A Hawthorn supporter from birth, where it’s said one of my first words was 'Buckenara’, where the clubs tribulations of the 90’s and the playground taunts formed the man I am today. An avid Union fan since 2003, and now Rebels fan, but still a lot to learn of the game, and an Australian approach to cricket.

I like your last point. I didn’t consider it that way.
I have to say though I’m getting a bit confused about how a tackler needs to conduct themselves. I heard that the directive was that if when rolling the tackled guy you roll underneath them so they land on the tackler so it softens the blow. This is what Sicily did but got three. I know he had a previous suspension and that might have come into it but I felt three was too tough, and not sure what message it sends.

That’s the point, she is a journalist, while Cornes is a pundit and a media personality.

It’s an important distinction

I quite like Cornes, if you put your dislike for him to the side he does make some good points. I’d rather listen to him than David King.

It’s interesting when you put up other coaches and compare them to Bevo. I do think Cornes has a good point though, they have the list to be top four and I don’t think Bevo is coaching them well. I’d love to see the Dogs come in and snare Hardwick from under the Suns’ noses – and imagine what he’d do there!

I don’t think a clear out is the right idea, they’ve done that more than once I’m the last few years. I think they should stick with the coach, show they have all the support they need.

Mathieson leaving the board has more to do with his uncle than anything else.

As for McKay, I don’t think he can be traded. AND his lucrative $1m/year doesn’t start till next year! I think they need to get him right, get his confidence up

Tasmania doesn't need a new stadium - shame on the AFL for forcing us into building one

I also read/heard that post the Adelaide enquiry, the AFL learnt a lesson and are carefully selecting the panel. I think with the Adelaide one the panel were all withe ex-cops so some of the respondents didn’t feel comfortable talking.

Oh, yes, I agree with that. The point that I was making was that you have the ref and the TMO being really pedantic on somethings, but I have never seen a 9 throw a ball into the scrum for the hookers to compete for.

It’s funny you say that about refs being too pedantic, which I certainly agree with, but it winds me up when you see all this time wasted setting a scrum only for the 9 to feed it in under the flankers chest and there’s no possibility for the hookers to even contest the ball. They can be really pedantic on a forward pass or rocking and rolling a ball grounding, but they aren’t policing the contest

Following the Melbourne Bledisloe I match I watched on youtube a vid from the Breakdown, they were talking about the Foley time wasting decision, but the discussion quickly moved into that of stoppages and the flow of the game. They had a graphic of the first half: it was 51:50 mins duration, there were 12 first half penalties, three yellow cards, but there was only 12:13 of actual play (WB 5:37 time in possession, AB 6:36 time in possession). It’s nice to see that even the New Zealanders are asking where is international rugby going.

I don’t know if this is out of line with what you guys are chatting about but take Jordan Lewis, he appears as a regular on panel shows and is introduced as ‘ four-time GF winner, Jordan Lewis’ which gives his comments gravity… now, he was a very good footballer, but I don’t consider him anywhere as good a footballer as Dangerfield, and his introduction on any panel won’t be as good as Jordan’s.

Not sure why I’m bringing it up here, but it made me think of perception

I think you’re wrong on Russell Jackson. Reading what he’s done on the ABC, he has integrity.

Didn’t you read the article in the ABC? It’s more than one.. and their partners.

yup. I logged on to the Roar to catch up on the footy news and Tim Miller’s article was the first I saw of this. I checked out Rusty’s article on the ABC and then this… I’m a Hawks fan from birth and cannot believe what I’m reading. I’m still trying to digest it, but you seem to have summed it up for me.

For me, I get that we have to get all sides of the story, but the sheer number of people who have made allegations and how nasty they are, this is a sad sad situation.

Hey Nick, wanted to know, what did you think of the ‘foot brake’ law trial in the scrum. I think the Scots had some difficulty, especially after ‘setting’. I think it’s good to get the hooker more upright as this encourages, but it’s got me thinking, having this offset footing does this increase the risk of the scrum wheeling or shearing?

'Mack the knife' in Dublin and Braveheart Scots: In-depth Six Nations analysis

There’s been a lot said about this substitution and if this was a pre-decided move – my feeling is that with Farrell out for the foreseeable and not having played much this year, Jones is making sure that he has the role covered. And it’s not as if Ford is untested at this level. Also, just before he went off I think Smith made a kicking error, trying to get too much? Either way, I don’t think Jones made a totally bad decision.

Sorry, I was adding to your point… I recall the time they tried it and there was a bit of outrage.

The run home: Who'll be in the eight when it matters?

I agree. So many people say “oh, it happens in every game”… but what it does is it removes the contest for us. These are the elite of the sport and I want to watch them taking each other on, and not winning a contest through niggling.

I recall the Merrett hit on Silvagni a month or so ago: Merret couldn’t catch him until Silvagni kicked the ball, and even then it was one of those poxy swing-arm punches on him from behind which cracked Silvagni’s rib. THEN people criticise Silvagni for being weak!

I agree, he’s got a good temperament for being both a back line player and as the captain. I’m a fan of his unassuming game. You say about him not having a bad game, I immediately thought of Brisbane, but I think the Lions went in floods to overwhelm the mids making it difficult to contain them… i.e. can’t really put it down to him having a bad game.

As a Port fan, what do you think of Motlop’s season so far? In the couple of games I’ve seen, you could go a quarter without hearing his name or seeing much involvement from him.

Port Adelaide player of the week: Tom Jonas

As you describe it, the term ‘coach’ as we know it in football is becoming in someway redundant – it’s more of a ‘manager’ role as seen in association football, especially here in the UK.

I’m not too sure though of the role of an analyst in a more permanent capacity – yes I see the virtue of it, especially if they are accountable to the board, but my fear would be a move towards consensus management.
