Ardie Savea is shoving defenders out of the way. Absolute menace with ball in hand. Canes kick but it’s too deep. 22m dropout for the Brumbies. Beauden Barrett foes high. Lealiifano claims and puts on a step. Big defence in midfield. Hawera puts up a bomb and Jordie claims despite Speight in close proximity. Horrendous kick yet again from the Brumbies. Both sides surrending possession cheaply.

PEN GOAL! Hurricanes
Sio looked to have the turnover but it’s deemed hands in the ruck. 50/50 call, as with most breakdowns I suppose. All the play with the Canes at the moment. Jordie Barrett slots the pen.

Rory Arnold is off. He’s done a mountain of work tonight. Blake Enever on. Big scrum here. Perenara clears it in time. Brumbies win the turnover and Cubelli belts it clear up towards the 10m line. Coles throws a ropey lineout and Savea almost certainly knocked on. It’s play on though. No respite for the Brums. Several phases in tight. Up around the 22.

The Canes are hunting again. The Brumbies knock it on in contact and the visitors will have another scrum. Seems just a matter of time until the Kiwis break through.

Coles finds Fifita. Tight defence. Now Cubelli pinches it and is bouncing around, ducking and weaving. They need to get out of here. Box kick into touch around 20 out. They’re going nowhere at the moment.

Ardie Savea attracts a few defenders. Chip kick over the top and Cubelli takes a screamer back over his shoulder and calls the mark. They’re out of the 22 for now. Milner-Skudder spreads to Goosen. Shields drops a shoulder. Quick hands in tight space down the right. Penalty advantage. Lousi loses possession but we come back for the penalty. Perenara dribbles it into touch 5 metres out.

Scrum reset. Jackson lays down the law, or something like it. The steam cloud from both sets of forward billows. Scrum is steady. Hawera almost charged down by Fifita but he gets it out of play. Still in the 22.

Agreed. Too much wasted possession. Hawera is an absolute criminal atm.

Brumbies starting to lose a bit of composure. A few errors creeping in. Tomas Cubelli is on for Powell. Canes attack through Laumape again. Plenty of leg drive but he’s caught high and the Brumbies win the scrum. They’re still pinned deep in their own territory though.

News for the sheds is that Lealiifano for Dargaville was just a straight swap. Unless the winger was injured, it’s a strange one. He was on fire. Fardy is on the right wing and puts it on the toe. Barrett clears and the Brumbies are on the charge once again. They’re a little overzealous at the breakdown and go off their feet. Penalty Hurricanes.

Toomaga-Allen has served his time and Canes are back to 15. Perenara celebrates by putting the ball out on the full. Brums lineout. Good metres in midfield. Hawera can’t shake his grubber addiction and surrenders good possession again. Powell finds touch 25 out now.

PEN GOAL! Hurricanes
The Canes are still down a man with Toomaga-Allen in the bin. But they’re hot on attack. They’re hitting it up under the posts. Penalty advantage, and just as well, because the Barrett brothers share a forward pass. On replay the pass looked fine and Jordie was clean through. Bad call. Canes point to the sticks. Gimme penalty goal. It’s over.

The Saveas are dual wrecking balls in midfield but now Fardy swoops and wins one back. Penalty to the Brums. Hawera misses touch by some distance. Terrible mistake at this stage. Milner-Skudder is tackled. Now Fifita strides out down the left. Big run. The Brumbies are reeling and Alcock is tackled in goal. Canes attacking scrum.

And we’re back. Hey now! Christian Lealiifano is on the park! Early sub, and it’s all to play for. Barrett kicks off. Carter coughs up in the 22. Big pressure here, Perenara goes close to scoring. Alcock smothers a pass and the Brumbies are relieved to clear.

It’s a good question. Obviously they’re trying to crack down on any high contact these days. The ref conceded it wasn’t intentional, but still dangerous. It’s a split-second thing. But maybe defenders have to be a little more circumspect when the ball-runner is already in the process of being tackled.

Only 2 handling errors for each side. It’s a mighty relief after the last few Aussie games I’ve had to call.
Who are the MVPs so far? Dargaville has been full of running for the Brums. Laumape and Ardie Savea seem to be asking the most questions for the visitors.

HALF-TIME
The Brumbies started well, keeping the ball in hand and starving the Hurricanes of possession. Tries to Dargaville and Mann-Rea for the home side. The Canes hit back with a slick effort from Goosen and a bizarre falcon-assisted try for Jordie Barrett. Big second 40 coming up.

Time for a PSA to remind everyone that the Brumbies led at half-time in Wellington earlier this year and ended up losing 56-21. Still, they’ve shown up to play tonight.

Fair point. I reckon the refs are very selective on that call after a few in a row.

Another penalty at the lineout. The Brumbies sucked them into it, holding the catcher up high and the Canes were all over him. Dangerous stuff. They go for the lineout maul again. It’s a real mess as the Canes desperate to stop it. They finally do. It’s pick and drive from Alcock but looks to be held up. That’s the first 40 for you. What a game.

YELLOW CARD! Hurricanes
It’s a shoulder to the head. Glen Jackson is going to the pocket. Hawera was falling into the contact so it’s just a yellow, not a red. Hawera shakes it off and finds touch inside the 22.

Ardie Savea claims the kick-off, after dropping it. Play on. Now it’s quick hands from Barrett to Julian Savea. They kick ahead and the Brumbies win a penalty. They’re out of kicking range. They’ll try to clear deep into touch and have a final crack you’d think. Hawera is down injured, copped a big hit. Could be trouble for the Canes on review. The crowd are adding some boos for good measure.

Julian Savea gets a wind up and is brought down. Now quick ball down the right. Coles shows what he’s about, steps through a tackle draws the fullback and lays it on a plate for Perenara. Welcome back Dane Coles.
