As the twig is bent so the tree grows. When I was a kid the coaches drilled into us forwards that we weren’t allowed to pass the ball – thats what backs do. I was a bit disappointed but I wanted to play so I followed the coaches instructions. Seems stupid now looking back.

Defining the difference between the All Blacks and the rest

I’m glad we have got rid of that “lose ugly by not too many points” mentality.

Who said winning ugly matters?

I know what you mean only the other week the Rebels were playing the Reds and one of the Reds players gave a good impersonation of eye gouging a Rebels player. The Ref then appeared to penalize a Rebels player for trying to pull Mr Eye-gouge off the Rebels player. Fortunately the TMO stepped in and reversed the penalty. If that penalty had stood and the Reds had won the game from it, there would have been a bunch of very whingey Rebels fans complaining about being robbed. Fortunately it turned out okay and everyone was happy. Because each and every wrong or controversial decision against your team decides the game if it was close.

I think we should just accept that right or wrong the ref is right(*). Thats their job – to decide. Most of the time they get it right. Adding a requirement to explain after a decision the exact reason for a ruling wouldn’t help. It would just give armchair lawyers more scope to complain about them misinterpreting paragraph C of rule 47.2. If a team isn’t far enough ahead to not be affected by one or two bad decisions then they didn’t “deserve” to win.

* unless you are in the stands at the ground, then you should yell abuse at the ref for his obvious vision impairment.

Rugby union must start clarifying penalties

No one likes a smarty-pants Felix! I think the more casual cycling fans (like me) didn’t notice Uran’s hard work in the off season. I hope Cadel is able to survive the next few days without dropping any further down the leader board. But the sight of him unsuccessfully trying to catch Uran’s wheel before Aru towed him up the road the other night doesn’t bode well. Out of the top 10 seems unlikely but down to 5-6 could easily happen if those climbers put in a big effort.
