I've tried my hand at everything rugby. My serious playing ceased 40 years ago. My social playing, Fifths with my brothers, finished 30 years ago. I've refed, managed and been a delegate to the QRFSU. I've taught rugby as a school subject to boys and girls and I am still coaching schoolboys with an old mate, Got to loves the 4th's. I agree with the old colonial powers, spread rugby and develop leaders for the future in the community. You don't have to be 1st XV or a rep player to be a leader.

Jezdexter, I appreciate your concern and wish I had an answer, not just for you but for Aus rugby in general. Kids won’t take on, or aspire to, roles that are continuously criticised. Praise the people courageous enough to take on the role and hopefully it will help to improve our national stocks.

I expect then Blink, that rather than take advantage of a religious based holiday, you were at work on Friday and will be on Monday.

Don’t forget the little Irishman who was at QANTAS, and pulled sponsorship anyway.

Didn’t mean to make it sound like I was having a go at anyone in particular Link. As for a twelve’s role, just this 15’s opinion. The other thing is that the Brum backline defence patterns were different to the patterns that Isaac Henry faced.
There’s nothing easy about SR.

Like being a 15, being a kicker is a job where you’re out there on your own. You’ve really got to want to do it. And once you decide to, you’ve really got to put the extra time in. Back in the amateur days, I’d kick with our 10 for the line and dropouts for 30 minutes after every training. I was lucky enough to work at a flexi-time job, so I’d leave work at lunchtime on a Friday, go home and cross the road to 4 fields, end on end, spend 45 minutes chasing Garry Owen’s and line kicking, both feet. I’d then spend another 75 minutes just on goal kicking, mainly from in front. You’ve got to kick them. And if you can kick straight from in front, you can kick straight from anywhere.

Get them out of the gym so much and working on those personal skills. And if they need a coach get someone who can work with the approach the player has. Don’t try to change the player.

Unfortunately, a number of coaches I’ve spoken to reflect my own coaching experiences. Youngsters don’t seem to want to spend the extra time required.

Sorry for the rant. I was just an average club kicker, but all the work did help to win an U19 second division premiership.

Thanks SA. Like you, tired of the unsubstantiated claims. That’s some stat, and from impartial Ch 9. Who’d have thought? 😂 😂

Noah’s kicking the difference? Or, with three tries to two, was it the Reds lack of kicking?

Played 8 years for the Tahs, his last two for the Brums, coached the Tahs to SR final and won SR coaching the Reds.

Two out of three tries MJ.

Well S-B, I was there last night. I didn’t see the bad passing you describe. You’ve asked the question because I presume you think you have the answer. I’d love to see proof of these claims.

But will he keep that X-factor level up next week, month, for the season? And how’s the other half of his game, you know, defence?

'It was brutal': Clutch Lolesio kicks Brumbies to 'Test match intensity' win over Reds as Wright shines again

G’day M88. I’ve been saying the same about HS for the last 5 years. I’m afraid that we’ll be saying that HS is one of the best 12s never to have been given a Wallaby jersey. I say “given” because I genuinely believe he has earnt the opportunity.

'It was brutal': Clutch Lolesio kicks Brumbies to 'Test match intensity' win over Reds as Wright shines again

If he stopped fantasising about 15 and concentrated on the wing he could be world class. He certainly is when players like Jock Campbell are able to help get him into good support positions. He’s a winger. Let him run “for the corner”. If he doesn’t get there, be in support to clean out and maintain the momentum.

G’day John. I’d just like to remind people of the following, Matt Bourke, Rodger Gould, Jeff McLean, John Eales. You don’t have to be a 10 to be Wallabies’s kicker.

Even if it was, they still needed a Queenslander to captain the side. 😱 😂 😂

That’s why Harry Wilson’s numbers have been so bad for the last couple of years. 😡

You think RA can afford an Aus A? Again, they should be doing a Pacific Rim tour, but will RA have the dollars?

'It was brutal': Clutch Lolesio kicks Brumbies to 'Test match intensity' win over Reds as Wright shines again

Couple of things. Is HP’s job to draw multiple defenders, take the ball in and make it available for quick recycle to the overlap coming round the corner, a mini-Kerevi if you will? Not something I necessarily agree with. Or, as others have stated here, the Brums backline defence was “up in the face”, so rather than push the ball out into a worse position, he simply takes the ball up to reset? Easy to say what you think should happen from the stands, usually very different out there.

'It was brutal': Clutch Lolesio kicks Brumbies to 'Test match intensity' win over Reds as Wright shines again

Kicked too long? By half a roll of the ball. Perhaps that kick to the left corner might have proved more prudent, but it’s a ball that doesn’t always bounce the way you want.

'It was brutal': Clutch Lolesio kicks Brumbies to 'Test match intensity' win over Reds as Wright shines again

Maybe we concentrate too much on the attack. Wilson’s pretty handy on the dirty defence work too. Thanks for the reply.

G’day Lebowski. One of the nice things about Brisbane is the almost zero coverage of rugby in the mass media. I’m very hopeful that after stints with two other international teams that he is a man of his own mind, and a pretty good mind at that. And if we add Nucifora’s support, I don’t think the media, or the usual informed and influential Roar postings, are going to have any influence on selections. 😂 😂

'Hang on': Forgotten Wallaby tipped for big year as Wright reveals 'biggest work-on'

G’day Christie. I am stunned, but not surprised, that in your list of potential 15s you didn’t even mention Jock Campbell. He is one, of two players, who suffered more than any others, from the
anti-Thorn push that persisted for the length of his tenure, and seems to have developed a life of its own. Of all the qualities mentioned, JC is the most consistent. He may not have the x-factor, but x-factor hasn’t won us too many tests lately. His decision making on counter is better than any other in Aus, and that allows him to also set up support players. (Some of Petaia’s best work has come as a result of JC’s initiation.)

So who is the other player, I hear you ask. The answer is the player who organised the downfall of the Reds backline last week. Can’t decide on a 12? Look no further than Hamish Stewart. Like Campbell, all sorts of excuses were made to discourage even thinking about HS. But really, what Australian 12, or even kiwi, has constantly out-played, over-run or dominated Stewart in any game, let alone a season?

If you want flash at 10, 11, 13 and 14 then you need steadying influences at 12 and 15. Stewart and Campbell provide that in spades.

'Hang on': Forgotten Wallaby tipped for big year as Wright reveals 'biggest work-on'

As if this game wasn’t enough to interest us on its own, you have to go and tease us with a quality article. Well, thank you John. 😱 It is unfortunate though that the head-to-head, Wilson-Valentini won’t go ahead. Having said that, the Wright-Valentini might just be worth the price of admission itself. Previously, I’ve said that if RV had to be in the Wallabies it should be at 6 , taking the ball up in tight as he already does. That would allow Wilson to play the wide 8 using the footwork and hands that he has.

But the way LW is playing, plus his leadership skills, makes it clear that nothing about the Wallaby back three can be thought of as any where near certain.

Looks like my son and I, and anyone else smart enough to buy a ticket, are in for one very entertaining evening on Saturday at Lang Park.
