If I am 100% honest, I don’t think the loss of the forward pack is a big a deal as people are saying. Jesse and Felise were a shadow of their former selves this season, it looked like (as a fan) they were already on the beach in QLD. I think the fresh blood will help the team progress further.

Munster is an enigma. He is amazing on his day, but to be fair, for the last 6 weeks, he has been amazing only 2 games. His misses in defence and “I’m the best” attitude still dont fit with the Storm playing style. I’d say let him go in 2023 and start to get future structures in place.

Storm dynasty not crumbling but long-term forecast uncertain with Munster set to follow stars out door

I 100% agree Panthers would smash the Storm at this stage, no arguments here, they are an absolutely monster of a team.

My point was more that during the slump that saw the Storm lose to a number of top 8 teams (3 of the 8 losses), they were missing their FB, HB, B Smith, Welch, and were on their 5th string winger/centre. To say they are flat track bullies as a result of 3 losses during this period isn’t correct though. Any team missing 5 starters plus 2 back ups will suffer in form.

Why Storm are NRL's flat-track bullies: How eight finals teams stack up against each other

The Storm that held Pwnrith to 16-0, that Storm right?

The argument of course is that Penrith were missing their half, 5/8 and fullback during that game, but that excuse runs true for Melbourne all season.

Look when they lost the 4 in a row (including the Raiders, Bunnies and Sharks), missing half, hooker and fullback, nevermind winger, back up winger and back up winger.

I don’t think they’ll win it all, other teams are too strong, but I think writing them off is risky. If they click, they can take it to anyone in the finals.

It’s entirely relevant to the discussion though. You stated that as Moses didn’t mean to do it, it shouldn’t matter. It’s the same for most incidents, youd like to hope no player means to injure another player, but it should be irrelevant to the discussion. As horrible as the McKinnon situation was, it was not deliberate, it was barely even careless by McLean to be fair. Yet he got 7 weeks. An act being deliberate should have no bearing on the punishment

The tui on john’s comment is pretty ridiculous, given they are on the same team. I’m sure McLean didn’t meant to paralyse McKinnon either. He still got 7 weeks.

I thought the ruling decisions of the MRC changed in 2022 to be this mess we are dealing with though.

That statement is a bit of a contradiction. Its on NAS, agreed, however if the rules dont exist to stop him, then from a technicality stand point, he doesn’t need to stop. Its like driving a car 10km under the limit to avoid speeding.

Does being deliberate matter though? He drover him down, great tackle, used his head under Kenny’s chin, not great.

I know the general belief is he is a grub, but do people truly believe Nelson tries to drive his elbow into peoples heads to injure them?

If its adjudicated consistently, then it was the correct call. A lot of people on here are whinging about NAS’s playing style and lack of punishment, but the NRL did this to themselves. Any other year, and yeah NAS is on the sideline by this stage, but the NRL couldn’t have players sitting out at finals time.

NAS is a rough player, and needs to tone it down, but its not his doing that see’s him not suspended, its the stupidty of the rules.

I am also curious to hear how driving with the head, which results in a player going off for a HIA isn’t even mentioned on here, but it wasn’t NAS so we don’t care….

It was good to see Munster barking orders from thr back, very Slater-esque. The storm have missed that with the revolving door fb position over the last 2 years.

'The right thing for the team': Bellamy mulls Munster to fullback as Storm shut out Panthers

I think that may have been me!

To be fair, 2021 Munster and 2022 Munster are almost two entirely different people. He should be an advert for clean living. Before and after effects

Munster magic inspires Melbourne win, but Hughes injury major worry

That was one of the few Storm games I’ve seen in Melbourne (coming from Penrith myself) and it was amazing! I had a broken leg, but lord knows I was standing for that game!

Ten years on, what can we learn from season 2012?

Also the last time the Storm lost 4 in a row (5 in a row actually) and still managed to win the premiership….

There is hope…..

Matt Burton would be my pick personally. He was much more potent with every touch than Luai was.

Freddy's Panthers obsession is what cost the Blues Origin

Punch a guy in the head, fine. Call the ref a cheat, suspended for 3 weeks…. 1 brings the game into disrepute, the other upsets the refs for pointing out incompetence.

Origin fall-out: Luai laughs off grub claims, brawlers escape bans, Gagai unrepentant, Fittler fumes over sin bin

I may be missing something, but the first punches both look loaded and flying at the same time time to me? The clips I’ve seen show that yeah, Gagai may have thrown first but Burton was in the motion as well.

KURT GIDLEY: Maroons deserved win, Blues weren't complacent but what was Burton meant to do after getting hit?

Curious, is that a shoulder charge in the footage there by Crichton? Shoulder lowered, no attempt at a tackle on first impact.

Origin 3 teams: How they'll line up after forced changes - Blues, Maroons make last-minute switches

I legit said that NSW are and were the better team, how is that salty? I am trying to explain the rationale behind the complaining. Thats ok, we’ll just do a Brad Fittler and complain to the refs through the week, demand it be rectified for the next game. Thats the way big boys coach right?

For the record, I had no idea the 6 again counts were on the NRL website.

