Yeah I don’t really understand why they’re not giving Hodge full-time goalkicking duties. Foley’s looking pretty shaky at the moment and I’d rather they didn’t chop and change it throughout the game.
Five talking points from Australia's loss to England
I didn’t say Hooper’s disallowed try was 50/50. That was the correct call. I was talking about the Daly try and the Moore obstruction on Koro’s effort. If we accept Moore was obstructing, the play has to come back for a Wallabies penalty for offside from the previous ruck.
Five talking points from Australia's loss to England
True. Probably should’ve given a shout out to the scrum. That was a big plus.

My apologies. Next time I’ll go with 5 obscure facts to entertain Scott.
Five talking points from Australia's loss to England
To be clear, the Wallabies played terribly and deserved to lose. I wrote this at 5am and didn’t want it to descend into a ref bashing piece. But the inconsistency was astounding at times. Maul collapsing and offsides were policed very one-sidedly until the last quarter of the match.
Five talking points from Australia's loss to England
Farrell opted out of the tackle despite Moore being on the opposite side of him. Robshaw was several metres offside from that ruck so if you really wanted the letter of the law, a penalty try could have been awarded.
Five talking points from Australia's loss to England
Dempsey would be 6 if he was fit. Hanigan is a toiler but probably running out of gas. He wasn’t even meant to be first string for the Tahs this year, though his line out work is very tidy. Timani hasn’t really shown enough in his cameos. McCalman probably knocking on the door to get a start though.
Five talking points from Wales vs Wallabies
I think the difference is that if the defender has read the play and got in a position to make an intercept, then well done to them. Whereas the deliberate knockdown is usually a desperate/cynical attempt to shut down an overlap.
I see the logic in the rule, but I agree that it’s usually adjudicated on very poorly. More often than not, the defender is making a genuine play for the ball, whether it’s a direct catch or to knock it up for themselves to regather.
Five talking points from Wales vs Wallabies
Fair point. At the end of the game especially it was the right play to try and pin them down there. But I’d like to see a bit more variety in general.
Five talking points from Wales vs Wallabies
Definitely a few too many aimless bombs in midfield. Invited pressure back onto us too easily.

Looking around for an update. Can’t find anything yet. Hope he’s alright. They’re always very careful about moving players with neck injuries so let’s hope it wasn’t as bad as it looked.
Five talking points from Wallabies vs All Blacks Bledisloe 3
Absolutely. That’s probably the main hole in the squad at the moment. Quade’s always been more of an X factor than someone you’d trust to control a tight game in the last 20.
Theoretically Beale and Hodge are also capable at 10, but they’re great in their current roles. Has there been a standout 10 in the NRC (I haven’t been watching enough of it)?
Five talking points from Wallabies vs All Blacks Bledisloe 3
I loved the jersey too. Whether they adopt it long term or for a few tests a year, that’d be great. I had goosebumps during the welcome to country.

He’s really impressed me this year, as a player, but also particularly well spoken after each game.

Thanks for your company on the blog tonight. Congratulations to Hurricanes fans. They’ve been a cut above all season. Commiserations to the Brumbies, but they gave it a red hot go, particularly in the first half.
Match summary up shortly.

FULL-TIME
The Brumbies were quick out of the gate with tries to Dargaville and Mann-Rea, but just couldn’t hang in when the Hurricanes turned the screws in the second half. The Canes struck through Goosen (2), Jordie Barrett, and Perenara. Congratulations to the Wellington boys who go again next week.
Lovely touch from TJ Perenara in the post-game interview who gives a sincere shoutout to Lealiifano for his comeback to the game.

HURRICANES WIN
Hawera decides to run. Throws a loose pass and the Canes are back with it. Tame crossfield kick to Coles who shovels it into touch. Brumbies lineout. Final play. The hooter has sounded. Speight takes the tackle in midfield and it’s turned over again. It’s not over yet though. Enterprising stuff from the Canes. First Tahuriorangi through a giant hole, then Uhila getting involved. Finally it’s into touch and Jackson blows the whistle.

TRY! Hurricanes
Andrew Smith finds space and offloads. The Brums finally found some metres but turn it over immediately. Canes kick deep into the corner. Speight plays twinkletoes with the touchline. It’s ragged stuff now. There’s finally some running rugby from the Brums but progress is hard to come by. Abel throws a stinker of a pass, almost reluctantly intercepted by Jordie Barrett. Simple pass to Goosen to score his second. Barrett converts.

Barrett to Barrett and Jordie can’t hang on. Kuridrani was the man to force the error but he went into the contact awkwardly. Brumbies scrum around the 22. They haven’t been able to get any kind of foothold in the second half. Completely ground down by relentless Hurricanes pressure.
Kuridrani off. Jackson-Hope on.

New front row for the Brums. Makin knocks on. After clinging on this whole half, they look just about done here. Hurricanes scrum. Milner-Skudder makes easy metres. Makin flies in with a textbook tackle. The Canes are back at base camp in the Brumbies 22. The crossfield kick finally makes an appearance but Banks is up to it. Calls the mark and clears.

To be fair, Anderson took 55 wickets at 17.58 in 2017. Plus he found some mojo in Australia, albeit often in the second innings.
Cummins only 29 wickets at 29.79. Boult and Wagner pretty solid but the Kiwis never seem to play enough cricket. Steyn didn’t play a game in 2017, recovering from shoulder surgery. Now he’s gone again.
