“Since 2003, the AFL has marketed one round each year as the Heritage Round. Until 2006 Fremantle wore a white guernsey with 3 red chevrons, to emulate the jumper worn by the original Fremantle Football Club in 1885.”

Straight from the Fremantle FC page on Wikipedia.

If that’s not correct I suggest you update it and provide the refernce link.

Fremantle's transformation is complete

Can’t help but be impressed by the ruthlessness of Fremantle in the past year. They get Lyon (a fantastic coach who gets teams into Grand Finals- let’s not forget before the Saints, he was a key figure in the Swans premiership and finals success) and now they make bold statements about luring Cloke and Goddard. ‘Old’ Fremantle would never do such a thing.

If the Dockers can get Brendon Goddard- he could be the icing on the cake!

Success comes at a price, it seems that Fremantle finally understand that.

On the jumper- I think it’s one of the best. Incorporates the history of football in Fremantle and looks good.

Fremantle's transformation is complete

Couldn’t agree with you more on that comment. Also, at 29 I don’t think Thornton has that much football left in him. Besides, we have seen this before with Fremantle, taking ‘should-be-retired-already’ players from other clubs. Mark Johnson, Jarrad Schofield just to name two.

Thornton has been a serviceable player for the Blues- if his time there is up, the only place he should end up is at GWS- if as they have stated already would be looking to add some more senior experience to their list, that said there could be many younger delisted players with such experience and thus making it difficult for Thornton.

As for Kane Lucas- I’d be interested to know where the author found his information that he was ‘certain to move’- I’d hope there is some fact to back that statement up and not base it purley on the number of games he played (he was also injured this year as well). Lucas might thrive and be given more opporunitues under a new coach.

Ok Carlton, it's time to be out with the Blues

I agree with the majority of players in the article. The ones I would differ on are:

Timberwolves: Brandon Roy.
There might not be a more ‘watched player’ than Roy in 2012-13. Not that he is going to turn the Wolves into an instant contender- it’s just that if Rubio comes back healthy, Love has another consistant year, Kirilenko produces something half decent then Roy becomes the X factor in this team. Roy is one of those players with all the potential in the world and injury runied him early on- I think all eyes will be on him this season.

Suns: Michael Beasly,
Another guy with a load of potentital that has gone unfulfilled for different reasons to Roy. The Heat parted with him, The Wolves parted with him- this is his last chance to make something of himself. He needs to establish himself as a leader on this team.

NBA players to watch this season: Part two

That would be the case in the Tony Modra situation. In 1997 he was an All Australian and the Coleman Medalist- only to do an ACL in the preliminary final and miss the big one (and the majoirty of 1998). He isn’t considered a premiership player but a valid argument could be made that the Crows may not have been there in the first place if it wasn’t for him.

Should entire AFL lists get premiership medals?

Scott Burns is the Eagles top assistant. Peter Sumich joined Fremantle at the start of 2012.

Carlton appear set for a Ratten-Malthouse swap

As much as I’d like to see him continue in the AFL, I hope he doesn’t end up at Port Adelaide. He would end up in the same postion he is in now 2-3 years down the track.

As unlikely (and as bitter) as this would be, imagine if he remained at Carlton along side Malthouse. That could be the best combo in the competition!

With all the expectations on Carlton this year, removing Ratten and installing Malthouse- the Blues must have a top 4 finish next season and be a genuine threat for the flag. Mick isn’t going to get 3 or 4 seasons to turn them into a premiership contender.

Carlton appear set for a Ratten-Malthouse swap

There are number of other New Orleans Hornets we should be watching more than Greivis Vasquez.

Ryan Anderson, Robin Lopez and Eric Gordon are three of them. If Lopez and Gordon have big years, combined with Davis and Rivers- throw in Ryan Anderson doing what he did in Orlando for the past couple of seasons and the Hornets become a playoff team in the West.

Anderson and Lopez would be my ‘ones to watch’.

If Al-Farouq Aminu can keep getting better this is going to be a good team to watch in 2012-13.

NBA players to watch this season: Part two

I think Fremantle have a better chance at getting Goddard than Carlton. The Dockers are on the rise and the Ross Lyon connection isn’t lost on anyone.

Goddard is either in the midfield or running off the wing and half back. Carlton have enough of those types of players. Scotland, Gibbs, Robinson- they would be better spending their money elsewhere.

Not sure Andrew Embley would leave the West Coast Eagles either, not at this stage of his career.

One free agent your club would love to have

Ross Lyon has built this season around ‘anyone, anywhere, anytime’ or something along those lines.

If Fremantle are in the position to do so they should thrash Melbourne, remain in seventh spot and go to Melbourne the week after full of confidence.

Who will win the Coleman Medal?

This is going to be excellent!

I’m a long time user of the NBA League Pass and that is a fantastic set up, especially with the time difference in the states. To be able to watch your team play every game is something the NBL hasn’t had for years (could be over a decade). As a long time Perth Wildcat fan (and season member) this will give me the chance to watch all away games which haven’t always been shown in the past and sometimes when they are it is at an obscure time. With this, I’ll be able to watch them live or when I want to. Being able to come home and have the option to watch telecast of the game I’ve just attended is also appealing.

Well done NBL! It’s this line of thinking that will continue to grow the league and the game in Australia.

NBL goes it alone for broadcast deal

A few weeks ago I read about Deng being on the trade table or not feeling confident he would remain a Bull. If that’s the case and he plays against the weight of uncertainity (like Gasol last season).

