Here’s the thing (aside from the increase in cap spreading to 30 players not the 25 this year plus the assumption that they are under the cap in 2017 to start with) the whole TPA process makes the cap irrelevant. You can “legally” spend as much as you like on your players with “approved TPA’s” but I have yet to hear how 90% of TPA’s in reality come to be under the salary cap rules. It just doesn’t happen. The clubs know it, as does the NRL, player managers and anyone else with a brain. Yet the NRL either can’t do anything or more likely choose not to for a bunch of reasons. Much like their promises regarding player managers who are key to this whole mess remaining status quo.

At the end of the day we will continue to have 5 or 6 clubs that regularly make the semi’s because they get away with spending a lot more on their squads. You can dress it up however you like but the vast majority of TPA’s are organised by clubs and those with deep pockets & “acquaintances” will continue to dominate.

Five reasons why the Roosters won't be over the cap in 2018

Everybody knows that’s not what happens. In 99% of TPA deals it’s organised by the club as part of “the deal”. The NRL just doesn’t have the gumption or incentive to address it so clubs like the Roosters & Bronco’s etc will always field a stacked team compared to the also rans as they have a much bigger budget.

From Rabbitoh to Rooster? Angus Crichton to leave South Sydney

Gee the imports will need to fire as outside of the captain there’s not a lot of star power there. Won’t Head be unavailable for white-ball duty? When do the one-dayers start?

The Ashes statistical XI: Who makes the cut?

Haha

The Ashes statistical XI: Who makes the cut?

LOL. This guy cracks me up. Give him one of Bradman’s bats & a pitch similar to what Bradman played on. Wouldn’t be too hard to get him out then…every 2nd shot would be a miss hit. Would be much like these 6’6″ giant tennis players if you gave them the old style racquets.

Chris Gayle claims he is better than Bradman

For all of Parra’s local juniors who turned out to be superstars you selected Sterlo? Born in Toowoomba & raised in Wagga? What do you classify as a junior? A player brought to the club before senior football? The last Parra “juniors” to hold up the cup as captain were Jamie Lyon & Andrew Ryan LOL.

Every great club era has balanced itself with imports to fill the void. I can’t think of a single club in the modern era that won multiple titles with a majority of locals including Parra, Raiders, Broncos, Manly etc etc.

The ugly contradiction in Newcastle's fairy tale

Well stated TB.

NRL issue Manly with breach notice following salary cap investigation

Clearly there’s been whistle-blowers. These things only get “uncovered” by the NRL this way. The only difference this year is the NRL aren’t leaking snippets to the press every day.

Exactly how does an “NRL legal” TPA come about by the way?? Why are the panthers not being investigated after Maloney’s blooper in the press about waiting for the club to organise the TPA before signing?

The whole TPA system is flawed & this selective “investigating” is just embarrassing. Does TG really believe that we don’t know what’s going on? Call an amnesty, bring in a fairer system & let’s get on with a bona fide level playing field.

Manly to fight alleged cap breaches

In fairness to Fittler he picked this team early season (May?) whereas these rankings (2018?) I can only assume were done at the end of the year? As you stated, Tom was unavailable (and he still has a lot of errors in his game) and Moylan (not sure how he ranks so highly) has had a year to forget (or explain) on a number of levels. Whilst I would have gone with Tedesco it was not a gimme selection pre game 1 (and really he didn’t come close to matching that performance in the other games). He is also not a renowned passer either. Tamou just has not picked up his game this year but if he was a Qldr would certainly have been picked for game 1 based on past service. The rest of the selections were either in the team selected or picked by a vast majority of “experts” in their sides so not really many surprises there. Besides form can be fleeting. RCG got better as the year went on (Latrell & Tyrone didn’t) and who would have thought Michael Morgan wouldn’t turn up in the RLWC final.

I just hope he hasn’t penciled in 80% of his side in preseason like Laurie does. I also hope he is objective and we don’t end up with the Penrith/Easts/Newy blues team.

No room for the top three in Freddy's New South Wales team

Yep – can’t just blame Hayne for the debacle. The Titans (and the NRL) fell over themselves offering him a ridiculous contract when he came back and were very smug about it being a win/win for the Gold Coast.

It’s all well and good paying massive overs for a player but it’s loaded with big risks & rarely ends well. Particularly for those clubs that don’t have the “deeper” pockets that others have, so your higher paid player takes a larger % of your cap (a $1m player at the rorters isn’t the same % as one at the GC).

BREAKING (again): Jarryd Hayne leaving Gold Coast, Titans reportedly set to confirm exit later today

That first half was getting embarrassing. Even the commentators were struggling to contain themselves.

Aaron Woods' clearance proves rugby league still doesn't get it

I assume by 2 you’re referring to Aust & England? I realise you’re making a generalisation but NZ & France obviously have professional teams – there are probably more. Didn’t the coal train sign to play in north America?

