Great article.

The knee-jerk reaction of implementing the new sin bin interpretation was due to one ref missing a high shot on Tedesco and missing a bloke getting knees in the ribs, all in the one play.

The issue of the new sin bin approach has been conflated with the fact that trivial repeat offences are now also being put in the bin.

Vlandys refusing to accept any feedback about player fatigue is just ignorant and arrogant, and is now being compounded by, guess what – more fatigue due to the rubbish rule interpretations he has brought in.

The “players technique will adjust rule” is complete rubbish. No amount of technique change can cater for a falling player, a player who slips over, incidental brushing contact or the head.

“It’s about player safety” ie also a crock. If it is, show us some data and numbers that support the fact that a rule change/interpretation needed to be rushed through without proper trial or consultation. Show us the data.

How many head knocks have there been in games this year resulting in concussion? How many have been in attack and how many have been in defence? For those in attack, was it illegal play? What was the sanction for that person – ie penalty, sin bin, send off or suspension?

How do those numbers compare to previous seasons?

Either the NRL didn’t bother to research this, or they did and the numbers don’t support the need for their knee jerk reaction.

How many similar incidents occur at club training? Wait let me guess – you don’t know because it’s not measured in any way.

What toll does backing up from origin and test matches play on players? It’s about player well fare right? Or aren’t you interested in this?

What about the length of the season? All about player welfare isn’t it?

There isn’t one part of this that resonates with any sound rational thinking. To trot out buzz words like “player safety” and “welfare” is nice and convenient, and essentially neutralises anyone who tries to oppose the dictatorship, but it lacking serious substance.

The NRL stuffed its messaging. Have they lost the crowd?

The issue is the decisions Vlandy has made are ok when you look holistically but are largely non-sensical when you break them down.

The sudden panic knee jerk reaction to crack down on head highs was due largely to the refs and bunker missing knees to the ribs. What and how is this related to a sudden need to crack down on head contact? They stuffed up the Tedesco head knock, which should’ve been a send off. An isolated mistake results in a knee jerk reaction?

There has been no data provided to prove that the sudden and immediate crack down on head highs is needed – for example, Jake friend gets trotted out as an example, however many of his concussions occurred whilst he was defending. How does sin binning Tyson Gamble for an innocuous touch of the head help?

It is embarrassing that guys who were binned only end up with a fine. There has to be an admission that it is overkill if the offence is so insignificant that it doesn’t warrant a suspension, but somehow required the person to be binned? The influence that has on a result is huge.

The 6 again whilst generally seems accepted as a positive, could easily have been trialled better before being implemented. Data, actual facts, will show you that this year has seen more lopsided shorelines than ever before. Is that a positive?

If the refs and judiciary carry on with the crack down, we’ll have an origin spectacle of 11 v 12 almost certainly and in that game will likely have several stars missing, through suspension.

The send offs in magic round were largely warranted – but nearly all of the sin bins were soft and an embarrassment to the game. The best games are ones where the ref isn’t noticed or discussed, yet Vlandys is pushing the ref into the spotlight taking away from the game.

There are so many one sided games that the result is known after 10 mins. That’s not a positive.

The game is the poorest spectacle it’s been for some time.

Revolution or V’Landys: The only chances to get good leadership for the NRL

League life was so appalling it was unwatchable, it’s not a surprise it was axed.

Whilst I don’t support the hiring of Ray Hadley, there are a real lack of genuinely good options – male or female or black or white or yellow or blue. I agree it’s a step backwards but given some of the other duds already in the industry, I suspect it’s a small talent pool.

Fox League's decision to hire Ray Hadley is baffling

Sorry Tim but I disagree about the raiders. Their attack has been appalling – disjointed, blokes out of position, etc. CNK back this week should help a bit, but if the connections between the 1-6-7 don’t improve they’ll continue to struggle. They’re obviously missing Bateman too who was important in their attack.

NRL not takes: Four stupid current 'hot takes' that are just plain wrong

Well written. I think it’s fair to say it’s universally accepted that Maxwell has had a tough run with selectors. However, lets not speculate that is linked to his mental health issues now.

Let’s let him sort himself out and then hopefully work his way back into the Australian set up.

Just let Glenn Maxwell be Glenn Maxwell

Ironically it’s probably one of the few times that Burns has been lucky in selection (he’s deserved it more in the past and got brushed) and one of the few times I would’ve been more than happy with SMarsh to be selected.

