Cricket. And numbers.

Great stuff. He’ll get more much needed experience against the swinging Dukes, which is his weakness. If he can perform in England on this two-year deal it gives him the best chance to push for a spot in the 2023 Ashes team.

Aussie Handscomb gets Middlesex captaincy

Love this.

The resurgence of a forgotten quick

Okie dokie.

He needs more time. Hopefully will go back to Sussex and play more First Class cricket there too.

Yeah, more about wicketkeepers batting I suppose.

Sounds like an opportunity to write an article about wicketkeeping!

It isn’t that perplexing – a huge quantity of games at those NT venues would not break-even. Big name cricketers also have a pretty full calendar these days with international t20 leagues. I would love to see an NT team though! If we added an extra team or two, an additional opportunity could be bringing in one international signing per side to strengthen the quality.

I went to watch the 117 at Junction Oval, I’d probably discount that one. Getting bowled for 14 attempting to reverse scoop/sweep Labuschagne was horrendous given the match situation.

I would say Wade and Carey’s keeping is comparable. But again, impossible to know without watching every single ball of Shield or Test matches they keep in. Neat glovework doesn’t feature on scorecards and there are no metrics recorded that I can see. Healy does an interesting analysis of Wade’s keeping on youtube, seems pretty solid to me.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but I don’t know. Based on what?

Cricket.

If Paine retires within the next 18 months, Wade should be given the test wicketkeeping job until Carey improves his red ball record or someone else emerges.

I just don’t remember I suppose. That’s the problem with judging wicketkeepers. The mistakes you do remember stick in the mind, the ones you don’t are not visible on the scorecard.

The Bairstow/Buttler debate is a whole can of worms and reveals England selector Ed Smith’s muddled thinking. Ben Foakes is a better keeper than both of them and should be in the test XI.

Interesting.

This is bang on.

I’d loved to see a ‘missed catches / missed stumpings’ metric for keepers. Handcomb effected a handy run out in the test against Pakistan when covering for Wade. He also stumped Kumar Sangakkara in a match for Yorkshire against Surrey in the Royal London One Day Cup. Without watching tons of cricket matches, hard to know if he is a good keeper though. Talk to the state coaches perhaps? But they will be biased.

I think Handscomb could do the job. He has kept in different formats and conditions. Hard to judge his wicketkeeping without good metrics though.

Wade was dropped after the 2017 tour of Bangladesh where he scored 17 runs in 3 innings. I don’t recall him being a particularly bad wicketkeeper. I may be wrong of course, but the only metrics for wicketkeepers are catches/stumpings. What would be far more informative are missed catches/missed stumpings. I explained why I don’t think Carey is ready yet – his batting is not mature enough for red ball cricket. Yet. He has time to improve.

Has Wade ever performed poorly with the gloves at test level?

Australia needs to plan for its wicketkeeping future

None of them are ready yet, I’m suggesting Wade be given 3 or so years in the job. Who knows who will emerge as the best candidate after that?

Australia needs to plan for its wicketkeeping future

I agree – it is very difficult to compare wicketkeepers without metrics however. Who is the best keeper in the country do you think? Handscomb has kept ably at test level (1 match), and both Bancroft and Handscomb have first class experience keeping, and white ball cricket often requires a lot of keeping to spin.

His Shield record since 2017/18 is a mix of wicketkeeper and specialist batsman. I think his batting would be impacted by wicketkeeping, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t the best choice for the job after Paine retires.

Australia needs to plan for its wicketkeeping future

I think this is a really good point. Cricket is in desperate need for wicketkeeping metrics. Who would you say is the best wicketkeeper in Australia at the moment? It’s very difficult to say.