Rebrand the Rugby League World Cup – and ditch the Kangaroos

Tends to play pretty well in his first season at a new club so should be interesting viewing out west. Signing a 3 year contract might be a bit optimistic though. Has he been anywhere for 3 seasons? Also when did the Pennies last have a half for 3 consecutive seasons?

Three-year deal: Maloney confirms Panthers move

I don’t think I made clear my thoughts:

Longevity in playing doesn’t equal great coach (most great coaches weren’t great players)
Longevity in coaching doesn’t equal great coaching director/administrator

Hence a long serving ref doesn’t equate to being a good administrator or manager of ref talent. TBH I think McCallum has been the best ref boss, though wasn’t necessarily the greatest or longest serving ref. Much like coaching or being an administrator, a ref’s boss requires a different skill set though one that is helped by experience & knowledge from actual refereeing.

Bernard Sutton to replace Tony Archer as refs boss: What?!?

Maloney has at least been key in big game wins (GF’s/Origins) and certainly more consistent at club level. Moylan has shown signs of being a better player with more upside but not consistently & yet to prove himself in big games. There’s also big questions marks about his state of mind. We don’t know what exactly went down end of this season & therefore can only speculate on if & how quickly he can bounce back from whatever the real reasons were for his absences. It also seemed clear to me that Moylan wasn’t bringing the best out of Cleary (for whatever reason).

My guess is that, from a Penrith perspective, the deal is more about punting on Cleary than Maloney per se.

It's official; Moylan parts with the Panthers; set to join Cronulla in 2018

I disagree with your thinking. Longevity doesn’t necessarily equate to a better ref. Further, being a good on field ref doesn’t equate to a good “3rd umpire/bunker official” and it certainly doesn’t equate to being the best referees boss. Does the longest serving player equate to the best player or the best coach or the best NRL boss/CEO/whatever NRL role? History suggests the best of these roles doesn’t come from the longest serving players nor even the best players. I think the same applies to refs & the refs boss role.

I’ve never rated archer that highly & to me has always come across as being quite subjective & dictator like in his decision making. If you think the bunker hasn’t worked…well that comes under Archer!

I do agree the appointment should be extensive & “openly advertised”. I think Bernard has done a good job in the bunker role as it stands (needs some tweaking) and wouldn’t be against his appointment to refs boss as long as the process is thorough & robust.

Bernard Sutton to replace Tony Archer as refs boss: What?!?

He’s certainly backed himself into corner. I don’t think his manager has helped his cause from a brand point of view but he’s old enough to own the consequences of ongoing risky decisions.

Titans should release Hayne: Sattler

What is tiring is comments like these. Do the East Germans or the Russians or the Chinese swim team keep coming back with “not those tired old comments about our little bit of cheating”… Just accept the fact the club massively cheated during those years and cop it sweet so we can all move on.

Melbourne Storm: Still setting the benchmark

Amazing to think that the premiers (and 4 times in the previous 6 years) only got 2 players picked in the whole squad. SOO was clearly in full swing…

The 1986 Unbeatables: The greatest team - Part 2

They had a 6 month window from the date of the offence to lay charges which is extremely difficult. It sounds to me like they ran out of time to come up with conclusive evidence. But then again nothing happened at Coffs Harbour either…or the Broncos & Gee…

No match-fixing in NRL, say NSW police

Broncs are definitely lacking size/grunt in the forward pack. Unless they can up the speed/tempo of the pack (eg Oates) then they need to address that. I think they also need more out of Roberts. It’s all well and good to be on the highlight reel for scoring tries on your day but not only is he a defensive liability, if the opposition makes a break he’s the first to give up. Surely he should be the last to stop chasing?

Brisbane Broncos 2017 season review

If they can gel quickly I can see them getting over France (but could get ugly against the heavyweights). Probably helps they have a bunch of current & former Eels/Tigers which should assist combo’s (Robinson/Layoun/Moses/Farah/Mannah/Twal/Wehbe).

Rugby League World Cup preview: Lebanon savouring historic RLWC return

Not really. They led at half time in both finals. They were unlucky not to beat the storm & played an error riddled 2nd half against the cows. Not exactly the halves fault. Yes quality across the park was always an issue given they have no current top tier test or origin players so perhaps Cronk would help in that regard but it’s a big gamble to change what is a new & promising halves pairing for what 1 or 2 seasons & then what?

Perhaps if rumours of Norman are true but otherwise I’m not sure the disruption would be worth it for 1 or 2 seasons. As good as Cronk is he’s played a decade at the same club, same coach, with the same spine so it would take half season to gel. Eels priority is up front grunt & a semi replacement (depending on if/when he’s coming back).

Eels don't need Cronk: Sterlo

In fairness to Sterlo (and everyone gets predictions wrong sometimes) who foresaw Foran’s off-field issues coming? When he was on the field Parramatta were extremely competitive.

Eels don't need Cronk: Sterlo