Burns, Head and Neser deserved their Test call ups

It’s pretty sad for the sport of boxing that bouts like this get significantly more attention than actual boxers. I hope Hall cleans him up, but don’t think he will.

The scheduling of the tournament in that boring period between the end of the cricket season and the start of the footy seasons is excellent. I think it’s an excellent chance to bring women’s sport along in leaps and bounds.

The standard has improved dramatically in just a few years and will only continue to do so as it morphs into a professional sport.

Let’s hope they get some bumper crowds.

If he went outside to seek revenge for his mate, that’s different to an off the cuff defence of your mate. That’s no longer self-defence, it’s assault. Even if the bloke deserves a flogging.

Not how it works champ.

So Starc gets bagged for bowling pies, but gets out Labuschagne who gets Praise but loses no credibility for getting out to a bloke bowling pies? Irony.

I think Starc will come good with a few games under his belt, Pattinson hasn’t convinced me and Siddle needs to not be considered again. It’ll be interesting to see how the next couple of games go and who lines up in Brisbane.

Starc flops and Carey shines in Sheffield Shield

100% agree with the article.

I have no problem with the Cronk sin binning but if he hadn’t been binned, I wouldn’t have been upset either. Certainly justification either way albeit probably the right call.

The trainer thing – awful rule correctly adjudicated. Raiders dudded somewhat but at nobody’s fault.

The 6 again. The raiders were robbed of 1 tackle, half a tackle. They were not “robbed” of a full set 10 metres out – that would have been an incorrect call.

If you are robbed of “an opportunity to put a kick in and maybe something will happen” and that is literally your biggest gripe in a game of footy, then you’ve come out of it alright. Compared to farcical sin binnings (see some of the soft sin binnings in the finals), blatant wrong calls (Vunivalu hand on the line) and a hundred other ordinary/wrong calls, the raiders had a decent night with the refs.

For once there wasn’t a massive blunder by the video ref on the ruling of a try or a controversial penalty try. These are seriously game changing decisions.

The raiders never had possession of it. You’re clutching at straws.

But it’s obvious the rule needs to be reviewed.

Six talking points from the NRL grand final 2019

No, the attacking team is who has possession. Not “who possibly maybe will have” possession.

Still a crap rule. Get the trainers off the park and change the rule to simply reset the play with no advantage to either team.

JWH, Radley and Papali all ahead of him for me. Maybe even Brett Morris.

Papali and Tapine were both better than Wighton.

2019 NRL Grand Final player ratings: Canberra Raiders

It was a comical set of events, and embarrassing, but in the end the ruling was correct. If they gave 6 again and the raiders scored it was the result
of a poor decision. So yes, embarrassing, but the best of the outcomes available after the initial stuff up.

The sin bin wasn’t a sin bin in 90% of games and Wighton pretending he played for Melbourne victory and acting as if a sniper hit him late in the first half was nothing short of embarrassing.

Shame for the raiders but I’m afraid their “refs fault” culture, bred by Ricky Stuart is the cause of this.

I love how against the storm the “foot on the line” controversy was dismissed because the storm “had all half to score but didn’t and weren’t good enough” but all of a sudden, a slight controversy in which ultimately the correct call was made had cost them the gf? Stop embarrassing yourselves and the game.

It was a debacle but in the end the call was actually right. If it has gone the other way, the error was bigger.

Papali and JWH easily.

Shouldn’t have booed him but he wasn’t best on ground. Probably the worst player to ever win a Clive Churchill.

Is Wighton the worst recipient of a Clive Churchill ever?

Roosters go back-to-back at 2019 NRL Grand Final

He was. So if that’s your complaint, you have none. It was a soft sin bin. Not as soft as jack Wightons dive though.

Roosters go back-to-back at 2019 NRL Grand Final

I was in a pub full of raiders fans but with no sound. Are the raiders really crying about the refs? Cronk sent to the bin for nothing and Wighton falling over after a ghost hit him: what the f are they crying about? I hate the roosters and hoped they’d get smashed but ffs raiders fans, stop embarrassing yourselves.

Erin crying every two mins because people call her out on being terrible at her job is getting tiring. She’s an awful presenter and should absolutely not be involved in rugby league in any way. Sure, go host a variety tv show or Australians funniest home videos or something and she’d probably be ok, but stay away from footy. She’s awful.

Couldn’t give a crap about any feud. Just get her off.
