No real surprises in the selections. I wonder if Collingwood should have named John Noble in the starting line-up. He has played consistently well over the last four years. He must be terribly disappointed to be among the emergencies.

AFL grand final teams: Lions' Payne-ful call on defender, Pies make shock sub call

Congratulations lads for tonight’s efforts. I am a bit concerned about McStay’s injury. Is it a knee or ankle? Will we opt for Billy Frampton or Nathan Kreuger? I wouldn’t mind throwing either of them into defence or attack. Perhaps Jeremy Howe can take a few close to goal and give some impetus to the firing line. What are your thoughts gentlemen? Height and agility required?

Finals Fix: The Pies were down and out in the prelim. How they turned it around is the stuff of greatness

There is one thing that is interesting from my perspective. Do you think making four changes to a first semi-final winning team is a good or a bad thing? Will it give fresh legs and impetus to the team concerned or could it upset the apple cart? I think it’s the only way they can beat Brisbane in Brisbane. What do you think?

Blues and Giants have had seasons out of a storybook - but can either get their happy ending?

Jock McHale and Norm Smith have achieved more during finals than Ron Barassi. Besides, he was a divisive figure not unknown to making untimely statements in public in the hope of influencing umpires prior to and during finals series. Most certainly, that is not what the Premiership Cup should be all about. I agree that it’s just a cheap knee-jerk reaction during the finals to appease the dissatisfied Demons supporters and the football establishment. No way Jose!!!

COMMENT: It's time for the AFL to immortalise Ron Barassi - and only one prize is worthy of his name

Frampton is a must against the tall Brisbane set up if we make the Grand Final.

Could Daicos' return backfire on the Pies? Five burning questions ahead of AFL preliminary finals

The two Preliminary Finals make for another Carlton vs Collingwood Grand Final which is what the AFL is quietly hoping for. The Maggies need to play Nick Daicos regardless of the outcome of the game. If they win, he’ll be in better shape for the Grand Final. If they lose, then they’ll have to go away and recruit some height and runners in the trade period. Besides, not having Taylor Adams again during a finals series is worrying to say the least. I feel that John Noble ought to be on the bench come what may. As for the other Preliminary Final, Carlton is in just outstanding form and could do the impossible by beating the hometown favourites. I have a feeling that there could be an upset in one of the two Preliminary Finals and the team that wins by the smallest margin may go on to win the big prize in eleven days. The last time two teams from the 5th-8th places made the Preliminary Finals was in 2014 and on that occasion the Swans having won comfortably the week before the Grand Final were beaten convincingly by Hawthorn who only just scraped it in against Port Adelaide. Carlton vs Collingwood Grand Final looms and it’s up to Brisbane and GWS to ruin AFL plans.

That was another incident! O´Dea´s hit on Greening at Moorabbin was even worse!

'Wanted to hit, wanted to hurt': Brayden Maynard - the guilty man found innocent

The Princess Park Brawl-They all got let off on an umpiring technicality. Why? Because the Blue baggers stood to lose more players than we did.

What I am inferring is this: Get rid of the grey areas and create a fair and equitable tribunal system that will ensure both player safety and a better sporting spectacle. Carlton and Richmond have done very well over the last fifty to sixty years and they shouldn’t be preaching to anyone! Do you want me to enumerate their player indiscretions? Let’s just leave sleeping dogs lie. Our friends from the other leagues and expansion clubs are probably not cognizant of what I am saying, but fellow Victorians would know all too well what I mean.

Do the subscribers to this webpage know why Collingwood is hated so much? The Magpies are the only team to have won four in a row. Moreover, by knocking out Carlton in 1980 they prevented them from winning four in a row (1979;1981;1982). They won the flag in 1990 and that meant that Hawthorn were in a similar position having won in 1988; 1989; 1991. Now, our “beloved” neighbours Richmond suffered a similar fate in 2018. Remember that they won in 2017;2019;2020. I find it hilarious that Blue baggers and Tiger fans can actually moralize on this webpage. Have they forgotten the 1910 Grand Final brawl which they kick started? Then, there was the Round 4, 1969 incident when Vin Waite flattened John Greening and Len Thompson after he kicked the ball because they were getting roasted at Princess Park. Then, there was the Syd Jackson-Lee Adamson incident in the 1970 2nd Semi-final and the Keogh-Ohlsen incident in 1979 Grand Final. On each occasion they were the violent instigators and got off Scot-free. As for Richmond, Lawrie Fowler on John Nicholls, Neil Balme going awol in the goal square, Trent Cotchin and Tom Lynch letting their arms and elbows do the talking. Need I say any more? Let’s get the rules in order and be done with this fiasco called The Tribunal System.