Personally, if they are going to be without Rose for the most part of the season (with some suggesting he will be out the whole year) the Bulls need to keep a player like Deng around. I haven’t had a look yet, but would be interested to see his contract status. He is the sort of player that a handful of teams would throw big money at if the Bulls under value him.

Fremantle v West Coast is a better win for the AFL than West Coast v Carlton in Perth.

With the way both sides are playing, it wiill be a better game too.

Carlton back in the AFL finals hunt

If West Coast win this week they will go into fourth spot. They will need to hope that Essendon beat Collingwood next week to stay there as it’s unlikely the Eagles will beat Hawthorn in the last round.

North have GWS next week- assume that’s a given and they win this week against the Dockers the would be in fifth spot, West Coast could drop as low as seventh depending on other results.

If the Eagles win one of their next two games then North would need to make up percentage to take over fifth spot from West Coast.

Carlton back in the AFL finals hunt

That’s true, I guess a lot of people are expecting West Coast to beat Collingwood this week and possibly take fourth spot by the end of the season. I think last week might have been a huge wake up call for the Magpies and I don’t believe that the Eagles are as good as many people think.

First week of the finals should be West Coast v Carlton/Fremantle.

I think both of those teams could beat West Coast in the first week.

Carlton back in the AFL finals hunt

Everyone says that North is due for a loss- unless you barrack for North Melbourne (and probably even if you do) that ‘due loss’ was probably expected to come last week.

The Dockers record in Melbourne this year has been better than previously- the two wins at Etihad againts the Saints and the Demons were good wins but neither of those teams are in or have been in the form that North Melbourne have been this season.

Personally, I think it is going to be a much closer game than expected and I wouldn’t be surpised if Fremantle got the win- they have a solid in form team, just they are playing a side in better form and playing at home.

Carlton back in the AFL finals hunt

Carlton v St. Killda is going to be just as important and Fremantle v North Melbourne when talking about who gets that eighth spot.

Even if Carlton win by 100pts this week and Freo lose against North the Blues are still going to have to beat St. Kilda to get in. Fremantle can beat Melbourne by a point in the last round and get through a game ahead of Carlton.

I think the Blues will beat the Saints this time but it’s not going to be a walk in the park for Carlton.

Carlton back in the AFL finals hunt

At the time it seemed like a great deal for Fremantle because Tarrant was an upgrade over Medhurst- but you’re right, Paul went on to play his best football while at Collingwood and they ended up getting a top defender back when he returned.

The original deal also landed Collingwood the number 8 pick which they used to select Ben Reid- so the more you look at it long term this was better for Collingwood.

The Dockers ended up with Viv Michie and Josh Mellington.

Collingwood hopes to end Tarrant's career with a premiership

I don’t think they would kick with such accuracy at the MGC. Since the game against Carlton where they kicked 24.5, they have only played once at the MCG.

Round 21- 13.13
Round 20- 15.10
Round 19- 18.7
Round 18- 19.13
Round 17- 15.13 (MCG)
Round 16- 24.5 (v Carlton)

It’s would be fair to assume they were just having ‘one of those nights’ against Carlton. While far more accurate in front of goal than most- what impact does the roof have on this accuracy?

Carlton kicked 24.12 this week at the MCG.

Carlton back in the AFL finals hunt

I agree with you, at the MCG it will be a very different game than the one played at Etihad a few weeks ago. Carlton are in much better form than they were then (aside from beating Collingwood the week before, their form for the middle part of the season was below expectations). A Collingwood/Carlton semi-final would be a great game and could go either way depending on what Collingwood team showed up to play.

If Carlton can keep this current group healthy and together and continue to develop guys like Casboult, Bell and the other guys that have made their debuts this season, the Blues are going to be a premiership threat for the next five or so years.

Thanks for the comment!

I don’t like your chances of winning the 2013 flag- but then again West Coast went from 14th in 2010 to deep in the finals 12 months later so anything can happen.

The Saint’s have a good upside and if they can use their money wisely and maybe attract some other established players to go along side Reiwot and Goodard I think they can be a threat.

Personally, I do believe St. Kilda should look at trading (or at least see what they can get) for Montanga and Dal Santo. They need another ruckman and at least one more key defender.

Coaches likely to stay for 2013

Thanks for the comment. I think the Blues showed last weekend exactly what they can do on their day. Ratten needs to remain in the job and he needs a full public backing of the club to say he will be there until at least the end of his current contract. Let him focus on the game and not on his job!

Coaches likely to stay for 2013

Absolutley, Fremantle have control over their season and the Blues don’t.

With the way North Melbourne have been playing and taking in to account the way they play at Etihad against the way Fremantle have it’s fair to assume North willl get the win here and thus giving control to Carlton (should they beat, as expected, the Gold Coast).

As a long time member of the Fremantle Dockers I will be watching with the hope they come out and play the best game they’ve played in years against the ‘Roos’ and seal a finals spot.

Carlton back in the AFL finals hunt

The last minutes of the final last year vs West Coast could be up there as the biggest umpriring blunders of last season. Walker should have been paid the free kick.

It’s easy to speculate but to pay a free kick in the goal sqaure to the opposition which would seal the result and end the season of the Eagles- I can’t see any umpire doing that, which is a huge shame because it was clearly there.

The Blues had their chances throughout but should be dirty over that call.

I attended the game vs West Coast this season- I can’t say the umpring was much better. Although should Carlton finish 8th and play West Coast in Perth- i don’t think it will be a walk in the park for the Eagles.

The 76ers also recevied Josh McRoberts and guard Christian Eyenga from the Lakers in this deal. The Magic receive five draft picks- not four as mentioned above. Three first round and two second round selections.