REACTION: 'Sucked the juice out of Queensland' - Maroons battered by 'brutal' Blues after sin-bin 'gee up'

I think a lot of people are missing the big complaint on the sin bin. The sin bin penalty was fair, no doubt. It was the multitude of calls in the lead up that were questionable to say the least, starting with the 6 again against Munster for holding Paulo (who was still upright and moving forward) with the “no advantage” knock on, the escort penalty and the multitude of 6 again calls which no one seems to known what they are for. I personally have never seen an escort penalty and offside 6 again lead to a sin bin for holding down myself, as DCE stated, they are completely different yet Klien has magically lumped them as a single offence.

If the calls had being going both ways, there would be no question in it, but for some reason, the Blues were allowed to hold down all night, and it seemed like every tackle he was involved in, Paulo was flopping down after it was complete. Then there are the blocking plays on EVERY attacking kick that, despite Klien calling them out for, they still get away with every time. I would love to know the 6 again call counts, as I recall QLD getting 3 or 4 at most. Add to the fact that the NSW coach had a 1 on 1 session with the ref in charge, as well as a public whinge, and you can’t blame the fans for being a little dubious of the equality of the officiating.

That being said, NSW were far and above the better team and should win these games (there are what, 8 2021 Panthers in the team), it would just be better if it was done sans questionable reffing.

By that logic, Penrith are also collapsing, having lost to 6th place Parra.

Given the cowboys are 8 and 3, it is pretty disrespectful to say they are not the real deal. Given they have beaten the only team that beat both Penrith and the Storm (Parra), this must put them in discussion as a contender.

Passing Storm: Are Melbourne the 2020 Roosters reincarnate?

You reckon? I think its a hard position to rate, given the vast skill set and different styles on offer (B Smith is “prop” as well according to stats), but his impact is felt every game for sure, for both the Storm and the opponents. Given the way the Storm forwards have, for lack of a better term, sucked these past few weeks, you can see he is missed up front (considering how dominant they normally are)

Passing Storm: Are Melbourne the 2020 Roosters reincarnate?

A bit harsh on the Storm after only 2 losses to the 1st and 3rd palced teams, particularly when they were missing:
-Hughes (top 3 halfback)
-Pap (top 3 fullback)
-NAS (top 3 prop)

And that is only the players who went out just before that game. Add Smith, Jennings, Welsh and Meoroa to the list, and you are missing a world of talent. Compared to the Panthers, with zero injuries, and Cowboys, who had 1 out pre-game, and you can understand why they were smacked like they were.

Passing Storm: Are Melbourne the 2020 Roosters reincarnate?

So Pap isn’t allowed to play the Dragons anymore, that’s two games, and two major injuries…

NRL NEWS: Papenhuyzen out of Origin, Sharks duo cop bans, Annesley ‘no excuse’ for Kikau blunder

Very fair call, so I’ve dug a little deeper. I’ve picked 2010, 2021 and 2022 as my test seasons, looking at the first 7 rounds for information. I’ve selected 2010 for 3 reasons:
– Its close enough to the current time that teams play similarly (Storm football style)
– Its far enough that any significant changes will be apparent
– It was the first one that came to mind.

The data stacks up as follows:
2010- Total winning margin Rds 1-7
84, 73, 196, 104, 113, 151, 112

2021- Total winning margin rds 1-7
143, 105, 119, 209, 136, 111, 156

2022- total winning margin rds 1-7
76, 71, 87, 169, 107, 96, 188

What this shows is that while 2021 did have greater margins (979 total), 2022 is actually lower than 2010 (794 and 833 respectively). Looking at the data for each individual game (it doesn’t paste nicely sorry) in all 3 seasons, there are a few outliers in each round (the occasional blow-out, vs close game) but overall its pretty similar. In terms of blowouts (I took a score about 19 or 3 converted tried as a blowout) is was 18, 22 and 18 over the first 7 rounds for each year (2010, 2021 and 2022 respectively) or 32% vs 39%.

Purely observational, but I will call out that in 2010 vs 2021,2022 the scores were lower overall. I didn’t take overall score lines, kind of which I had to demonstrate what I saw.

TL/DR: For the first 7 rounds of 2021, we did see a greater average margin and a higher number of blow outs when compared to 2010. 2022 was the lowest margin, however number of blowouts was equal, suggesting when they are a blow out, its a bigger score line. (60 points is the biggest…go the Storm!)

Brown takes aim at 'easy option' players after Warriors suffer heaviest ever defeat

The Tigers beat the Eels last week (13th vs 3rd) the Bunnies this week (13th vs 8th) and the Dragons beat the Roosters (10th v 6th).

Blowouts have always happened in league, particularly when its a big gun vs a lower team (in 2010 the Storm beat the Warrios 40-6, the Cowboys 58-12 and the knights 34-4, all while playing for zero points), its just the way the game goes (ask the Bunnies in 2006 again the warriors , 66-0).

Brown takes aim at 'easy option' players after Warriors suffer heaviest ever defeat

Hughes is a constant though, always an 8 out of 10 in his performances. Munster can be a 10, but can also be a 2 or 3.
Hughes is thr player you want if your team is behind, Munster is thr player you want if your team is on top. A couple of kicking incidents would back me up.

Lowball offer could have snowball effect: Storm can’t afford to lose most influential star in Munster