'Wanted to hit, wanted to hurt': Brayden Maynard - the guilty man found innocent

There have been quite a few incidents between the Pies and Demons that have become etched in stone. 1955 Grand Final-Collingwood’s winger Des Healy had his career ended by Frank Bluey Adams; Norm Smith brought him on to quell Collingwood’s best player to prevent a late surge. Healey’s nose was broken in five places and his skull fractured. He never played League football again.

Read my comment above regarding your Blue Baggers. Enough said!

Maynard FREED: Pie cleared of rough conduct charge after marathon Tribunal hearing

Is there any mention of injustice above? You have misread what I have written. I don’t want any Collingwood players getting reported nor suspended during finals. Furthermore, I do not want to be on the receiving end of poor justice/umpiring such as the following incidents: –
a) Syd Jackson´s strike on Lee Adamson in the 1970 2nd Semi-final. Acquitted on the grounds of racial abuse at the instigation of George Harris. Cost us a flag!;
b) Shane Keogh´s strike on Russell Ohlsen, who was best on ground till then, in the 2nd quarter of the 1979 Grand Final which cost us a flag. The aforementioned received a severe reprimand at the tribunal. Cost us another flag!;
c) Alan Atkinson flattened by Leigh Matthews in the 1974 1st Semi-Final with a broken jaw and a few displaced teeth. No report-the latter played in Hawthorn’s losing Preliminary Final team.
Now, you may understand why there’s bad blood between the Blues and the Pies.By the way, I knew that Cripps would get off even before the hearing even took place.
Last, but not least, can you explain the reprieves given to Dangerfield, Cotchin and Lynch? I think the whole system needs a revamp and a better set of rules laid down. That’s my take!

Didn’t Patrick Dangerfield get a reprieve? Didn’t Trent Cochin get a reprieve? Didn’t Patrick Cripps get a reprieve? Didn’t Tom Lynch get a reprieve? The area of tribunal interpretation has been blurred for some time, hence there needs to be a more clarity in the AFL rules for the health and safety of all and sundry. I genuinely wish Brayshaw a speedy recovery and just hope that we can all move on with a set of rules that would allow for equity and player welfare. I don’t condone of any kind of physical violence either on or off the field;however there have been incidents that have cost us flags such as Keogh’s elbow to Russell Ohlsen’s head in the 1979 Grand Final. He was on his way to winning a Norm Smith medal prior to the second quarter incident. Keogh was given a severe reprimand for a blatant elbow to the face! Then, there was the Syd Jackson incident when he blatantly struck Lee Adamson in the 1970 2nd Semi-Final. George Harris convinced him to play the racist card and he was duly acquitted. The two incidents cost Collingwood two flags which older Blue Baggers are very cognizant of. Oh, I forgot Leigh Matthews’ flattening of Alan Atkinson in the 1975 First Semi-Final. We have copped loads and given a fair bit in return. What we all want is a clear set of rules, and consistency.

As a staunch Collingwood fan, I would like to see an end to Collingwood players fronting the tribunal during finals. We’ve had a long history of this kind of thing, and I’d like it to stop. Gordon Coventry in 1936; Phil Carmen in 1977; Cameron Cloke in 2002; Anthony Rocca in 2003. It would unfair if he gets rubbed out bearing in mind a number of recent decisions that have gone the way of other high-profile players. Consistency is what all footy fans crave for.

Maynard FREED: Pie cleared of rough conduct charge after marathon Tribunal hearing

Congratulations to the lads for getting the job done. I don’t know what will happen with Maynard, but one thing is for certain and that is that all the team need to lift and get ready for the Preliminary Final. The team need more inside 50s and more goals. Could Noble and Nick Daicos provide more forward thrusts and scoring opportunities? Sixty points do not suffice to win Preliminary Finals nor Grand Finals. A win’s a win, but we need to focus on the bigger picture. Who will prevail tomorrow night? The Bluebaggers or the Swans? The winner might just make it to the Preliminary Final and the Grand Final. Everything is at stake and both sides know it.

Finals Fix: Manic Magpies expose Dees' massive flaw - but here's why they should have to win it all without Maynard

The flag appears to be headed to a Melbourne club and the most likely destinations seem to be arguably two of the most traditional of all organizations that have a lifelong mutual respect and hatred for one another. Could you guess which two we are speaking of? Their names start with C and their respective post codes are 3053 and 3066. Moreover, their original home grounds are about a mile apart or a ten-minute drive on a reasonable day. Now the plot thickens if another traditional foe of both these suitors, whose club name starts with an E, just happens to play their part and makes the finals, thus meeting up with the club situated not far from Melbourne University. This is all contingent on the last remaining most traditional of foe of all the aforementioned whose home ground is where the finals are played in September plays its part. M. had better win one its last two games to ensure that C meets E to make this one of the most enthralling final series ever!
