cricket for all….

COMMENT: What's the point in playing the Windies? Only the future of Test cricket itself

I’m with Trent…change the rule, get these relevance seeking ragers to put away their pitch forks!

Also rated Claire’s justification to her common sense decision! (now to make it a legal one….should have been done after the Starc example)

'Complete control': Moises rejects fuss over 'embarrassing oversight', 'flat out wrong' BBL catch controversy

Coyness?…according to the headline he “savaged” them….

'Double standards': Khawaja savages ICC hypocrisy in Instagram post as Cummins defends 'pretty vanilla' protest

I tried my best to keep up with this article but it felt all over the shop (it might be that it contradicts comments lambasting the so called “big 3” for trying to play series that make money so they can pay their professional athletes instead of bank rolling less interested or less game developed nations in the name of ….?? fairness? or some fallacy that cricket will die if not played at the top level by every nation in the world?!….and in the same breath lamenting the “drudgery”..)
But I think the suggestion is, if it’s not the “big 3” then it’s a 2 test summer dolling out pointless points for them and more short form games….
Should go down well with other states that like a test, not to mention players…hmm I’m in the no camp…..

Multi-format contests loom as better option for most opponents than only playing fait accompli Test series

You guys need to have a chat to whoever is in charge of these headlines. Once again after actions to protect player safety they have seen a need to headline it with the term “farce”….
Not to mention “Johnson doubles down” after stating the obvious…
Come on…..try non dramatic headlines for a while, I’m sure you’ll still get views…

'It's bouncing ridiculously': BBL clash ends in farce as Geelong pitch deemed unsafe just six overs in

I’ll stop being naive when you stop the OTT heresy…….truth is probably in the middle somewhere but even then, it doesn’t need a royal commission and public hanging just to satisfy your suspicions….
6 months is ample time to recover from burn out I reckon, throw in a change of scenery, perfect…

You want to know what annoys me….people who automatically assume murmuring the words “mental health” is an excuse for something dodgy….

Tell me exactly what the “serious issue” is in your eyes…

Hardwick hits back at critics over Suns getting preferential draft picks 'for the greater good of the game'

I can’t believe the nature of this comment…..you seriously frothy for outrage based on zero facts just because a guy wanted to change jobs for the betterment of his mental health?

The last line best reflects the maturity here I guess…..

Hardwick hits back at critics over Suns getting preferential draft picks 'for the greater good of the game'

Spot on JW…we didn’t have a lot to trade and got 4 guys that fill a need with room to grow….

Shame about X but he did seem to struggle coming back from injuries with the added pressure of being cast in the Rozee Butters trifecta…I wish him well. Think he will do better closer to home…….

'Sold part of their future to tread water': Power failure leaves Port in the dark post-trade period

Too right Adam…..if we jus took picks that wouldn’t play next year anyway we’d go backwards for sure…
Of that undersized defense we had Jonas retire and McKenzie old and declining along with Clurey and them some kids (including Pasini) a few trades in this area were needed even if they aren’t premier KPD of the league (if they were we got no one!)
Possibly one more ruck than we needed….assuming we don’t let both of Lycett and Hayes go..
The risk with dropping picks is we end up an old/young list but we’ve had that ….and we actually improve that side of things…..now to f-ing win this thing!!

'Sold part of their future to tread water': Power failure leaves Port in the dark post-trade period

I don’t mind it either Maxy….we would have risked treading water moreso if we had sat on draft picks (probably gone backwards especially in defense)
One of Rat and BZT needs to become a stingy full back for the comps giant forwards and I’m hoping Rat can use his athletic ability to keep up in the air and on the ground with players such as Kings…..I’d be showing him vision of Mal Micheal! He doesn’t need to intercept, just bring it to ground to advantage our other defenders….
I agree with the Aurthor on the ruck situ though….one of Soldo or Sweet would have been fine…definitely have to let both Lycett and Hayes go (hoping Hayes especially finds a new home!) so that Dante still gets run here and there………
